Summing up August. The biggest August gems this year were:

Phlox Miss Pepper. Look at the foliage:

Rudbeckia laciniata Starcadia Razzle Dazzle.It grows only to 120 cm with me and clumps nicely.

Phlox amplifolia Minehaha. Look at the foliage:

Echinacea Champagne Bubbles. The best white ever.

Helenium Flammenrad. The best Helenium in existence. Big, bold , tall, storm proof. Here together with Rudbeckia Herbstsonne (Autumn Sun)

Heliopsis Asahi. Unbelievable this year. Foliage dark green and shiny.

Agastaches (Black Adder left, Blue Fortune right). They surprised me as being more hardy than I'd thought. While other plants were dying like flies during the winter, they all survived.

Lilium lancifolium Flore Pleno. It gives tons of colour and grows where I put it.

Sanguisorba Pink Brushes. The most spectacular of them all.

Monarda Balance(= Libra). Foliage still clean . Branches galore.

Kalimeris Madiva. I'm just so glad I discovered it.

Leucanthemum Stina . The best double, stands nicely. Leucanthemums get nailed by the winter. Only Stina, Fiona Coghill and Manhattan survived intact. The rest died or severely damaged

Rudbeckia laciniata Goldkugel. Unlike the old Hortensia, this one is a clumper and selfsupporting. Why it is so underused is beyond my imagination. A jewel. 1,5 m tall.

Aconitum variegatum paniculatum. The best monkshood for August. Sulfsupporting with clean foliage.

Greenhaven, I'm so glad you posted pictures. Welcome! You've really done a tremendous job in a short period of time. How lucky to have all that ledge and the way you've incorporated the gardens is really great. It all looks quite natural. PL, Love those sunflowers! I've tried them from seed before a handful of times, but as soon as I get them planted the chipmunks come along and dig them up while mocking me. Jewel weed brings me back to nature walks with my mom. Used to use it on poison ivy. I always thought it was a great cure, but as I got older I realized I'm not allergic to poison ivy, so I'm not sure if my "tests" as a child were valid! It looks great in such a mass like that. I guess I made it just in the nick of time to post for August. Hard to believe tomorrow is September. I know there was some talk in another thread about the smaller butterfly bushes. They're kind of hard to photograph, but I have three in a row forming a bit of a hedge and I really like the way they bloom later. There was also a discussion about heptacodium on another thread where everyone said it would break and most were unhappy with it. That really changed the way I'm treating this shrub/tree. I was planning on limbing it up into a tree, but after reading everyone's experiences I've decided to leave it more as a very large shrub, or at least a non-limbed up tree. The hibiscus are in bloom now on the other side of the fence. Those will stay when we get our new fence later this fall. I've never done annual asters before, but this middle bed of the veggie garden starts as lettuce and once the crop is done I let the nasturtium take over. I threw in some annual asters and I have to say I really like them a lot. One of the back beds with zinnias still going. Another bed back there. Holy cow! The bees are insane with the turtlehead and anemone blooming. Interestingly, the bees swarm to the barely open anemone flowers with 5 or 6 of them all huddled and fighting for space. The open flowers are not touched. The lespedeeza is starting its show. I do wish the clethra would bloom just a tad later so the white would be blooming with the pink. Here's a closer shot of one of the back beds. There's a carpet rose blooming in the bed behind the butterfly bushes. I like the peach and blue combo with the physocarpos mixed in for good measure. Love the fairy rose that comes back strong while so many other plants are withering in the heat! The front slope is filled in with all the colorful shrubs. Lobelia and caryopteris. I put them together because the caryopteris can hold up the lobelia when it flops. Cottage garden gone wild! I really, really, really love amsonia hubrichtii. I'll post this picture again when the amsonia and the climbing hydrangea both turn glowing yellow. Ironweed is great this time of year. Okay, okay, I'll stop! LOL! I get carried away. There is so much going on in the garden now and so much more to come. Such a great time of year.

