Azalea & Rhododendron

New shoots are curling and deformed.

The new shoots which grew at the same time as the flowers on a (suspected) maxicat rhodie three or four weeks ago are fine - but those shoots which grew AFTER the flowers were deadheaded are curled up and deformed. Is this insect damage or heat.....we have had a spell of unusually hot weather hereabouts - but I have watered the rhodies.

Too much heat and not enough water would probably be showing browning after wilting of rhododendron growth.

Without a picture, I would guess insect. If you lived in the east, rhododendron midge would be a possibility, aphid and white fly can also cause distorted new growth. Have you checked undersides for any visible signs of insect?

Would soap solution spayed on work on insects like aphids.....?

Uh oh, classic herbicide (weedkiller) damage. If you or someone else didn't spray anywhere in the vicinity, look at this about contaminated compost & manure from WSU: http://www.puyallup.wsu.edu/soilmgmt/Clopyralid.htm Be certain to read the info about doing a bioassay. Thanks. I think I agree with the over-fertilization idea. I've since done some research on bsfl leachate ( i said i used emulsion which is incorrect, I actually use the leachate) and evidently it needs to be diluted heavily to be safe. I had been using it almost in its raw form! Im keeping my eyes open for mites or signs of them, but nothing yet. I havent broken out the magnifying glass yet tho.

Hmmm... what has your watering schedule been like? The first thing that comes to mind is possibly over / under watering due to the droopiness of the leaves but it is odd that the other branches are fine. In your second picture, that leaf that's curled with the black part on it almost makes me think it's got too much water but it's hard to say for sure so that's why I ask. Good drainage? Is there anything that could be reflecting heat on that branch - the windows? Have you applied any fertilizer or pesticides? Hard to see in the pics but are the black specks on the inflo just where flowers fell off or have you been dropping buds?

Yes, it will grow just fine :-) My first defense for aphids on any plant is to blast them off with water. Or if still a tiny plant or seedling, I just use my fingers to squish them off. My next resort would be insecticidal soap.

Yes, soap or insecticidal soap. Not for midge though, as I understand that one, all you can do is to snap off the affected foliage. There seems to be a distinct curl to the distorted leaf with midge damage, you could probably tell the difference....

Could also be leaf gall. With the cool wet weather we had this spring alot of folks have had a bad outbreak this year. Remove the affected leaves and discard.
