Yes, this year's stems will die back to the ground, but you may already see some tiny rosettes forming at the base. Those will be next year's stems.

I planted Sedum Autumn Joy, matrona, and purple emperor this Spring for the first time. Very hardy plants and so pretty!! The bees absolutely love them. They have attractive flower heads from start to finish. It's fascinating to watch the color change through the season.

Also, I was wondering why it didn't grow a lot but it was very healthy. Will it be taller next year? My friend's sedum is like 17 to 20 inches tall.

I think, my sedum's height right now is only 10 to 12 inches. I think the height when I planted it was 9 inches.

I am wondering why the leaves are yellowing, did you have a really early really hard frost? Here in Mn zn 3/4 mine are in their glory. The amount of sun they get determines the head/flower size. Mine planted in more shade also have thinner stalks.

I can't remember if my stems are yellowing - but the plant is going into dormancy, that's normal this time of year. We've had some pretty cold weather. You can leave it intact all winter - the heads turn brown and are interesting against the snow. Yes, they get larger each season. Don't worry about that. Mine is so huge it droops in the middle - looks like someone sat on it. That's a common complaint, so I'm overdue to divide it. If you want a more compact plant, you can prune it once the stems are about 12-15 inches tall and you'll get more, but smaller, flower heads. It's also extremely easy to propogate. Just cut off a stem and stick it in the ground (keeping it watered until it takes root). The bees love this plant.

Rule of thumb about perennials - the first year they sleep, the second year they creep, the third year they leap. Have patience. It will get bigger, maybe bigger than you want it to!

I pinch off the top of each stem in June, and that makes the plant a little shorter, sturdier, and it gets more flowers.

And, if yours is flattening out in the middle, it might need to be divided.

Sorry for the delay. Tons of things going on. Anyways, here is the pic taken November 3. I would like to have more sedums next year. How do I multiply them?

Looks like normal coloring after a frost. The leaves will drop but stems and flowers will dry out and remain standing during the winter. In the spring cut them back to the rosette. In the late spring/early summer cut or break off a stem and pop it in the ground. Water and soon you will have another plant. I have also taken cuttings when I prune mine (to keep plant shorter and compact) then put several in a pot of moist soil. Keep the pot watered until cuttings are rooted then seperate and plant. You can also divide a large plant to make two or three smaller ones.

I have such good luck with these. Just break off a couple stems and stick them in the ground. They root readily and now is a good time. I have given several to friends who have had success this way.

Use stems that still have a bit of green in them. They may look bad thru the Winter (do mulch around with leaves or such) but they will root in Spring. You can also scatter the seed heads!

You will need to wait until the plant grows new stems in the spring to propagate new plants. The dead stems will not root. While this plant can be divided, or propagated through cuttings, this plant cannot be grown from seed.

I still see some few greens but with browning already. I am worried that the top part when planted might not root forever. I'll just wait in spring then.

I love this plant but mine never looks like that by this time in the fall cause the deer love it! I have one that's old and large and every fall the deer eventually find it. Right now it's only stems with no leaves or flowers. Looks lovely before they find it tho!

Luckygal, I feel your pain! About the only things that the deer around here like better than the sedums, are tulips, and daylilies.