Thank you Margo!! Finally packing up prizes and such for August swaps and it's GREAT to see someone using a gift you've sent. Made my day! I didn't pop in on your hummingbird question on the other thread as I have a couple of Anna's (they're the hardiest) that overwinter here - or at least do until there's a few snow storms. I'd keep feeding until you don't see one for a week or two - you might get stragglers who stayed close to feeders migrating late.

I'm working my way backwards from bottom to top today because my brain is tired and only wants to remember what it read most recently. In general, the reason you're seeing so many wasps, Nancy, probably is because we have had tons and tons of caterpillars all season, and the wasps feed on the cats. I have seen a lot of blue thread-waisted wasps carrying various caterpillars out of the garden this year. They take them back to their nests to feed their young, stashing them away, paralyzed, so that their young can feed on them. In years with significant fewer cats, we see significantly fewer wasps. Like everything else in nature, the level of the predator population rises and falls with the level of the prey population. Butterfly-lovers don't like seeing caterpillars carried away but it is the ecosystem and food web in action and I don't interfere with it. We always have a lot of bees here, perhaps because pesticide usage is fairly low out here in the sticks. There's plentiful butterflies pretty much every year, though it seemed like their numbers fell through the floor during the horrific drought of 2011. The population rebounded though when better weather conditions returned. We have had dogs that have chased the deer, but after Honey and Jersey ran off into the woods to do that once and became entrapped and surrounded by coyotes determined to engage them in battle, we stopped letting the dogs run freely and keep them confined to the fenced dog yard for their own safety now. I never want to hear the sounds of dogs and coyotes engaged in battle ever again, and I don't want to see our dogs with the hair/flesh pulled out of their hips by the attacking coyotes either. Our dogs suffered only mild plucking like that, but we've had friends whose dogs have come home with their rear haunches looking like raw hamburger meat. Y'all probably don't have coyotes in abundance there like we have them along the river here, so Titan probably isn't in the same danger if he runs off a bit. I enjoy seeing the possums, but not the coons because they will prey on chickens. I'm not crazy about seeing skunks either, especially in the daylight hours, but they're part of the ecosystem too. I don't mind seeing the foxes and bobcats as long as they aren't after our poultry. There's an endless array of wildlife to see here and I like that, but some days there's too much of it too close to our pets. It is crazy y'all still cannot use the boat, but that rain just keeps falling in parts of NE OK, and it has to run off somewhere. Our lake and river levels have been back to normal since probably June but the heavy rainfall stopped here long ago. Since so much of our river water comes from SW OK and they are in drought, there's not a lot of water flowing downstream now and huge sandbars continue to emerge from the river. It is not yet so dry that you can walk across the river without having to wade through some water, so there's still more water in the river this August than in most years. Some years I freeze summer squash. Of course, as with everything else, it changes the texture, but the squash still can be used in squash casserole, which is my favorite way to cook it (other than frying it, and we don't eat a lot of fried food any more). You can make squash pickles or squash relish though. Our school system in Marietta has dealt with the school supply issue by supplying all those school supplies for each child themselves these last few years. I think that is pretty wonderful even though I know they are making budgetary sacrifices elsewhere in order to be able to provide the supplies. Our community in Marietta has been really good about supporting bond elections to improve the schools since at least the early 2000s, so it seems like one building or another (or one athletic facility or another) always is in the process of being improved, built, replaced or whatever is appropriate in each given case. Thackerville has not had the same success, and saw bond elections fail for probably a solid decade before finally getting one to pass so they could build a new elementary school. Here there is a lot of support for the schools, but still the tax dollars can only be stretched so far. Larry, I have some family members who will not work either and it frustrates me because they are capable of working. Instead, they have learned every-which-way to work the system and get stuff free. I love them but this sort of behavior is not how my parents raised us and I don't care for it myself. When they plead poverty, I ignore them because I know they are capable of working and supporting themselves. If they want to have more cash to spend, they should work. I'd better shut up now before I say too much about them. They were taught how to work, they know how to work, but they'd rather not do it. Ooops. Gotta get off my soapbox. The deer were crazy yesterday. I cut up some cucumber and tossed them on the compost pile for them and they acted like it was Christmas. Then they stalked me the rest of the day every time I went outdoors, so I won't do that again for a while because I don't want them expecting such things every day. No wonder I never get much compost out of that back compost pile--the deer eat things before they can decompose. Some days the deer stand in our neighbors' woodland, right on the edge, and just watch me all day. I know they are wishing I'd leave the garden gate open so they could wander into the garden and eat. Well, I'm not going to do that, but sometimes they startle me because I'm not expecting to have one standing