How did the Cherokee Rose get to the U.S.?

I was wondering about the timing of this rose's arrival. It seems to have gotten established in Georgia very early, and Georgia was first settled by Europeans in the early 18th century, wasn't it? (A glance at Wikipedia tells me that the first formal British colony was established in 1732.) When did the rose come, and does anyone know who brought it? It's my understanding that R. laevigata/the Cherokee Rose comes from China, and the China roses began arriving in Great Britain in the course of the 18th century, with 'Old Blush' coming around the third quarter of the century and the others following. How about R. laevigata?
