I knew how big the Ladies got but I get your point. A lady banks alone on a trellis that small is risky bussiness. I'll have to build a huge trellis for both (someday it will happen).

And wisteria are known to be house eaters too! Unless you plan on doing major pruning to keep them both in check (and I don't know anything about what pruning is required for Lady Banks, some roses resent pruning) that trellis will never hold the both of them. I imagine for the first few years they'd be OK and, I'm sure they'd be gorgeous together (my vote is for the purple wisteria and the yellow Lady Banks), but after that it may just be too much for that one pole. And I wouldn't even think of adding another pink rose too. It would have to be on something atomic to compete with those two!

I shudder even to contemplate the largest wisteria in the world.

Plant those two together, but plant them FAR away from your dwelling place. Otherwise, enjoy the plants while they're young, then sell the property before it becomes obvious that they're consuming it.

Here at home, we planted both White Lady Banks (R. banksia banksia) and Yellow Lady Banks (R. banksia lutea) next to a block and board fence.

They ran 7 feet or so up the fence, leaped to the trees on the other side, and grabbed hold, and started to climb.

They now bloom several feet above the tops of the 30-ft-tall trees. Canes swag down through the trees, and clusters of yellow and white bloom in the half-light under them, like little clusters of light.

In many places in our area, the banksiaes are confined by rigid pruning, but they don't bloom much . . .

The HOA "gardeners" where my sister lives in Santa Clarita machete the Banksiae to keep them as shrubs. The remove tons of growth each year and the plants pave' themselves with flowers each spring. The hills almost appear to have snow (both white and yellow) on them from the plants flowering. I've also seen it kept trimmed very tightly to a house wall in Pacific Palisades where it requires constant attention to maintain, but it also pave's itself with flowers for a long season in that coastal climate. It can work, but it isn't a natural look and demands constant attention or it will get away from you...QUICKLY! Kim

same with wisteria although you can, with eternal pruning, shaping and supporting, grow wisteria as a self-supporting standard. At least you are considering the Japanese wisteria which is less house-eating than the chinese types. Together.....I think not, even with a chainsaw.

The Japanese type will also reflower over the summer, at least in the Santa Clarita Valley, here in Southern California. The trick a friend uses is to only buy one gallon Japanese types which either have buds/flowers later in the summer or which show recently faded ones at the time of purchase. She allows the nursery to do the selection for her by growing them until they express the propensity for flowering later. There are six (IIRC) in her garden currently, and there were flowers on them all the middle of this week when I took her roses from my garden and received her plate of home grown, organic heirloom tomatoes. Chinese types may have larger, more dramatic flowers, but the Japanese, at least in her conditions, are more willing to give more flowers over the summer. Kim

That's why the only wisteria here is in front where it has grown for over forty years and is controled by hardscape and too dry soil. No way am I going to turn it loose where there is room for it to spread! I've seen the World's Largest Wisteria in Sierra Madre and I know what a bear they are to maintain where they must be. But, I do love them in YOUR garden! Kim

Wisteria...the bane of my garden. I've been trying to kill it off for 3 years now and it keeps coming back and sending out runners everywhere. It's virtually unkillable once planted.

yah - great ropes of twisty stem and thousands of unreachable lianas (unreachable because they have eaten two trees - a massive cherry and a black pine), attacked the neighbours apple tree, coming to rest in a huge thicket of overgrown and suckering lilacs and forsythia. Neeeyarrgh - this horrendous mess belongs to one of my customers....slash and burn, slash and burn.

Restaurant Chez Panisse in Berkeley CA has these planted together on an arbor in their front/side yard. It doesn't seem out of control there but conditions might not be ideal---perhaps a bit shady. Their support structure is larger than what you show, though.

ah well isn't there that less vigorous, multiply blooming wisteria, blue moon? I bought two and am trying them out.

Lady Banks doesn't bloom well here in 9b. Are you far enough north that it does? It apparently likes more chill than we have.

Actually, I have seen a wisteria alba and a yellow Lady Banks grown side by side, and beautifully too, at Filoli Estate. Of course, they have over 100 people on staff and a big budget, so pruning is not a problem. But beautiful...

For those living in hotter climates where severe freezes aren't an issue, you might consider Purezza. It's a hybrid of Banksiae crossed with mini and resembles Banksiae very much. The flowers are larger, but look just like bigger versions of the original. Instead of being totally thornless, there are minor prickles on the leaf midribs. The plant is much smaller than the original, so is easier to keep "in bounds".

Where it gets HOT, this begins to flower as the heat builds and continues to flower as long as it is hot. Banksiae flowers before the heat hits and finishes once the heat builds and remains.

If you live in a coastal climate, Banksiae may flower much of the summer because the weather seems like spring for such a long time. Inland, where there is real heat, it flowers for a shorter period. Purezza may not recieve enough heat along the coast to flower. But, where you get long periods of heat in the nineties and higher, Purezza should flower as long as it remains HOT. I have grown it in the Santa Clarita Valley and here in the mountains south of the San Fernando Valley north of Los Angeles for years and it flowers spring through fall here. Kim

Expanding upon Kim's comments (because he gardens inland, and I garden coastal) we've found that R. banksia lutea is rarely OUT of bloom here, where temperatures are mostly moderate. As a tradeoff for seeing it bloom through most of the year, we don't see the massive explosion of spring bloom that appears following a "real" winter.

R. banksia banksia, OTOH, really doesn't repeat, other than a scattered bloom or three. So, to get THAT look through the year, we need Purezza.

Purezza, here, sat for easily 3 years, not blooming much in any season.
When it finally reached a volume IT felt to be sufficient, it started to bloom, and has rarely stopped. Again, we never see that huge explosion of spring bloom, BUT it blooms in noticeable volume almost all the time. It's blooming quite well now -- and we haven't yet had any summer heat for this year.

I should add that 'Fortuniana' will give us a reasonable amount of bloom right around the calendar.

all summer! Yep, we really are on different sides of the world. Here in Cambridge, a couple of brave people grow R.banksia lutea on large south-facing house walls on a busy road. Every spring, I pass these, stop and think hmmm. 3 weeks later, there is just a large amount of dull green leafage. I am thinking that this is a beautiful but demanding rose which needs very specific situations to do well in England. There are some terrific examples in large and famous gardens but they are generally much firther south, very sheltered with a much higher rate of rainfall and humidity than we would see in arid East Anglia.
Thankfully, the sheer size has always impressed itself on me- the thought of any of the banksian roses or any type of wisteria, in my tiny 4mx9m garden cuts through my wildest optimism. At my allotment, which is exposed and windy, I fear it wouldn't last a fortnight. Not to worry though, a lovely Goldfinch covers itself with dainty yellow flowers, just a few weeks later....I am always consoled.

And, there you are . . . One climate's failure is another's glory.
We're fortunate that there's such a wide spread of rose types and environmental conditions. It gives us the opportunity to see a little of everything, if we travel a bit.