nearby, perhaps under a tree or two, staring at me. It gets sort of creepy after a while. Jennifer, We have watered so long and hard around all our concrete slabs, using soaker hoses, trying to prevent cracking in dry summers, but when all the land around you is cracking badly, you really cannot prevent it. It is very frustrating. I hope your slab in the coop doesn't crack too badly. Rain before September sounds great but I don't see anything in the long-range forecast that makes me think it is likely to happen. In some years when we let the chickens hatch their eggs, we'd get about 80% roosters. It doesn't make any sense to me, but it happens, and that is why we do not often let them hatch out eggs---we don't need more roosters! We've always let our babies run with the adults once they are about half-grown. The adults protect them and teach them to protect themselves from all the wild things. I've never seen bagworms here. I suspect they might be on cedar trees on our neighbors' place across the property line from my garden, but we've always done our best to cut down the cedars that appear on our property so we don't have to deal with bag worms. It seems odd they just popped up on your apple trees, but then so many things are odd this year. With regards to poverty, there's always going to be some people looking for a free ride---always has been, always will be. I have no pity for those who want the rest of society to support them, especially if they have high expectations and expect to be given fancy shoes, for example. There's a difference between true poverty that a family cannot overcome and choosing to be poor and dependent on others because one is lazy and shiftless and we all know that. I just hate seeing children being brought up that way---if a child is taught by example how to obtain housing vouchers, WIC, SNAP, free cell phones, food from the food bank to supplement what they get from WIC and SNAP, free school supplies at those big back-to-school events and free gifts at Christmas, then what are they being taught? They're being taught how to depend on others to give you things instead of being taught how to work, earn your living and be responsible for yourself. That is the part that is so unfortunate. To change society, we have to teach those children who grow up that way that there is a different way to live or the cycle perpetuates itself. To me, changing mindsets like that is the real challenge. To me, there's a difference between people who make a career out of being dependent on social programs and charities and people who temporarily fall on hard times and truly need help until they get back on their feet. I see it in my own extended family---and we have bailed out those kids once or twice but won't do it again because they won't work to support themselves. When I grew up we were taught you'd better get an education and be able to support yourself because "TANSTAAFL", i.e. There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. It was just a given that people grow up and support themselves and their families. Nowadays the problem is that there is such a thing as a free lunch, and more, and it has given us a lot of people who expect a free ride. I'm grateful we had parents who taught us to work for what we want, though not all my siblings are willing to do that work. I could tell you stories....but I won't. Sigh...... The kids here started school yesterday so my FB feed was full of bright, shining faces in new school outfits carrying brand new backpacks. The kids seem excited to be back in school, and the parents are possibly even more excited to have them back in the normal routine again. Our own granddaughters looked pretty adorable. Lillie started 5th grade, which means middle school is next year. Oh wow. None of us are ready for that! Aurora started four-year-old pre-K and was so very excited. She wore an outfit we let her pick out herself when we took her school clothes shopping---thankfully she chose a skirt and a top that actually coordinated well with each other. (grin) We are going to have a good-bad weekend. At least one of the granddaughters is coming to spend the weekend, and we might have both. It depends on whether she goes to her dad's house as expected, which is iffy, because so often they don't even hear from him when it is supposed to be his weekend. So, if she doesn't go to his house, we'll have both of the girls. That's the good part of the weekend. The bad part is we're going down to Fort Worth tomorrow to finish cleaning out mom's stuff so we can list the house with a realtor. I think that the work itself won't be too hard---our niece already has bagged up and gotten rid a lot of the smaller, personal items like clothing and shoes, and we're going to sit there and equitably divide old photos and stuff. Then we'll load up various appliances and furniture items that will be going home with some of my siblings and nieces and nephews. We don't plan to bring back anything like furniture here as our house is fully furnished and so is Chris'. My brother, who is the executor of mom's estate, expects the house to sell pretty quickly---it is on a lot-and-a-half on a street corner directly across from the local park in a very family-friendly neighborhood and houses like that usually sell fairly fast in that neighborhood. So, the hardest thing about tomorrow is that it may be the last time we're all together at mom's house while it still is mom's house. This house has been in our family since the 1940s and it is hard to think of it no longer being ours. I need to get out to the garden to harvest and water, and I'm sure there's feral cats, deer and wild birds waiting for breakfast. Sometimes I wonder how the chickens ever gain any weight because they seem to share their daily hen scratch with everybody, including squirrels. Have a great day everyone. Have never seen the sanguisorba pink brushes - it's so unusual! the monkshood and white flowers are a beautiful combo. what is the white - sweet autumn clematis?

