Georgia peach tree

Good morning all.

I've got a Georgia peach tree that I purchased from Walmart a couple of months ago and planted it in some fertilized soil when I transplanted it into the ground. And now as you can see from the picture it's not doing so well. I'm really hoping that its not beyond hope. I'd appreciate any help so I can bring it back.

Here is another picture. The bottom half of the tree is pretty much without leaves.

its basically fall ...

that is what a lot of fruit trees... especially new transplants .. look like.. in fall ...

water deeply.. PROPERLY... and maintain the mulch ...

life is all in those buds at the branch tips...

you should not have fertilized at planting.. and i suggest you never fert it again ... especially if your lawn is fertilized ....

prophylactic spraying of fruit trees... can be answered in the fruit forum... but that will start in spring.. not a month before the leaves fall off...

kek: 8-10 feet is not small for a peach tree that was planted only last spring. The tree must have been pretty big when you put it in. You had better begin to think about keeping the altitude of that baby down or it is going to get away from you. This summer would not be too early to do some summer pruing, especially in the center of the tree if it is crowded. I would reduce the overall height on such a young tree to no more than 6 feet. If you take off the top, new branches will grow in below. Peach trees need sunlight on the branches to promote fruiting bud formation, and it may be that the upper branches are shading the lower ones to such an extent that this cannot happen. With a peach tree, you want a spreading shape, open in the center to allow light to penetrate to all the branches, especially the lower ones that should be your best bearing branches. This is especially true for a tree that has such a small trunk diameter. Such a tree could easily break and blow over in the wind. Keep the top growth balanced with the size of the trunk and the age of the tree, and prune, prune, prune. The blooms you see up on top will probably not produce peaches this year, but maybe the tree will produce next year if you begin to do something soon. If your surviving tree is a Belle of Georgia, that is an older, white-fleshed variety. Very good, but subject to brown rots and extremely attractive to plum curculio and the oriental fruit moth. Thanks, I like my little slice of heaven. I knew where they were, they have been growing for a few years now, and I decided to leave them for the birds. There is no mistaking them, chokecherry trees, with a nasty looking disease to them. Seeing as how stone fruit have a co-morbidity with disease, I figured I would ask you your opinions of what might be going on. Also, is there a bacterial spot disease that affects both apple trees and peach trees, or apple, peach and chokecherry? You can see in the above photo of the apple tree (last 2 pics of first post) that the leaves on it don't look quite right either, but certainly not to the level of the peach. Would peach leaf curl have any effect on an apple tree? I took better pictures that weren't blury or close up, but the three mentioned diseases all seem like they have similar symptoms, and last year there was no noticable leafhopper activity. Curious. All you need to do on that tree maintain height you want I like 8 foot when peaches are there they be lower and weight good to sag limbs to spread. You Vase shape center after next year crop off tree. Leave all growth on out side until time to top them. Fertilize after fruits gone 10 minutes so tree make new growth a pint granulated fertilizer that pound then again at late pink bug if see flower fertilize with in 10 minutes lol your peaches be big taste good if use these practises. If dry water with one gallon water a week start after grass is dead watering...

If you can dig in your soil, plant it. Water it as needed - probably not much after the initial, soil-settling dose until it starts to grow, but keep an eye on, and a finger testing, the soil in the root ball - water if it is dry. Mulch as widely as you can - at least 3', but more is better - no deeper than 4", and put no mulch in the inch or so next to the trunk. If your soil is still frozen, then keep it somewhere cool, so it doesn't break dormancy early, but where it won't freeze hard. Keep the root ball damp, but not soggy. Plant it as soon as you can dig your soil - it will do better in the ground than staying in the pot. Keep it watered as needed - when the soil is dry 2" or so down - over the summer, and into next year. I would do no pruning until it has been in the ground for the summer, and probably not 'til next spring - the more leaves it has, the more roots it can grow over the summer. You want to prune it to a vase shape - get a book on home orchards and see what it has to say about pruning fruit trees, and especially peach trees. You don't prune fruit trees as you prune ornamentals - you are looking for the best fruit growth, not the most attractive tree, so it is a bit different. It will take a few years for it to grow up enough to flower and fruit - at least 2, maybe 5. I don't know if that cultivar will need a pollinator or not - you may have to get another peach tree to plant near it.

Good answer Ken. You purchased and planted the tree in the most intense months of the year. It had suffered the indignities of shipping, and sitting in a retail sales lot of a box store. (not the most gentle thing on a tree). It basically does not look at this point much different than I'd expect it to look and I raise my own peach trees. Do the mulch/water thing like Ken said, and you may want to put some sort of rodent/rabbit guard around its young trunk because this is the age of tree most susceptible to damage from them. Next spring you'll be in a much better position when it starts to leaf out again to evaluate it. Patience.

Thank you for the responses, I definitely appreciate the help. We've gotten quite a bit of rain fall where I live so it hasn't gone without water. When I saw the shape of the leaves and how they were coming off not long after I planted it I got a bit fearful that it had gotten some disease and was dying. I'll try to be a bit more patient. And keep in mind that despite the name, this tree is not native to Georgia at all ....

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like there's a lot of insect damage to the leaves. Naturally the tree's going to look bad when it's half-eaten (figuratively speaking).

A couple of my oaks are looking like this . The catipillars are out. I will dust with bt , but the damage is done to the leaves. My buds on the trees look fine, and your buds should still be fine for next year. I have an Elberta peach tree. It is loaded with fruit but they never get sweet and fleshy. The fruit ends up going to our neighbors friend who makes wine with some of them.I woud remove it but it's my dad's tree. Along with his apples that I don't spray so if yoyu want to eat them you cut off the bug holes Etc.
