echinacea Pow Wow Wild Berry

I'm wondering if anyone has grown this one and has any comments on it . I visited the MN Landscape Arboretum about a week ago and saw this one. It was still looking phenomenal, color looked to hold well and it was still loaded with blooms. It's an AAS winner and is said to bloom the first year from seed if started in Jan. And yes, it's a perennial. Just wondering if the great looks are because it was seed grown and came into bloom later or if it will always bloom well this late in the season. There is also a Pow Wow White.

Hazzard's has the seeds for sale but they're pricey. Echinaceamaniac has given it thumbs up in another thread. I'm ordering seeds to winter sow--a friend & I are going to split the seeds/cost.

I would expect any ultra-fresh looking plants now are a result of scheduling as opposed to true performance in the garden for the entire summer.

In any case, I've only seen nursery specimens, and it looks like a good strain. Comments from others have only been positive.

That gaura/Russian sage photo is the one Botanical Interests uses on their website page for Gaura lindheimeri. Yup, they even posted my name as the photographer. [Click to watch swelled head growing bigger] Planting those two together was totally by chance/accident. I stuck the gaura beside the RS and was blown away by how amazing they looked together. I took SO many pictures of them! aklinda - gaura is only hardy to Z5 and the year I took that photo we had a 4-month long drought when not a drop of rain fell. The gaura was winter sown so it was tough but I really wondered if it would survive. It did and I never gave it any supplemental water. It just bloomed non-stop the whole season right up until frost. I think I have a few seeds left from the ones I harvested. Let me know if you want them for BEAP. I can't guarantee they'd thrive where you are but they bloom first year from seed so I'd say they're worth a shot. ispahan - kudos accepted with gratitude! Russian sage is slow to fill out but I think it's well worth the wait. I have several plants growing in various beds around the garden that I'm waiting to see mature and full. As if looks weren't enough, they're both bee magnets! The bees are on the gaura non-stop all season. The Pow Wow Wild Berry Echinacea I winter sowed last year should bloom this year and I'm SO excited to see those gorgeous, vivid blooms. Be sure to check back here for photos!

I am excited to hear that Echinaceas will bloom the first year from seed. I winter sowed lots of Echs last year, and I'm anxious to see what they look like! Mostly hybrids, so who knows what I will get - probably all plain purple. :) But it will be nice to find out this year.

Terene, Your columbine origami mixed color seeds will bloom the first year from seed. I planted mine a few years ago in mid March and they bloomed in June through the end of July. They have a long bloom period, rebloom actually and you don't need to dead head them. A friend of mine sowed some of my origami blue seeds last spring, in mid April and they bloomed for her all of the month of July. Since your's are mixed colors, you don't know what each plant will bloom in color till the bloom. You might want to plant each seedling as an individual until it blooms. Once you know which seedling is which color, when they finish blooming, you can move the plants into clumps of like colors to have larger plants for next year. If you don't care if they bloom mixed together than just plant them as clumps. I sowed mine, but they where all individual colors in cottage cheese containers, with about 15 seeds together in each container sort of scattered in the center of the container. then I planted the seedlings as one clump. If you purchase the plants in the nurseries, it is usually in a large container that has at least 10 plants in it. That's how a friend of mine that owns a farm and greenhouse in the area I live in sows seeds, and told me how to sow the seeds. They are worth the time to sow and the expense, they are a beautiful long term bloomer and stay nice and bushy, not to tall, not to short. Fran

I planted mine from seeds through winter sowing this past winter. The plants look amazing compared to the other varieties of echinacea that I either had previously in my garden or just bought this year. Haven't had many blooms but I didn't expect many. The packet says they bloom the first year if they are planted by January. Mine didn't sprout until much later than that.

Thanks for the input kowalleka. The ones I saw in the trial garden at the arb looked fantastic and I am NOT a big echinacea fan (sorry echinacemaniac). Add to that that many of the new ones really left me feeling cold to them. But this one literally stopped me in my tracks, the color, the number of blooms.. I guess just the whole package.

I'm not so impressed by the color, as it looks somewhat muddy. I'd prefer a nicer clarity of color such as in 'Vintage Wine' or 'Fatal Attraction'. Its performance, habit and great bloom season are quite impressive however. Here's a pic of it in July at the Ball trial gardens in West Chicago, IL. White was less exciting, I think I'll stick to 'Little Angel' for now. Also came across a great mix of orange blends in the AAS trial for the future. Looks to be of similar breeding, and this was the most exciting thing in the trial garden to me. Also exciting were the black petunias.

I got a packet to 10 seeds from Park seeds and planted 1 on Sep 1. It sprouted in about 3 weeks, but then hasnt gone beyond the initial 2 leaves. Its indoors near a window. Will it grow indoors in bright light? Is it just slow to start? Since I have only 9 more seeds, I dont want to lose it.

Add some supplemental lighting above those plants. I leave mine on 24/7. You may need to add a small fan to blow across them. This really helps them keep from staying too wet. Shop lights or aquarium lights work really well for Echinaceas. In fact, I have better results with those than grow lights. Keep them near the window still.
