Spring like day here in Maryland

Oh, what a delightful day it has been. Temperature about 58 in the afternoon sun. I planted portulaca seeds in my old bird bath, but since there are no drainage holes, they may not grow, plus I put Press&Seal over the top but couldn't get it pulled taut. Guess they will rot or not do anything. So just a lesson learned. I wonder if I should have just direct sowed them? Maybe soil is still too cold for them. So I wasted a few bucks probably.

Temp got up to 62 here in north central CT this afternoon but that wind was fierce and straight out of the North Pole. Kind of surprised me because I didn't see it mentioned on the weather report.
Despite the 62 degrees and warm sunshine, there are still NO SPROUTS in any of my containers.
Here, Green Wave. This way. Here, you come. Come on. You can do it. Come on now. This is where you want to be.
Sigh.

Isn't is great! And it's supposed to be even better tomorrow!

I don't have any sprouts yet, either, but it's too early anyway. I DO have a pansy that has actually come back and BLOOMED! And some grape hyacinths, which is nice :)

emptysgirl, The weather is always a gamble, like a lot of things, but it helps to know what your gambling odds are for your gardening decisions. It takes a little figuring out how to use the data, but this Freeze/Frost Occurrence Data for Illinois is quite detailed. First of all, find the town closest to you in the table. Then decide a temperature threshold of 36Â°F, 32Â°F, or 28Â°F. A really killing frost would be 28Â°F. Now, for example, for Albion Illinois the probability that a frost as low as 28Â°F would occur after March 16 is 90%. That means that if you set your tomatoes or whatever out on March 16 there would be a high probability of 90% that a killing frost would get them. The same goes pretty much for planted seeds. For Albion, if you set your tomatoes out on March 31, the probability of a 28Â°F frost after that date would be 50% and if you waited until April 14, the probability of a 28Â°F frost after that date would be only 10%. You might consider that date as "safe". If you are more willing to gamble, you might go for the 50% date of March 31. So, to use the table, pick a town and a threshold temperature and decide on how much of a gamble you are willing to take. If no town really close to you is listed, you could interpolate the data from two towns on either side of you. When the weather is involved, there is always some uncertainty, but the past weather data gives you a pretty good idea what your gambling odds are. Good morning everyone! Lucy that is a pretty dahlia..We picked up some tubers this weekend while we were out and about...I saw on the weather channel it was in the 80s in texas yesterday..Isnt that spring? That sounds right. :) I was in my 30's before I could name all the states of Australia and there aren't many. :) Before then, I knew New South Wales because I loved the double modifier and always wondered why North Wales was excluded, though I know there are cultural differences. :) I think I know all the provinces of Canada, but...okay, I just tried, but while I knew spaces I couldn't call to mind, I couldn't do it. Missed four. Blame sleep deprivation? But that's it for me. I know only a few of the states of Mexico and none of the Cantons of Switzerland, even though I've been there. Then again, the legend going around about the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta was that people called in to an advanced sales line from New Mexico to get tickets and were told that they only had tickets for people in the USA. I think pictures in media and air travel have made the map portion of geography instruction functionally obsolete (i.e., the people don't feel compelled to learn it).

I don't know much about portulacas, but I remember my mom used to grow them in her pebble garden in the really sunny spots. I think they need really good drainage though...

We have amazing spring-like weather here too in PA. No sprouts yet for me either in Zone 6, but we still have some snow on the ground, so keeping my fingers crossed!

I direct-sowed my peas yesterday, a little earlier than usual but I couldn't resist after hearing we should get a week of warm weather.

I wintersowed some annuals this past weekend, maybe I should move them out of the warm sun?

I also noticed many weeds flowering outside, they sure know how to wintersow, huh.

This weather is soooo welcome here. Maybe some of my flowers will finally sprout. All I've got so far is lettuce and broccoli. But I, too, still have snow on the ground, especially in my fenced early veggie garden where it drifted to about four feet (and is still a few feet along the back -- ugh) Might have to get out there with a shovel and break it up because we've been in the 50s for four days now and it doesn't seem to be melting,or not quickly anyway.
