Moving roses

Too big, too small, the wrong color, etc. It needs to be moved!

IÂve read Spring or Fall are the best times. Wanting to read more about it I checked the indices of at least 20 rose books under the subject, "Moving Roses", Nothing. I did a Search on GW and it locked up.

Either option, Spring or Fall, seems likely to cause some shock. But I suppose that is to be expected. IÂve done it many times mainly in the fall and I always try to keep as much of the root ball intact but with not a lot of success. Even thinking before digging I imagine digging down beneath the roots, wrapping it somehow and then lifting it neatly. That is before the process begins. And it usually ends up being a mess.

So what is your advice? Tips? Schemes?
