Will a Crape Myrtle grow in Chicagoland?

I've been wanting to replace the dogwood in my yard that got ripped down when we put in an addition. Then I was at Home Depot this weekend and saw several red crape myrtles in 5 gallon pots.

I love red in the yard; the tree blooms for a long time and would get big enough to help hide my neighbor's pool.

Is a crape myrtle hardy in zone 5? The label says it's hardy down to about -10 degrees. I think I've seen them around here, and my mom (haha - my usual garden reference) thinks they'll be fine. I read things on the web (wikipedia, etc.) and I get the idea they're really only hardy zone 6 and south.
