Is This a Self-seeded Rose?

I have been staring at this little plant for a couple of weeks now, and have decided that I need an expert opinion! I found this little seedling in my front shade garden, between some hostas, under a Maple tree. The only rose close by is my Julia Child, up on the front balcony, where there's more sun. Whatever it is, it must be a real little fighter, since very few plants will grow under that Maple. Can someone take a look please?

It's not a rose. My first guess is a species of sumac (very, very, VERY unlikely to be poison sumac, which requires a wet environment and so is confined to swamps, marshes, and the edges of ponds, lakes and streams or rivers), my second guess is a species of ash (tree). If so the genus is either "Rhus" (1st guess) or "Fraxinus" (2nd).

I'll bet it's a walnut seedling. Do you have black walnut trees around? When they're young, the leaf structure looks an awful lot like a rose. One just like this fooled me earlier this year when it sprouted in my front border.

Hi Karen, I have some pink poppies that I can trade and some no ID pink Cleome and Cleome "Rose Queen" which is rosey pink - both of which are self-seeding. I think I might have some others too, but I can check. I'll send you an email. Sue

"Do all the flowers on the plant do that? Quite interesting" Well, there's just the one flower this year. We only discovered it after clearing away a lot of weeds, mostly ivy & periwinkle. It's not much more than a foot high. Now I'd like to encourage it - yes, it would be interesting to see if any more flowers do the same. I suppose it should survive the rest of the summer and the winter without the weed blanket, or is there something I should do to help it? (I've got some anti-rust stuff I spray on every couple of weeks.) Thanks again,

You might try searching the website of High Country Roses in Denver. They have some interesting found roses. 'Alba Medilland' is a hardy, repeat blooming rambler, or that is how I think of it. The canes are very flexible and could be wound along a fence. I found out the hard way it does not like to be pruned. My alba/Damask hybrid 'Belle Amour' is growing nicely in partial shade without disease. 'Duchesse de Rohan' grows the size you want but I don't know if it will tolerate any shade. 'Yolande de Aragon' grows to about 5'. The foliage is a pretty soft green; the blooms are large, flat, very double and exceptionally fragrant. Again, I don't know how much shade it will take.

I'm with Connie. I dig BW seedlings out year round. Squirrels plant them. Black Walnut trees prohibit the growth of a lot of plants. Roses don't do real well close by. Mostly they are very messy trees! Lots of yard clean up to do.

I have to say, I'm a little disappointed! I was ready to pot it up and baby it and everything, just to see what the bloom would turn out like. Too bad.
I don't know if there are any Black Walnut trees nearby, since I don't even know what they look like. I'll have to check that out. Guess I had better dig up the little guy in case he causes problems with the plants around him.

I forgot all about black walnut! Yes, that's probably what it is (or possibly some other nut tree, but that one's probably the hardiest of the native nuts).

You can confirm that it is a BW tree. Just dig deep enough and the nut will still be attached.
