Does WSing keep you up at night?

March. While wildly unpredictable as far as wavering temps, it is apparently very predictable in its "In like a Lion, out like a Lamb," and "March Winds" generalities.

So last night we got wind. LOTS of wind. First chance that I got to see how the New Digs were going to hold up, seeing's how we live out in the open, up on a hill, with the back 40 getting the winds whipping from the north, where I just moved the setup to.

I couldn't sleep. At all. I think I was wide awake til at least 12:15 listening to the wind whipping, getting up to pee and peeking out the window at the containers to make sure they didn't get tossed. Of course, the flip side of this is: what, exactly was I going to do if they DID? I wasn't about to change the setup or move anything, so if anything happened, it would obviously be too late by the time I'd hear the *crash!* Lying awake was in vain.

Although I did opt to donn the muck-boots and go out in my jammies at one point and move the empty shelving unit nearer to the house so it wouldn't blow away.

This is just nuts.

Yes. It keeps me awake. I stay up too plant sowing just one more container, several times over. I fall asleep looking at seed catalogs. I dream of where to plant out and the next bed to dig up. I wake up in a cold sweat realizing I forgot to sow something that needed strat. I experience fitful sleep trying to think of the best way to help someone who has posted a question. It definitely keeps me awake.

So even to people who are real mommies, seed-babies cause sleep loss! Wow!

When I go to bed, I CANNOT take a catalog with me, and I CANNOT start planning beds or garden projects. The catalog will only keep me up for the length of the catalog, but once I get started planning the garden, I just lay there for hours with my mind racing. That's not exactly WS, but it's directly related to it. If I were buying plants, I'd only have 10 plants to place every year!

My Seed-OCD has simply gotten more focused/selective with experience. Hi, I'm Tina, and this is my third wintersowing season. 1) Used to file seed packets in alphabetized mailing envelopes by the general type of seed (one envie for Rudbeckias); Now have so many different kinds that 3"x5" baggies filed alphabetically in rows, separated by cardboard dividers, in a plastic tote (well, maybe two) is much more efficient. 2) Used to think really hard bout what to sow when, which seeds were higher priority to get done, and tried listing sow/germination/etc date in a spreadsheet (along with light needs, height, etc - frankly felt like I wasting a ton of time with that recording part!); Now my Have list for seed trading is my starting point for the wintersowing list, and I just go through my ordered bin to add in the only-for-me seeds. Then I separate them by perennial (left) or annual (right), and chunk those onto different sheets and print. Everything will be sown - in which order does not matter. I now know what kinds of growing conditions most of my plants need, and can look up a few online as needed when I plant out. I no longer care when it was sown and when it germinated, because I will have so many jugs, that I just plant out as things need planting out, and by the time I'm nearly done -- I'll know what did not sprout because that jug is still sitting there. 3) Used to put the name of the plants on the bottom of the jug along with a number that corresponded to a list, and then had to fuss with plant stake-labels when planting out. Now I have the paint-pen label in the jug when I sow. Jugs are numbered corresponding to a list. 4) Used to use the flapped milkjug method, with a four-snip drainage hole system, then had to hack most jugs apart to get the plants out better. Now I reuse the old jugs (and just write the number already on the jug onto my seed list, then will re-order that by number when I'm done), whack some tape on there to hold it shut, and will cut any new jugs nearly in half (with the handle hinge method) from the get-go. 5) Used to put more than 1 thing in a jug (often 4, sometimes even 6) with fussy dividers, and some things mixed themselves more than I would like. Now one-thing-in-a-jug, and only a few exceptions when I don't have much seed from a trade, and then only a 4-way divide. And I'm mixing general things alot (no more "let's keep these three different unidentified blue borage packs separate). Bah! Mix 'em! It will all get sown. Anything that grows will all get planted. If it's planted, it WILL flower! (says the Czarina to her garden) I've just learned what matters to me, and what I need to do it fast. Focused SOCD. Retired prof, you're in good company here! Many just aim at "high-achievement gardening" in different ways. You're in the skill/concept acquisition part, and will see what you change next season. Hey Laura, Got all the bottles clean. Now I just need more ProMix. Thanks again for doing all the work of cutting and putting holes in them, it really cuts down on a lot of work. It's a great idea to offer them especially to newbie winter sower's, I'm sure they like me would appreciate it!! Trish

How do you keep up with your gardening? Lists?

