I couldn't let this thread end; I'm not sure I ever want it to end. Every day there are more wonderful pictures of lovely rose people and the persons, animals and gardens they cherish.

I must admit, with the exception of those whom I'm already familiar with and Kim and odinthor, no one has looked as I expected them to. I can say, though, that everyone is delightful, with honesty and humor in their eyes.

Be still my heart - odinthor, are you Brent Dickerson????? If so, I hope the training of the mice and appropriate jewelry for them has overcome its various hurdles.....

Yes, I was elated to meet Joe (aka Labrea) a few weeks back. He's got quite a special garden going on in the middle of downtown Manhattan.

Joe, I'll have to make another appointment to see it sometime. I'll be working again in NYC pretty soon. And I owe you a rose, so let me know if you like anything on My Page.

I like this kind of thread, and I've often thought about asking similar questions in this forum. My entire gardening life exists as a monument to family sentiment. My father's parents kept a large garden, right at the edge of the ocean, where they grew all kinds of things that conventional "wisdom" defines as being "unsuitable" for coastal conditions. If that sounds romantic, it wasn't. It was purely practical. They had both grown up during the depression, both the children of Northern European immigrants- they were frugal, to say the least. I don't keep a vegetable garden, but I can't eat a pea or a raspberry without thinking of my grandparents, and how much time they put into that garden all year long. They never looked at it as being a burden, or nuisance, or chore, the way so many people today seem to do (I just dont have the TIME-it's too much WORK). When I'm with my cousins, we ALL share very fond memories of time spent in that garden. But their flower garden is what I've tried to reproduce in my own life. They grew a great deal of flowers, the kinds of things you'd expect people of that generation to have had in their garden, and they ALL have sentimental value to me. I can never smell honeysuckle without thinking of the back porch, where we'd change out of our filthy clothes before being allowed to sit at the table for dinner. Or the sweet spicy smell of pinks, which grew along the river-rock steps to the front door. The sweet peas and Nasturtiums, which Papa grew as a curtain of curly tendrils climbing up the sides of the front porch. The yellow dahlias which I chose for Grammy at the garden booth of the County Fair when I was 5- which she ALWAYS referred to as "Zachy Dahlias". She kept those dahlias, or identical replacements, in that garden for the rest of her life. And of course they had a rose garden, where they grew 'Peace' and 'Tropicana' and 'Queen Elizabeth' (grown against an east-facing wall, to keep them out of the wind). I have all of these plants in my garden, (even 'Tropicana' whose color I LOATHE, but my mother gave it to me, because she remembered), none of them coming to me directly from their garden though. It's still there, even though they both died long ago. The family won't sell the land, but they also won't maintain it, so it's in a sorry state, and I'm the only one left in the area. I tried for years to keep it clean, but I decided instead to re-create that garden on my own land. And that's what I've spent the last 6 years trying to do. Every one of the plants I grow feels like an heirloom. I'm probably TOO sentimental, but like my Grandparents, I'm also practical. I'd rather grow roses in the present than sit around and cry for things that are gone.

Heat Pump running continually vs. using the back up heat

A test like that is not accurate unless the parameters are tightly controlled and all contributing factors noted. The meter reading includes all household electric use, not just the heat pump. Cooking? Bathing? Dishwashing? Laundry? Sunshine vs. overcast? Wet vs. dry weather (affects heat pump defrost frequency)? Did the 3Â°F recovery involve use of auxiliary heat strips? 2Â°F and 3Â°F setback is very minimal. More savings is potentially garnered with larger setbacks. I'm in TX. We had a rare snowfall during a wet norther on Dec 4. After that Dec 4 weather incident, I didn't run the central heating (heat pump) for several weeks. Instead, I used a space heater only in the bedroom at night. I noted that even with occasional nighttime temps into the upper 30Â°Fs, the unheated rooms in my house rarely dropped below 60Â°F. So ... if I had been running the heat pump at 70Â°F normal with a 2Â°F setback (68Â°F), it still would run to maintain 68Â°F during the setback periods ... but an 8Â°F to 10Â°F setback (setpoint of 62Â°F or 60Â°F), it would run very little during the setback periods, if at all. That'd make a difference on KWH usage in regards to setback vs. none.

