What to put in an empty garden bed? Hmmm...

Well, I got my brothers, mom, uncle, and anybody else I could grab to help me pull weeds, pull out landscape fabric, dig out old shrubs (HUGE red twig dogwoods), and roto-till in some organic matter. We weren't able to get all of the roots out with the red twig dogwoods, but I think we got most of them. For the organic matter, I used 6 bags of cotton burr compost and 6 bags of mushroom compost (against my better judgement). After the job was done and the roto-tiller was returned (we rented it) my dad poured a bag of peat moss over the whole bed (even though I told him not to). Anyways, it was a long, painful process, and now it's finally over. Now, I need some ideas of what I should put in this bed (which I'd like to be a perennial bed). Shrubs are nice, but when they get big, they are IMPOSSIBLE to get out!! I do not want to repeat this process EVER AGAIN!! Anyways, the area gets partial shade in some areas, and full sun on the other side.
