Japanese Anemone

Hello,

would Japanese Anemone do better in sun, shade, combination of both? I am in zone 8.

In zone 8 I'd give it more shade.

Re a Japanese anemone: a personal story: I garden in Aurora, Ontario and have very largely avoided Japanese anemones, actually because I found the one below to be such a spreader (picture October 1, 2009). I planted the mixed perennial garden of the picture in 2000 and have been maintaining it ever since. That Japanese anemone is the only herbaceous perennial that was present when I converted that garden to a mixed herbaceous perennial garden. I've been chopping out runners from the anemone, spreading into several low evergreens around it, ever since. Personally, I've found corralling that Japanese anemone far more challenging than controlling or eliminating several other perennial runners going into evergreen shrubs. However, that Japanese anemone is too useful to eliminate (for its bloom and especially for its bloom time). Over the years, I've only planted one other Japanese anemone (a named cultivar) and that in our own small garden. It only lasted two years, leaving me to wonder whether I'd just dodged a future plant maintenance bullet.

Well everything plants well here in the fall (pretty much)...only issue is if they decide to grow vs going dormant (last year) and then get a sudden freeze. Also, I planted one 'Queen Charlotte' last spring from mail-order (quite small), and it grew and bloomed last summer with a few stalks...now, I have a huge clump spreading into other things. I'm certain I could divide after foliage dies down (or next spring) and provide a plant for everyone on the block. Despite wet weather till very late summer, it was a fretful plant for this far toward to the SW, and requires frequent watering during dry spells or it looks hideous and wilts terribly. Still, it's very cheery as we head into fall....just requires more attention than I'd like due to our dryness and drying potential in the dry breeze. Of course, I'm not being very nice to it, requiring it to have full sun...so part of that is my fault in siting.

I have mine on facing north with a fence on the south and they are very happy. They get sun in the morning. I have Robustissma (pink) and Honorine Jobert (white). They are huge and lovely, but R. is very invasive. I had to move them from a flowerbox because they took it over. They just light up that shady fenceline.

I'm with you, Natalie. I LOVE anemones - what a great fall plant. I have them planted in both sun and part-sun. I don't know how hot your summers get, but we have very humid ones up here and had 17 days over 90 this year. If you want to plant them in full sun, transplant in spring or fall while it's cooler because I've found them to be fussy to get established. In more sun, they will need more moisture as this is a plant that likes that. It helps to also enrich the soil and cover with mulch so it retains even more moisture. Once established, they're very carefree and long flowering which is what I love about them. My Honorine Jobert started blooming in late August and is still going strong. The richer the soil, the more they will spread. Even though my patch that gets sun all afternoon gets watered more, they're still about half the size of my others, so I think some shade is beneficial.

I bought a September Charm just over a month ago - what a beautiful plant! Then I saw a Hadspen Abundance just last week, and I wished that I had got that instead! I love the darker color. In any case, they are all lovely.

I go through stages of plant addiction. These days it's Japanese Anemone :).
I planted a white one a month back (Honorine Jobert) in a sunny spot, and it needs to be moved to a shady one, I think, since it looks way too droopy, and the buds would not open up. However the pink ones, that were planted in rather shady locations, are just jumping with joy!
Do they re-seed? There is one I have planted last year having long stems. The flowers seem to be done blooming. Do I cut them down (stems that is), or wait for the seeds to form and do their thing? Architecturally it is rather attractive.

Up here in zone 5, Japanese anemones thrive in full sun as long as the soil has sufficient moisture, and they also perform beautifully in partial shade. They spread at a faster clip in full sun/moist soil, but spread nicely over time in part-shade, too.

Obviously, it's a different ballgame in zone 8, but I can at least tie in my experience to your zone and say if you don't have moist soil in the sunny location you're thinking of, don't even consider putting the anemones there - they'll fry in no time. Other than that, my guess would be partial shade would be better in your zone.

What about in boggy, partial sun (mostly shade) soil. How do you think they would grow here in zone 5?

The whole group of plants with the common name of Japanese Anemone is rather confusing to me. The majority of them are varieties of Anemone hupehnensis or Anemone x hybrida, the later being crosses made between the other species within this group. These include A vitifolia, A matsudae and A tormentosa in this group. Although given the moniker "Japanese", they probably originated from China.

I have a pink double variety, tagged as Anemone x hybrida 'Bowles Pink'. Now, I am beginning to wonder if it was mislabelled, and is really Anemone x hybrida 'Margarete' instead.

I have this one growing in different sun exposures. Too much shade produces a weak plant with sparse flowering - which is just nice as it limits it's growth and controls it's tendency to be invasive. The one in full sun tends to have shorter flower stalks. Overall growth appears less robust, but I have noticed that it spreads further and faster. I wonder if this may be partly due to the poorer soil and less consistent watering. It goes through near drought conditions at times, but survives and blooms well. The best clump in our garden receives full afternoon soon - this one has lush leaves, stay as a tight clump and is a heavy bloomer.

'Bowles Pink, or not.......?

Wow! The flowers on this picture are gorgeous! Love the shape and color of them. Mine look pink and single, not double. Would love to get some of these beauties.
