Favorite (new -to -you) plant for 2013?

If you're taking stock of your garden for the year, as I am, what perennial new to your garden in 2013 is your favorite?
In my garden, hands down, the best is Caryopteris divaricata 'Snow Fairy' . Hate the frilly name but its variegated leaves make a wonderful bright foil for every color around them. My roses and blue sages have never looked so good.
I bought this plant from Bluestone.

strobilanthes wallichii/atropurpurea

a birthday trip (22.10) to my local botanics and there they were, a fabulous late perennial, previously only known to me as a house plant (and not very nice one at that - Persian Shield, aka Strobilanthes dyeriana).

Liberated a seedhead (although ordered more because I am so crazy for them).

I tend not to develop favorites with first year plants; they are just not at their best yet and I am never sure if they will survive the winter. From plants I put in last summer (2012), I really like Helenium 'Mardi Gras' and Penstemon 'Sweet Joanne'.

I also would expect an immune response (from very weak to complete immunity) to rose rosette virus which would vary in effectiveness depending on which variety, possibly temperature, possibly general health of the plant, possibly time in growing season, and other still unknown factors. We do know of three examples of unexpected behavior. One is that graft transfers of the virus in multiflora are not successful after a certain date. A second is for one species of rose the virus can go down one cane but does not go up other canes. A third is that 20% or in some cases more of infected roses appear to cure themselve (go into remission) but then the disease returns (have a relapse). "Q: Is the virus present in non-symptomatic tissue [on plants known to have been symptomatic]? It can be. We have seen about 20 percent of newly symptomatic roses, lose all trace of symptoms. However, the symptoms always return and usually cover most of the plant. The 2012 review article for which I have included the quote below may be of interest. "Plants, however, lack specialized mobile immune cells. Instead, every plant cell is thought to be capable of launching an effective immune response. So how do plants achieve specific, self-tolerant immunity and establish immune memory? Recent developments point towards a multilayered plant innate immune system comprised of self-surveillance, systemic signalling and chromosomal changes that together establish effective immunity." My faves change, usually they're strong on whatever's blooming at the time! I do love roses & irises, & now that I've seen a beautiful bed consisting entirely of daylilies, I'm a "daylily fan" as well!

Sombrero and Cheyenne Spirit Coneflower. AWESOME plants. Dense structure, dense green, vigorous heavy flowering with intensely colored persistent flowers. In fact they still have flowers on them today.

Mysteryrose, I also planted 'Snow Fairy' this year and very much enjoyed it. Like Nhbabs, the jury will be out for me until I see how it does over the next couple of years, but thus far, it's a winner. I like how the flowers are quite different than other caryopteris.

Also came upon Agastache 'Blue Boa' this year. The flowers were so huge and rich in color it almost looked like butterfly bush flowers. I'm hoping it really is a Z5 plant.

I enjoyed Moonflower annual vine tremendously - believe it or not, have never grown it before, but definitely will be next year. I also picked up two dwarf Colorado blue spruce on super-duper clearance that I am thrilled with so far.

Other than that, it's been a quiet year over here in terms of new plants. I did pick up a few other new-to-me plants, but as mentioned above - too early to make any sort of judgement.

I planted 4 o'clocks for the first time this summer. wow, didn't know they grew that big. Wonderful trait that they bloom late in the afternoon and into the evening. Some of the flowers almost had a irridescent look to them. beautiful!

Also, FINALLY had some double poppies bloom. first time for that too. I LOVE them!

I bought in spring 2012 a Caryopteris Little Miss Sunshine, and it did winter over just fine and really looked nice this year until Storm Atlas flattened it out. Very nice color for fall. It starts out very yellow in the spring, but gets a bit greener as the year wears on. The blue flowers are very nice.

That Little Miss Sunshine is beautiful! May be the very thing to sit next to my Sand Cherry come next spring... :)