great color, healthy plants, lovely combinations, love it!

Stunning. Most of the cultivars you've named I've never heard of...but am interested. I spotted the hen in one of the photos. How many do you have, and do they roam the gardens eating slugs???

Oh, I have more than 20 hens, and a lot of chicks and youngsters. The old ones are normally in their pens and I let them go outside the garden for half an hour a day.

Only youngsters are allowed to roam the garden because they do less damage to the plants.I have to protect some plants, especially hostas. I have not observed live slugs are on their menu, but when killed and dried by sun, then some hens eat them. Some hens eat whole snails.This winter was very hard and killed the slugs. I have not seen a single slug yet this summer.

Oh...you posted more chickens! Fabulous pics! I did notice the lone chicken in your Monarda pic and thought about how romantic to have a few chickens running around in the garden. Do you think the chickens are more helpful or harmful to the garden? Do they dig up seedlings?

Cracking, the white plant in front of monkshood is Thalictrum delavayi (Album).

How long have you had "Sanguisorba Pink Brushes"?

As I understand it is a relatively 'new' introduction....is it even available in North America?

How tall has it grown and any idea on its hardiness?

Crackintheconcrete, it is a monkshood Aconitum 'Bicolor'.

Terrene, they dig up seedlings and young plants, so I only let the old hens go in the garden in winter and late autumn.There are some plants they never eat,but others are in danger.I never spray with anything because I have small chicks running free. I read about plants, which are more resistant to mildew and wind/rain damage, and then buy them. It is not always true. I have several phloxes I have never seen mildew on: Phlox amplifolia Minehaha and Winnetou, Phlox paniculata Miss Pepper, Herbstwalzer, Purpurkuppel and one nameless.Others are highly resistant if the weather is good for them. If a phlox gets mildew very late in the season like late September or October, then it does not bother me. But if a plant is totally white already in July, then out it goes. The worst so far was the old Russian variety Uspech(known also as Laura) which I said goodbye to. Other phloxes I threw out was Dusterlohe(aka Nicky) and Iris: could not stand on its own and I do not have time for staking. I gave one more chance for Blaue Morgen and Drosselbart, but they will go out if they do the same next year.

Here are some more August gems:

Helenium Topaz. While Flammenrad finishes in the end of August, this one sails into September. Very broad and healthy leaves. First class plant.

Arbo retum, the place where I live is marked temperature wise as zone 7, but we have very little or no snow cover, so I can't keep plants which are not marked as hardy to zone 5 in the US, I think. I can't grow Lobelia cardinalis, Stokesia, Salvia azurea, Asclepias tuberosa and others from the US. This year I have even had damages on hosta crowns and daylilies. One bed of tall bearded iris was totally wiped out except Stepping Out and Spinning Wheel. So you can't compare zones just by comparing numbers. I am not American and have never been there(my wife is afraid of flying).

Rouge21, I have had it for two years. I think all Sanguisorbas are very hardy(except Chocolate Tip, which died from MILDEW ! in my garden). It has grown to about 1 m. It was shaded by a tall neighbor and it has leaned, so I can't tell, whether it is totally selfsupporting or not.

