Rain barrel question

I got my first rain barrel installed just before we received three days of steady, drenching rain. And on the second day, I learned Lesson #1: make sure the stopcock is in the OFF position.

So now that I realize what an ignoramus I am, I thought I'd better ask you experts before I do anything else. I was thinking that instead of putting mosquito dunks in the water, I could just pour some food grade oil on the top of the water. It would spread and prevent the mosquito larvae from having oxygen. Plus, it would always float to the top when new rainwater flowed into the barrel.

Please let me know if this is a good idea or not.

Thanks, Ginny
