Red and Mauve Old Roses with longest vase life?

I have and adore 'Glendora' and 'Forestville Purple Pom-Pom' and I'd like another rose to go in a row of fragrant Old Garden Roses from the 1800's that
-is mauve or red.
-is very fragrant
-has a long vase life, more than 4 days without shattering in summer heat, here in California, would be great.
-repeats. Gallica roses rarely do well here.
-available in commerce or if cuttings are available from a kindly rose angel. .

Ulrich Brunner Fils meets your criteria, Lux. It is healthy here, even this year when every Portland (except Jacque Cartier) decided to get rust all of a sudden, many other types got PM, and a few got novel fungi I've never even seen before at this place (most of this, thankfully, has passed). UBF stayed clean through it all. Wants to be tall but I prune it like a hybrid tea and it is fine with that. It gives long-stemmed bouquets that last quite well in a vase, nice heavy scent. Oh -- and it has no thorns!

Ulrich Brunner's a great rose. I love him. But I wouldn't call him red or mauve, hard to describe. Also, he's a big tall boy. I've seen specimens in Healdsburg over 6 feet tall so careful placement is necessary if you don't want to prune. Yes for vase life and wonderful fragrance.

I had Blue Chip and am replacing it. It died from the Easter 07 freeze. Plant is compact, repeat flowers fairly quickly, flowers prone to bull-nosing and burning in our hot summer heat. Otherwise, it is a nice florist's rose for the garden. Seven Seas almost perished from the freeze. It has many ruffled petals but is not very vigorous. Shocking Blue almost perished from the freeze, but it is trying to come back. It was doing fairly well. I actually did get some small sprays. Vol de Nuit I had at my other house in Washington. Flowers were okay; I thought it was an average rose for that climate. Can't speak to a hot, humid climate for that rose. Blue Bayou I had to plants. The grafted one perished in the big freeze; the own-root plant barely hung on. I am getting another one of these also. Flowers are very silvery and have more of a pale blue cast to them when compared to some of the other lavenders which have more red to their color. I have not seen any large sprays on this variety either. That is all the comments I have on your list.

Actually, Gorey wrote and illustrated many bizarre books, and his home is a museum on Cape Cod, I believe. I got Clare one of his books for Christmas a couple of years ago. It was about these strange children, and I think it was written in verse. It was called The Gashlycrumb Tinies. I talked to Clare a bit about your poems and book. She said getting them self published by Amazon's publishing company is easy. Then I forgot to get her to write down the details. But I think if you go on Amazon's website and hunt around, you'll find info on self publishing. I've seen the info many times. Clare was interested in the illustration idea, and I want to talk to her more about it. She's deep in a job right now, illustrating software on teaching children to read, and the publisher/editor who hired Clare keeps making the work more elaborate and changing things. Clare's stress level is building dealing with this person. Say....this thread is a great place to have private conversations I've noticed. Heehee. Maybe I should post a rose photo. Diane

I have 5 old teas in my no spray garden. I enjoy cutting flowers for the house---otherwise, I would have all Knock Outs. My favorite for cutting is Barronne Henriette de Snoy. Long, strong stems and lasts almost a week if cut early. Mrs. BR Cant does fairly well also if cut early. She blooms constantly. Mrs. Dudly Cross lasts well but bloom is sparce for me. Gen. Galleni lasts well, but is not very pretty. All these do not nod. Francis Dubruil looks like velvet, but has short stems and does not last long. These wonderful teas are so carefree. Some get no blackspot and some get a little but are not bothered by it except F Dubreul.

HI Brissy ...Brass Band it is so pretty, lasts for ages, did not get fried with those hot westerly winds we had. And seduction its just so beautiful always buds and flowers on it at different stages. I agree with mauve/purple out doors anyway, two days if I am lucky with my Charles de gaulle. But put it in a vase and I get about a week out of it...Cheers..MM.

Yes, Diane, I must concede that Ulrich Brunner Fils is "red" in the broadest sense of the word. HMF says deep pink or cerise. "Cerise" sounds good to me. Whatever it is, it shines like a beacon across the yard; it's not one of those dusky reds, for sure. Many years, he will reach 7' here, despite being pruned back to 3.5 - 4' in winter.
