Premature leaf fall, black spots, yellowing leaves

Hi there,

I'm not even sure what kind of tree this is - apologies for the naivete of this question, but what could be causing this early summer leaf fall? Its been going on for a month now, the tree will look dead in 2 weeks.

Any help would be appreciated.

Looks like the prunus serotina (don't know if that is what your tree is or not, looks similar) around here this time of year.

By any chance, has it been unseasonably hot and dry there? Any other trees, whether the same species or not, showing similar conditions or browning leaves?

ignore it ..

its seasonal .. its endemic.. and you surely are not going to be able to do anything about it on a tree that size.. other than get rid of the tree ..

reminds me of what i call fire blight on cra-bapple ... or apple ... but google tells me that though i know it as such.. its something else .. lol ... whatever..

Hi Rose, its quite possible too much water. Here near chicago its been warm and i notice lowest leaves are similar as your description. In my case its the water coming out of watering can and or hose hitting the lowest leaves each day sometimes resting on top of soil thats doing it for me. Why are my lemons yellowing and falling off prematurely?

As I said, the trees came from the store with half-formed green lemons on it already. I cut all the fruit off of one of the trees, and left maybe 2/3 of the fruit (maybe 10 lemons), on the other one. Both seem very healthy, but the tree that had all original fruit cut off seems to be growing new leaves faster. However, it would be nice if the half-formed fruit on the other tree could finish maturing and I could see some lemons. So, a question I have is, should I keep the fruit that originally came on the tree (I bought it maybe 3 months ago and the fruit has remained, but has not gotten bigger) on the one tree and see what happens, or should I get rid of it?

Hello, thank you so much for all your advice. I really do appreciate it. I am so worried of my Calamondin tree. Yes, i think it is a huge change of environment. Vienna has a crazy weather, it changes every 30 min. And my apartment is on the 6th floor and unfortunately, I do not have a terrace. So I put my calamondin beside my window where most of the sun comming in but it is from North east. I hope she will be fine. I already bought a fertilizer for Citrus and I hope she will be fine. I took all the fruits since they are gone unhealthy and yellow. I hope soon when warm weather comes, she will be much happier. I am happy that the leaves did not fall as much when i cut off all the fruits. Tushaar, you could be right, they spend a lot of energy keeping the fruits. I think it will give my tree a little rest and develop itself here in the environment. But I planted two of its seeds and it have grown very well and happy. I hope that it will be more used to my environment. Thank you once again for all your advice it was such a big help. Cheers and greetings from Vienna!

I tidy up under the plants but mostly so the garden looks tidy. I just read (again) advice about removing all the mulch under and around each plant and replacing it. Might help but that's a big ask if there are lots and lots of roses. With well-established roses which are susceptible to BS it does seem to help to strip the lower foliage within 6 inches of the ground. I used to do that to 50 plus roses. Whew! I have high hopes the newer Kordes varieties that I am about to try will prove more resistant. I need all the help I can get!

Thanks ken_adrian, yes that photo looks like my tree. Seasonal endemic - you mean it'll happens every year to this tree? or just some years??

j0nd03 - yes its been quite hot & dry.. and yes another tree has (nearly) lost all its leaves already.

Ken mentioned what I was getting at. Hot and dry in the middle/end of summer, especially if it is indeed a prunus can cause premature leaf drop. All the prunus serotina around here defoliate before fall if we don't get good rains in July and August.
