Temperature jumped 25 degrees!

We have been having a very cool summer - avg 10 degrees below normal, accd to the weather people. For about 2 months, it has been cool & foggy in the mornings, sun comes out at noon, and it heats up to maybe 75 in the afternoon. Actually, perfect weather. I have been able to be out in the garden, and the roses were loving it.

Well, yesterday it suddenly hit 99 degrees! I happened to be in SF yesterday, and it was 90 degrees there (the high temp there had been about 55 degrees for weeks)! It is supposed to be over 100 here today. My Niles Cochet, which is in a gigantic pot, and which I water daily, was covered with exquisite blooms of pale pink surrounded by raspberry outer petals. By yesterday afternoon they were all potpourri.

The only good news - 6 of my recalcitrant tomatoes, all of which were still green or orange at best, turned dark red in 24 hours, and I was able to pick them. Can't really complain though, as we are so dry that the nights still get cold - had all of the fans on last night, and we were cosy under 2 blankets.

I know what you mean, Jackie. We had been having a mild and very gentle summer and then all of a sudden, it's 88 degrees. Not complaining though, we have pretty mild summers in my part of CA, compared to most of the country. I always expect an Indian summer for us though, because it is the norm here for summer heat waves to occur in late August into October. Stay cool and wear your garden hat. :)

It's supposed to be 108 in Simi today.
I'm going to visit friends who have air-conditioning.
Too bad I can't bring Bishop's Castle with me.

I find it interesting that Goldrush is Penn State's most advanced apple. For me, it is among the least active. Most of it is still in silver tip, with just a few half-inch greens. On the other end of the spectrum, Pricilla and Hudson's Golden Gem now have a good portion of tight clusters. Winecrisp and William's Pride are close behind. That PDF is very usefull- not just in terms of the temperature, but providing a concise summary of the bloom stages for each type of tree. Thanks to Harvestman for originally bringing it up and to Glenn for re-posting it. I don't think I lost much at all. All my stonefruit is new this year and is just starting to wake up. It hit a low of 26 around here and the only open flowers were on a pear tree. Even that was only because I've just planted it and it came from California, where it was a bit ahead of our schedule.

I can stand heat but unfortunately my plants can't, not even our present moderate temperatures in the low 80'ies (moderate compared to Texas). I water pots, vegetables and some perennials every evening. When I was young I experienced heat in the Sudan where 110F was the normal temperature in May. We had one day of record heat, 116 F, hot even for Khartoum which is on the Nile and generally cooler than the desert. I took part in a voluntary workcamp for two months, doing heavy manual work, digging, carrying mortar and tiles. But work started at 6 with a break between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. We stopped working at 7 p.m. I think the early pioneers in Texas and other hot places must have stopped working mid-day, too. Unfortunately that is not possible in the modern world. My favourite hot weather drink is Lemoon, a drink I learnt to like in Khartoum where it was sold in the market. It's simple, squeeze as many limes as you want and mix with syrup, made from sugar boiled with water. Add ice and dilute with cold water. Hot tea is also very good in heat. (Nobody believes this but it's true.)

Aindra's comments are insightful. re thermometers, any soil thermometer will work. The "Taylor Soil Testing Thermometer, 4" Stem, -20 to 180 Degrees F" on Amazon is an example. Because decomposition releases heat, active compost will always be warmer than the ambient temperature. How much warmer depends on what you put in recently. Dump in a quart of potato peels and it will get alarmingly hot; cardboard and coffee grounds, not so much. My experience with stackable bins is that the bin interior is generally about ten degrees fahrenheit above ambient temperature. Further, as Aindra points out, the bin has enough thermal mass that its interior temperature will be affected by the average ambient temperature, not by night-time dips. If the outdoor temperature stayed below freezing, day and night, for a week, I might think about bringing the worms inside. But a night-time dip to 40 is absolutely no problem, and getting a thermometer will reassure you of that.

I actually baked a cake yesterday -- and consistent with the reading on my thermometer (A taylor liquid thermometer tested and recommended by cook's illustrated) -- the cake came out perfectly in the time allotted with an additional 25 degrees. I did consider that my thermometer could be wrong, but my baking and roasting experiences over the course of the past two months suggests to me that's unfortunately not the case. Both the thermometer and the oven appear very responsive and accurate with the changes in temperature -- the oven just seemed off by exactly 25 degrees. But as long as there was a quick fix for adjusting the thermostat on the oven, I'm a happy camper!

I was planning to transplant a young rose I planted in the wrong spot. Changed my mind. It can wait until it cools back down.

I've moved and planted a lot of plants in the past month. I think I'll go do some more watering.

we have an "excessive heat warning" in our general area till wed at least. ;P lame. It's been so nice this summer. I wish it was this cool every summer (more like 80... instead of 110),... but it's going to be 105 today, and I've seen it 108 this past week, too. :(

... I still have some things to plant!

Did the watering. I was pruning and tying up the big rambler that might be Rambling Rector when I ran out of good cotton cord the other day. I hate to use jute so I decided to wait until I got more cord. Well I have it now but the rose can wait until it cools off a bit, or until I have a free early morning to work on it.

Meanwhile the tomatoes are happy. They love hot nights. I decided to make sauce and have spaghetti for supper tonight. This will be the first day we've had enough to make sauce. I think I'll go pick tomatoes and basil before it gets hotter yet.

Just the exact opposite here in Texas, 108 yesterday and 83 today. After 100+ almost every day this month, today has been a real blessing.

Here in "Live-no-more" (as the local kids call it - actually, Livermore, but rather apropos, considering our usual summer weather), it hit 103 today in my yard. The winners in heat-resistance thus far (2 days of blistering heat after an incredibly cool summer, but I watered well ahead of the predicted heat wave) are: Etoile de Lyon (hardly even a brown edge, anywhere!), Stanwell Perpetual, Madame Alfred Carriere, and Marechal Niel. Honorable mention (more than 50% of blooms still presentable): Alliance Franco-Russe, Souvenir de Pierre Notting, Bermuda Spice, and Mrs. B.R. Cant. The "potpourri" crew (I like that term!): Maman Cochet (relatively young, but really...), Le Vesuve (still young, and not THAT bad), Comtesse du Cayla, Duchesse de Brabant, Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux (a surprise considering his thick petals), Clementina Carbonieri, Gilbert Nabonnand, Madame Berkeley (well!), Madame Antoine Mari, Jaune Desprez, Alistair Stella Gray, Cramoisi Superieur (in a pot), and poor Crespuscule (who is one of my real favorites, but not a hot-weather rose here -- however, he does usually recover quickly).

I didn't know it was so hot in SF. We were 99 yesterday, the hottest day of this season. It's leaping back down this weekend. I've so enjoyed the mild weather. Many roses kept blooming and watering was a chore not a horrible chore.

Yeah, thankfully it'll be down to a ridiculously low (for this time of year) 77 this weekend here. :)

but today, it will be 105. EWWWWWWWWWWWW

My Madame Alfred Carriere not only is not wilting, but it's sending up canes. Actually... except for Mortimer Sackler, all my roses seem to be doing well in the short heat snap. Mortimer is "ok", but just doesn't look as smart as the others.
oh... my tiny Reine Des Violettes band which hasn't grown -at all- (still the same 3 leaves) since February is looking a bit sad. Otherwise, they're doing great.
