What do you do when you're ready to thin your collection?
Comments (3)I do give away the common whites/yellows or the varieties that have been given to me, but I have other varieties (Gulf Stream, Hilo Beauty, Moragne #23, Vera Cruz Rose, Cancun Pink, Pu'u Kahea, Brea (not well known, from Jack Morgan), Kamiyama Rainbow, Plastic Pink, Nebel's Rainbow and on and on and on....) that I paid for as cuttings from mostly reputable and a few shady places. I run up quite the bill every spring with new plants and all the fertilizers that the plants need...DH hasn't said anything yet, but if our roles were reversed I would put the kibosh to the plumeria habit if I saw the bills coming in and stuff going out for free! Fortunately I sold a few bigger trees and that gave me the go ahead to bring in some more cuttings. :-) chuy, email me and let me know what you're looking for, I'm in North OC....See MoreDo you cull your fused/fasciated 'mega blooms'?
Comments (5)Yes. Unless you are just curious to see what monster results and don't mind the lost production, remove them. Many of them are terminal clusters and if not removed can stunt the plant growth and production. An analogy that is sometimes used to explain the effect they can have on the plant is the one about the giant baseball bat sized zucchini or cucumber hidden deep with in the plant somewhere and overlooked when picking. It causes the production on the rest of the plant to slow/shut down. How accurate that comparison is is debatable but you get the idea. :) Dave...See MoreThe culling of the bookshelves...
Comments (28)Siobhan, I am firmly of the opinion that one should own all the books one loves if at all possible, and own them in print form, and preferably in hardcover, ideally clothbound with acid-free paper. Of course I dearly love several hundred books. But many books I have read, even read with pleasure, I know I will not want to read again. Those are the ones I pass along to others. I agree with you about formats becoming obsolete. Even though I am anxiously awaiting delivery of my new Kindle, I will still be buying and archiving print books. I could lose my Kindle, or it could be damaged or stolen, or perhaps ten or twenty years from now the format will change, and all the books I have stored on it will no longer be available to me. Electronic formats are unsurpassed for distribution, but not very good at all for preservation. As for videotapes, I re-watch favorite movies, and so have re-purchased my very favorites in DVD. I don't want to do that again in BluRay, or what ever comes next after BluRay, or whatever comes next after that. Rosefolly...See MoreFreezing temps have culled my jade collection
Comments (24)Update....Yesterday it was clear there was more damage than I initially thought to the two big ovatas that started my Jade interest in the 1990s. The better light showed their leaf colour was very different, branches hadn’t drooped, but the leaves were now olive green in colour, very soft and translucent. Snapping one leaf in two revealed they were just bags of burst cells and fluid. Losses so far seem to be 2x C Compact, 1x Red Horn, 1x medium ovata, 1x tricolour, 1x Gollum, 2x Hobbit, 2x Hummel’s Ghost, 1x Solana, plus damage all over to one old/largest ovata and partial damage to it’s twin. All but the partially damaged ovata have been cut right back to bare stems and trunks to see if they can resprout. To be honest though, I’m expecting more cutting back over the next few days or weeks as stems receed even further. I have only myself to blame for not taking better heed of the advance weather warnings that were in place for the ‘Beast from the East’ as this bad weather episode was named. Lesson learnt the hard way! No worries, at least my family were eventually all back safely in their homes from being in the wrong part of the country at the time when the extreme conditions hit due to various reasons. They managed to work from home in some cases as schools were closed. Gill...See Moreporkpal zone 9 Tx