Very pretty lamps. The runner helps break the dark of the cabinet and the dark of the lamps - well done. I see that mammie suggested moving out the lamps a bit, I was thinking the same - line them up with the medallions on the cabinet doors below. If I may, I think you need to elevate the items in the bowl a bit. Try wadding up some pieces of foil to take up space in the bowl, or putting a smaller bowl upside down in the bottom of the display bowl. Then a little moss or a pretty fall napkin to hide the mechanics, and then put back your fall items. They will fill the bowl better, and have more presence rather than sinking down into the bowl.

We had a fairly wide space in front of our toilet which is a good thing. When I broke my ankle, I was able to turn a wheelchair around in front so it made it much easier for me. We have a built in on the left side of the toilet with sliding doors on front and added an outlet above it. We use the outlet to plug in a night light, use the shelf for tissues and store t paper behind the sliding doors. On the right side, which is the shower wall, we added a heated towel bar which is wonderful...post shower, my towels are nice and toasty and it acts like a radiator for the toilet area.

This was a great idea Ingrid! We represent a pretty diverse demographic, don't we? It's lovely to see everyone's faces, and bonus points to the brave souls who showed off their fancy gardening costumes! I'll play, though I haven't been gardening long enough to actually have pics of me IN the garden (thank goodness). This one is my 9 month old son Rex and I on vacation for the 4th. (Horrendous rain while I was gone; garden looked sad on my return but things are perking up again). Don't let my pic break your monitors!

Hi kids, I just got back from my first road trip across the US for the Gettysburg 150th anniv. and I missed out on all the fun. Here's mine from a few weeks ago on a hike to a waterfall in Shenandoah Natnl. Park. Sweated all my makeup off and just sat down to rest when my lovey took this. Nice to see all of you when I got back.

I am enjoying all of your pictures. I mostly read and look at all of your pretty rose pictures and given advice, but I am glad to put a face with your names. Melanie: Your pic with your adorable son, Rex, melted my heart. My first "baby" is a teenager and my second "baby" is almost a tween. Oh my...time flies by.

I have a pic of my rose bro, paparoseman and me somewhere on an external hard drive. I will need to find it. I don't have a selfie pic yet. But how about an enticing pic of my favorite rose, Lynnie, to represent me today?

I notoriously never take photos of myself, but since I am all but wearing our foster (abandoned by her feral mother) kitten, I've snuck into a few.

Still very mad at myself for being so tired after getting used to nighttime feedings again and not sending in one of those first Vintage orders on Sunday...but...well...as I've already said, priorities!

Only issue is that it's going to make it VERY hard to remove the NOID OGR that she was born behind. I was about to commit to do it next year but...now I'm sentimental...

me too, Ingrid.....although annoyingly, Reuben still gets mistaken for my 'son' (cos he is skinny, with his own non-grey hair (not too dissimilar to your chap, Ingrid) - unlike me). I would gnash my teeth if I still had 'em (must be a clue there) although my dog hairdresser did ask if I was a cougar!!
Suspect the fact that the dog has a hairdresser while I cut (hack) my own hair might also have something to do with the general assumption of old bat syndrome.

Well, Cecil doesn't get mistaken for my son since he has a lot of lines (misspent youth in the oil fields sans moisturizer and sun block), but I felt he resembled Reuben in that they're both thin, with un-gray hair (although I found his first one the other day) and pierced ear. For some reason I go for aging- rocker types with long hair, scraggly beard and no hips. They just have to be tireless diggers in the garden.....

Florence, that mosquito get-up is FABULOUS. Given all the rain we are having here, I probably should invest in something like that. My DH threw a tantrum tonight and said he "simply could not take it anymore and was going inside"... well, I kept on at it despite the bug bites because there were roses that needed dead-heading and dahlias to stake and weeds to pull. It is a full time job to stay on top everything this year but things are lush and healthy so I can't complain.

Grace & all the others with children-wonderful to nurture little gardeners. That is my goal and dream.

Ratdogheads- what a lovely tribute. I caught the gardening bug from my grandfather. I remember seed trays and grow lights everywhere inside his house as a child. I hope he's proud of how I've carried on.