Stellar! I just love your garden wieslaw. Aconitum and Helenium are two of my favorite plants too. It seems the selection of Helenium is much greater in Europe than here. It is a shame, beacause I would love to have a collection as great as yours! I agree with you about 'Spark's Variety' Aconitum. Since moving mine to a sunnier spot it seems much more upright.

Is that Thalictrum delavayi in front of your Aconitum variegatum paniculatum, or some other species?

I enjoyed the pictures and have tried many of the plants that you have. Unfortunately I've lost many of those plants. Here in Vancouver in BC, Canada, it rains a lot. I think the Kalimeris particularly hated the rain and that's why it just melted away. Too bad. I loved the color and form.

We're allowed up to 5 chickens here, and seeing yours makes me want them all the more.

It is interesting that so many cultivars of North American natives are grown in Europe. I love our natives too and have a large back garden that consists almost entirely of plants native to eastern North America, both species and cultivars.

Do you find that any of our natives have become pests in your country? Lythrum salicaria is an example of a beautiful European native that has become an extremely invasive weed in the wetlands, and to a lesser extent the non-wetlands, in the northeast US. It is a beautiful plant, and has superior nectar and pollen for pollinators, but it is a prohibited plant in our state because of its invasiveness.

Christinmk, yes the white Thalictrum is delavayi. I think you can buy seeds at Jelitto's. I think it is only borderline hardy for me. There is one very similar species called Thalictrum rocherbrunianum which is hardier and stands better, but only in lavender colour. You can have thalictrums everywhere, as they occupy no space and do no damage to the plants standing next to them.

I have forgotten about Aster umbellatus.Big clumps are magnificent. Irreplacable for combinations:

Terrene, to my knowledge some solidagos and Lupinus polyphyllus spread to the nature. The latter one mainly along rail roads. Other plants only marginally , if at all.

Terrene - regarding your question about American natives spreading. Solidago canadensis, Conyza canadensis and Aster species and hybrids (commonly known here as Michaelmas daisies) have naturalised in the UK and are found in the wild. As wieslaw59 says, this is very common along railway lines.

Others eg Helianthus tuberosus, Hemerocallis, Chelone and Parthenocissus quinquifolia grow well but do not spread much because our summers are not hot enough for them to set seed. I can't think of any plants from N America which are considered actually invasive. But we have several from Asia like Rhododendron ponticum, Himalayan balsam, Japanese knotweed and Buddleja.

It looks like a Helenium to me. Do a Google images search and look at all the pictures that come up. At least a couple different ones have a greenish tinge to the yellow.

Thanks, I think it can be an Echinacea. I think it is too short to be a Helenium , and too daisy-like.

Oh, my, that garden is stunning!! It makes me wish there were a translation program for videos like there is for web pages . . . I can see spending some time in this set of videos. Is this a public garden that you can visit, wieslaw59?

Nhbabs, this garden is in Germany a little north from Hamburg, and I'm high up north in Denmark (360 km or 4 hours driving). I only understand each 4th word in German, but I can read on his site, that the garden is open to the public each first Sunday from May to October, plus 2 days in June and the 18th of August. The entrance costs 3 Euro.
As far as I understand, he owns a nursery in the vicinity of the garden.

mmmmmfabulous thalictrums - mine never last beyond July but my soil is testing for them. Love the heleniums too. What would you recommend for a really good TALL red helenium (My late summer border is drowning in blues and yellows). I love your gardens, Wieslaw, especially against the blue timber building - there is something awfully familiar and reminiscent of the fens in the light - maybe huge skies?

Campanula, for some reason the majority of the tall heleniums is yellow or orange , and the red ones are medium tall. I have one red that is taller than the others, unfortunately NOID. Of the red ones whose names are known the tallest with me is Indianersommer, and it is only slightly above 1 m with me. I like that one. I started with Moerheim Beauty, which had very beautiful flowers, unfortunately the stems are very thin and can't take our wind+rain combination
In the link below you can see Dauerbrenner, which is listed as more than 1.5 m tall, but I do not know its sturdiness.

The catalogues are old but as far as I understand they are still valid(but in German). This nursery produces a lot of their own Heleniums and Phloxes.
