I don't think the roots of a willow tree or any other tree are a threat unless a pipe or a foundation is leaking--the roots follow water--they won't apply pressure to and crack a strong water-tight foundation, or get into a seamless water-tight pipe. Of course if roots grow near the surface they can heave a walk or driveway, etc., but that depends on the kind of soil. But the typical weeping willow tree gets very large--a spread of 35 or 40 feet, and 60 feet tall, or more. I love the golden weeping willows. Ours, with their bright golden twigs provide some wonderful life to the winter landscape around here. They also have golden bloom in spring and golden fall color. I understand why you want one, but you do need room. --Spruce

How small is a small yard? My wife wanted a weeping willow, so I had to find a place to plant one.My parents planted one when I was young,and it was quite large 15 years later. The place I bought mine from say's it will grow 60ft tall by 40ft in diameter on a mature tree. That would mean you should plant at least 20ft from building or property line,or other obstacle. WW is fast growing so you will have to prune alot to keep it in check.It also is not long lived. If you prune to much it may not look much like the willow you love.On the other hand if you cut it down before it gets to big for it's area,you may get 20 years or more to enjoy it.Plus it may take 5 years under good growing conditions to give you any shade. just my opinion. lp

I don't know about weeping willow. However, in case my experience applies, it would certainly be worth wasting a couple whips. My neighbor had some kind of large willow bushes. I have forgotten the name. I am sure that is related, but it may not be a regular willow; maybe Verigated Chinese (or Usbecki Becki Beckistan) Willow. Anyway, the rooting was idiot simple. Take some overgrown pruned whips or branches and stick 'em in a can of water so they don't fall over (the hard part); wait two weeks for roots; stick in ground.

you do not want any tree that claims to be fast growing.. as.. in tree time.. fast to grow.. fast to dieseas.. fast to fall apart due to week wood.. and fast to death ... is this site anywhere near your house.. and do you care if big branches start falling on your house in 20 years or so ... there really isnt any instant gratification with trees ... ken ps: and poplar and cottonwood are no better ...