Edited to add a lovely shot of one of my carefree beauty roses fading after her first flush. (White pet, I think, in front.) Not nearly as grand as the one Florence has but not a bad show for her second season.

I raised a little feral kitten with a botttle. It's hard work but I loved that kitty so much that I didn't mind at all. I slept on the floor with him and he was right there with me all the time. He loved to go everywhere with us in the car and was so smart. He thought he was another person except better because he could climb and jump.

Anika, my fingers are crossed for her, too. What a sweetheart... my feral pair were older when I kit-napped them (ca 4 weeks and a few days), so I weaned them and didn't have to bottle-feed, but they are still, like Kittymoonbeam's kitty, much more social and human-tuned than any other of the numerous cats I have had. I was writing my master's thesis at the time I grabbed them and they sat in my lap for days on end as I sat in front of the computer. Luigi, in fact, was so smart that he "edited" my paper for me if I turned my head for even a second (I learned the value of the "save" function in those days). :-)

There will always be more great, rare roses down the road than any one of us can raise.

I Love liitle ferral kitties---my daughter rescued a litter and they all turned out to be wonderful cats

Belle you are right---the rose behind me is Carefree Beauty----I have three and it is a great rose--the first one I bought at the Antique Rose Emporium in Texas when I was visiting my sister and it was called "Katy Road Pink" (a found rose) ------after posting pictures on GW I received a nice note form G.Bucks daughter telling me it was her father's rose Carefree Beauty

Between the heat ---the skeeters and my age I pretty much stay in the AC----

I hope the rose in front of Carefree Beauty is White Pet, since I have one and that picture shows it to be very beautiful. I have some slight doubt, though, because on other pictures I've seen White Pet looks somewhat different. Carefree Beauty as always looks wonderful. I wish I had tried it long ago.

I loved the comments about the feral kitties; if taken young enough they seem to very much imprint on their human "mommies".

Little Nanite kitten passed away in the wee hours on Sunday while nestled warm and cozy in my husband's pocket.

She was just too small and her body couldn't keep up with her spirit.

I drove the entire city to find just the right statuary for the garden and I found it...and now she's buried in the exact spot where she was born and found. Full circle.

Such a sad story---but what a wonderful thing that she went to sleep cozy and warm and loved in your hubby's pocket----I love the statuary -- it is perfect for the kitty.

Anika, what you wrote brought tears to my eyes. Your little baby's life was all too short but from the moment she was in your hands her life changed and became everything good. You gave her that, and a beautiful memorial to her little spirit.

We have three male feral cats that come on our property out in the country and my heart goes out to them. Twice they have left the entrails of rabbits on the front door mat which is a mystery since they won't let us come near. I won't feed them but do leave leftovers at night far from the house, which are always gone by morning, and have fresh water in different places for any animal that needs it. These cats' lives are short and cruel, and I despise the people who do this to them.

Anika, How sad, but bless you for trying and giving that kitten a loved life, however brief, and peaceful death and remembrance.

I do think, Ingrid, that if people were to personally witness the horrible diseases and agonizing deaths most feral cats suffer, it might go a long way toward motivating spaying/neutering of pets. I have observed the deaths of more than a dozen here in ten years. It is virtually impossible to catch them for treatment or humane euthanization even within a few hours of death, their fear of humans being so strong; I have only managed to do so for two, one of which was a kitten about the age of yours, Anika, who eventually died of the distemper that killed his feral mother.

I thought I should introduce myself. I'm Melody and new to rose gardening this year. I've been doing a lot of reading here and no posting and thought maybe I should join in! Since heirlooms annual half off sale last year (where a friend took me and I fell head over heels) I've collected around 30 roses! Here's an iPhone snap my husband took of me and my boys on Mother's Day. I'm really glad to have found this forum!

What a gorgeous picture----my DH is now 75 and we have a picture of him very similar to yours---it is a picture of his mother and two brothers---You have no idea how precious that picture is to us-----Your boys will cherish this picture forever--make a lot of copies !!You are a pretty lady and the boys are adorable.

Thank you everyone! I feel very welcome. Roses are the little bit of "me" time I squeeze in for myself. I try to leave the majority of the yard kid friendly, but when they are grown I'm sure I'll delve into it much more! Here are a few photos of my roses for belle_va
