Sceptre d'Isle is never without a flower!
Comments (40)Thanks for those great picture, Niels. You are right on what you wrote, "fading to two-toned - almost white in hotter sunnier weather ...Flowers last about 2-3 days before they shatter - and petals fall." That's my problem with Scepter d'Isle in full sun at 80 to 100 degrees. We finally got down to 60 degrees in the morning, and Scepter looks pink instead of white. I will move my Scepter to partial shade - its bloom bleaches out to completely white and shatters in hot sun. Compare that to "Deep Purple" floribunda which retains its color and bloom lasts 10 days on the bush, and 5 days in the vase. Scepter d'Isle, like most Austins look magnificent in cool and wet weather below 70 degrees, but really faded out and scents go away in hot summer. I understand that your summer in Denmark is much cooler than my Chicagoland, right? The heat is here until after Labor Day, September 3, then I can say good-bye to fans, and look forward to better colors and better scents on Austins....See Moremerits of Nahema vs Scepter'd Isle
Comments (22)That's such great news Ken because I have one on Fort that got hit by some sort of weed killer that my lawn guy put down and it was stunted for an entire year. It is now shaking it off and finally starting to grow strong. I worry that I put it in a place that doesn't get enough sun, but its hard to tell since it had that problem with the weed killer. I'm leaving it alone for now because I fear a move right now would do it in. If it doesnt recover by the fall however, I will consider moving it to a better location. Right now I have 3 Austins in a sunnier spot that are performing admirably. Particularly Pat Austin that blooms its head off and has gotten to be about 7 feet tall....See MoreWhich rose? Comments (14)I agree with most of things written about Scepter'd Isle (above), so I'll just show you a picture of her when she is "looser." Scepter'd Isle I grew Mayflower for a number of years. It was a dependable bloomer (always the first of the season) and rebloomer, and it has one decided advantage over Scepter'd Isle--Mayflower has excellent bs resistance, whereas Scepter'd Isle is periodically susceptible to BS (but not a disease magnet). My problem with Mayflower is that while the bloom is pretty, it awakens no song in my heart--whereas the blooms of Scepter'd Isle do. Mayflower I don't remember problems with thorns on either of them. I've never grown the third rose you mention. Kate...See MoreScepter'd Isle, St. Cecilia, The Lady Gardener-
Comments (41)Lilyfinch, neither of my Spirit of Freedom plants want to climb. The 6 yr. old is own root, a little more than 4' tall, and vase shaped. The 1 yr. old, is grafted, and much bushier than the older one. I've seen pictures of SofF climbing, so it may in your climate, especially if it's trained onto a structure. It is always healthy, maybe because it's so dry here. I know you will love it regardless of the form it takes....See Morelenie
