Are there any rhododendrons/azaleas apart from Rh. simsii (Indian azalea) that are suitable for a subtropical climate (USDA 11)?
Yes, the so-called "Vireyas". I believe there is a yahoo group that discusses them. Or have a look here: http://www.bovees.com/
The vireyas are tropical. They will not tolerate a freeze. Many have very bright colors. They are epiphytes for the most part and are grown like tropical orchids.
{{gwi:386381}}Vireya Rhododendron macgregoriae.
