Ants eating my bark?

OK, I did a quick search of the forums and the first hits indicated that ants don't typically destroy trees. But *something* is cutting holes in the bark of my Shamel Ash trees (pics: Tree Bites August 2007). These are fairly young trees - planted in my yard about 18 months ago. The holes are located anywhere from ground level to 5' off the ground. Other than the holes that I noticed only yesterday, the trees appear healthy (to me, but I'm far from an expert). Any thoughts?