I know I 'shouldn't' be here but the posting intrigued me. I have an overall plan of where I want my garden to go. I'm aware that, as trees reach maturity, my light values are changing and the garden needs to be moved from the plantings that were appropriate earlier to more stable/perennial plantings now. Instead of chirping 'Ooo Ooo! Bulb season!' I have a small list of treasures I'm pursuing - and catching - which means I'm not annually overwhelmed with vast quantities of plant material needing attention. Whew! I faithfully keep a garden diary in which I record the weather and when particular plants show up in the garden, and that helps me plan ahead for what I want to see in combination. I find it is the combination of previous experience with my garden intentions and outrageous aspirations which then get put into both my 'do today' list and on my blackboard reminder list for the 'soon, but not desperately urgent' work. I also use my workbase blackboard to remind me where I've put things 'for shelter and safety' so I don't find the frizzled remains some time later. When I'm working on other people's gardens I keep my notes and lists in a loose-leaf ring binder. I also use a 'carry with me' small notebook and pencil stub (seems to work better in damp and mud!) for catching any ideas or reminders. Some jobs can easily be done while doing the daily garden prowl - if you carry a small bucket, secateurs, and a light weeding fork. Keeps the annual weed problem well in check, even in wet weather that makes heavy work not practical.

My DH uses those soft earplugs all the time. One day they started disappearing from the dish he’d keep them in and he was finding them all over the house in the strangest of places. Turns out our cat was completely fixated with them. She’d carry them around in her mouth, toss them with her paws, watch them bounce around and then attack them. It was a hoot to watch. He didn’t have the heart to take them from her so he bought some more and started keeping them in his desk drawer instead. A couple of weeks later the problem started up again and we caught her opening the drawer with her paw. It was hilarious.

Nothing keeps me awake at night, absolutely nothing. Not even huge storms or thunderous lightening. My husband marvels at how I can be asleep the minute my head hits the pillow and magically awaken at 5 a.m.

Once I wake in the morning though, that's it. My brain is finished with sleeping and I am in awake mode no matter what. That's why I'm usually on the forum so early- what else am I going to do while the rest of the world slumbers?

It keeps me awake, too. Why isn't the cabbage up? Maybe I didn't buy the right potting mix? Did I bury the seeds too deeply?

I'm thinking probably just newbie WSing stress...

Many things keep me up at night - WSing isn't usually one of them! Sometimes I will surf and post on GW when not sleeping though.

Gardening is more of a retreat from the headaches of the rest of life. And it helps that the containers are tucked away in the back of the house, where they are out of sight from the road, sheltered from prevailing winds (which are fierce in the front of the house), and partially sheltered by shrubbery. The seeds are safe and happy. And I know there'll be plenty of sprouts in a month or 2 (even if everything doesn't sprout)! :)

That d... wind kept me awake too... my greenhouse is directly out of my bedroom door, last year it got blown to the ground twice, so my hubby put some heavy sand bags to anchor it.
I love thinking about what I WS tomorrow before I fall asleep...
this change of time did not do me any good as my internal clockwork is still on other time...

Mostly WSing helps me sleep. Dreaming of flowers seems to lead to peaceful dreaming. Unfortunately my son (age 2) has recently transitioned to his big boy bed and still wakes during the night. Especially if he rolls out from under the covers. I often check the forum at these times once I get him all covered back up.

I did go out at four a.m. once because it was raining and I forgot to put the lid back on one of my WS bins. I just threw on my boots and coat over the nightgown and out I went.

Definitely has me peeking outdoors if we're gettin' weird weather.. another *ODD* thing I do is I will wake up and immediately start reciting names of plants I googled the day before... spelling them over and over in my head.. I'm such a plant dork!
