Cherokee Rose

I have finally ID'd this white rose in my back yard. I think it's a white Cherokee rose. I HATE it. It's been there for the 20 years I've lived here, and it's has been trying to kill me ever since I can remember. 2 reasons I still have it. (1.) The former owner was married under it's arbor in 1925. (2.) I can't get it out. It has a 2' diameter crown. it has the worst thorns ever, and it gets in with my wisteria, making it very difficult to prune.

Does anyone have a good reason why I should not hate it? Does anyone have one and actually like it?

It has a wonderful history -- WONDERFUL.
And it is disease-free.

Any rose in the wrong place can be a pain in the neck. Mine is out on a fence where it can't get into trouble. Since it is green all year it can be a good screen.

I am a Native American and really would love to have about 25 to 50 of your Cherokee Rose seeds, also. My full blooded Native Grandma grew the Cherokee rose, but unluckily it was destroyed in a prairie brush fire and she never managed to find a replacement. I have quite an assortment of unique and colored heirloom tomato seeds I can send you in trade. I'ts way too late this spring for buds, WFIW. Cherokee has always had a lighter green leaf than any other roses I grow (even it's daughter, Fortuniana, has a darker leaf). The current hot spell may be a bit stressful for the current leaves to correct themselves. Can you work on drainage and organic matter in the soil? The biggest Cherokees that I've seen grow in very sandy soils with just bits of organics. Mine lives in clay, but it's on a knoll with as decent drainage as it can get, given it's clay.

That's a good point Diane! I wonder how I could keep it in check if I put it on the unfenced back property line. There is tons of space back there but I would want to keep it on our side. The property behind us is an old cable trail (more wooded property between other people's acreages) that the city is supposed to maintain but doesn't lol. I am also considering the Mermaid rose. I read that it flowers more often so I might just go with that one if it could survive on its on roots here in nematode FL. Part of our property is wooded so lots of smaller and huge trees to climb and part is very sunny with smaller shrubs etc. The soil back there is fabulous -years of decomposed leaf litter, pine needles, etc. We get plenty of rain. Wild honeysuckle, trumpet vine, carolina jessamine, blackberries, and wild grapes grow all over our property without any extra water or care.

I did see you mentioned above that you had a young FDY. Yes, I think there are at least two plants, but I agree that it's impressive, anyway... We have R. laevigata growing into our yard from a neighbor's yard. It is vigorous, and impressive when it blooms, but it does tend to grow up only so far before it wants to flop over and grow downwards. That might be the perfect growth pattern for what you have in mind, but possibly not. Paul -- You know it is the Georgia State Flower?
They did that because they thought it was a Native Plant -- but of course, it turned out that it was not.
The latest theory I've heard is that it likely was carried to the Savannah area in the 18th-Century, in bags of seed rice.

(That is, of course, unless you want to consider the theory that it could have been carried to North America in the 15th-Century Chinese Treasure Ships.)

The Cherokee Indians are said to have planted the rose in their towns, and to have carried it to Oklahoma when they walked "The Trail of Tears." And I LOVE the suggestion that it may have been the inspiration for barbed wire.

All those things are fun. But probably not helpful if you have to fight your way through it to get to the barbecue grill.
