How hardy is Renae Climbing rose or Annie Laurie McDowell?
Comments (29)Nahema is NOT hardy in my zone 5 .. died after 2 winters as own-root from Roses Unlimited. I successfully rooted Nahema, but it died recently in my unheated garage with temp. at upper 20's. Annie L. McDowell survives 2 winters for me since I planted it right below the rain spout so it gets constant moisture. Winter here is -30 below zero with wind-chill factor, and Annie dies to the crown every year. For its 3rd winter, this year, I plan on watering Annie during the winter in case we don't get any snow. Zero winter-protection except for a thin layer of leaves, it's on a steep hill so I can't pile up winter-protection. I planted Annie in a deep hole with MG-potting soil and topped with dense clay to seal in the moisture. Let's see if Annie survives its 3rd winter....See MoreFinally, Annie Laurie McDowell wants to live in my garden
Comments (14)You know Ingrid, we used to have long strings of cool, foggy weather -- when the rest of SoCal was sweltering. Now . . . not so much. These days, I could feel that I was back in the San Gabriel Valley, where I grew up . . . with nights so hot, I climbed out my bedroom window, and slept on the grass . . . creeping back in just before dawn. I want my coastal fog back!...See MoreWhere to purchase Annie Laurie McDowell

Comments (61)@purilisaVA-zone7B you're welcome! Don't forget Renae, ALmD's parent. It is also wonderfully shade tolerant, continuous-flowering, remarkably well scented and a gorgeous thing. Renae was the sister of the man in Visalia who owned the drug store. She passed from cancer in the early forties. Mr. Moore named the rose to memorialize her. ALmD inherited her slow-to-start from Renae as well as her lack of prickles, tolerance for shade and delicious scent. Another of Mr. Moore's marvels without prickles is Climbing Yellow Sweetheart. It's also remarkably well scented and a gorgeous thing. Its remarkable story is presented on HMF, written by the late and continuously missed, Jim Delahanty (jimofshermanoaks) and me: "What Was Lost is Found". The rose can be found here. https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/l.php?l=2.23069 Our article, documenting the resurrection of this desirable rose is here. https://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=66.587...See Morefogrose
