Last years garden revisited

This is what it looks like, but after a year in the compost bin.

Since I need room in the compost bin for the upcoming fall clean-up, I figured it was time to start taking out the finished product. I hauled 6 small wheelbarrow loads today and figure I have another 6 or so to do.

It always amazed me how all that plant material - the garden, last years leaves and a years worth of kitchen waste condenses down into such a small volume of compost, but that's how it works. I love the process!

And no, I don't follow what the books say. You know, the proper ratio of green material to brown material and added garden soil and all that. The raw stuff just get dumped into the bins as I get it. I keep it moist and turn it a couple of times during the summer. A year later, it's finished. My two boulevard gardens are the lucky recipients of all of it this year. I can't wait to see how the zinnias do next year.

It looks fantastic Kevin! You have reduced compost to the most basic and easiest ever! I have yet to get a compost bin going, but plan to and will be depending upon this advice, but I will take what you've said to heart. Thanks for sharing!

That is one of the nicest garden pictures I've seen this week. I'm jealous and it makes me feel guilty about my own heap of unturned not-yet-compost.

Many of our medical people have not yet accepted that exposure to many of the poisons sprayed on land that is "conventionally" farmed can cause chronic health problems even though they recognize they can cause acute health problems. Exposure to more then one could cause a symbiotic relationship that is not healthy. That some people are more susceptible to adverse reactions to these poisons is also a known and if that person is exposed to more than one of these potential allergins can cause even larger problems. Unfortunately the only way to find put if a person is suscetible to any substance is to expose them to that substance. While an allergist can, and will, test someone for these types of allergies it will only be done if there is good reason to suspect there is a need. So alaria121 if you are still able to please update us on what, if anything has been found.

ogrose, I plant my heirloom tomatoes where they have afternoon shade - give them fish emulsion and then stand back and watch the miracle tomatoes grow! They are absolutely the most delicious "maters", and most of them produce gigantic fruit. And let me tell you kid - you have never had spaghetti or lasagna until you've tasted it made with Brandywine tomatoes to make the sauces. OMG! :) In the photo below: Mortgage Lifter heirloom tomato in my hand and Red Brandywines and more M.L.s in the bowl. I have heard so many people state that the heirlooms take too long to make fruit and don't make a lot of fruit. My heirloom tomatoes put on fruit about the same time as all the other tomatoes and start to ripen around the middle of June...not really much later than the hybrids. The only tomato that produces earlier is Early Girl. But when the determinate hybrids kick the bucket, the indeterminate heirlooms will keep on making fruit, as long as the daytime temps don't exceed 98 degrees, that is. Then all tomatoes will all just sit there and sulk. Humph! As for quantity - well, consider that they make LARGE freaking tomatoes! Each plant may have four or five tomatoes ripening, vs. the hybrid which may have 6-10. But, they are two or three times bigger tomatoes! You are getting the same amount of fruit per pound. And the flavor...out of this world. I like to grow many varieties because it gives me a wider choice of tomato flavors, but it also extends my tomato production on into the Fall. Anyway... I can't wait! Fried Green Tomatoes, Tomatoes and okra, Tomatoes with Macaroni, Lasagna, Spaghetti, BLTs, Hamburgers, On pizza, and in eggy, cheesy Quiche (yummy), I love sliced Tomatoes Marinated with fresh Basil in a mixture of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, splash of water, salt & black pepper, and a touch of sugar. Serve with warm Italian bread and a good red wine. Heaven.....pure heaven!

How do I move my rooted cuttings from last year into the garden?

You will have to harden them off and get them used to the UV light. That takes at least a week. If the weather is fine set them outside in a shady place. The north side of your house is fine. The next day move them to a place with dappled shade--like under a tree or where they have morning sun and are shaded the rest of the day. Every day move them a little more into the sun until they are in the sun all day. Then you can plant them

Making compost is work. There's no getting around that. A few times a year, I pitch-fork out all the material inside and pitch-fork it back in. Trust me, that stuff is heavy and not a pleasant task on a hot and humid July day, but you have to do it.

Karin - I have three bins. Here they are with a few comments. Least favorite first.

This one is as close to worthless as you can get. It's too small, the walls are too thin and all the air vents make it almost impossible to keep the contents moist. I think I got this one from Gardeners Supply or someplace similar.

This one is a lot better. It's larger, the walls are thicker, not as many air vents. However, one kind of annoying feature are these little doors on the bottom sides. They keep falling off and I never use them. Contrary to what a lot of ads say, you don't shovel the finished product out these bottom doors. It just doesn't work that way. This is by Toro.

By far, my absolute favorite is this one by Rubbermaid. I simply adore it because it works. It's very large, the walls are thick so they really keep the heat in. There are NO air vents and no little doors on the bottom. It took about a minute to put the whole thing together. Very simple and material inside starts to decompose very quickly. I would like to get another one of these, but I don't know if they still make them.

Very nice Kevin! Your bins, despite some of their problems, make compost fairly quickly, it seems. I don't manage mine closely enough - keep throwing stuff in when I really should let what's already in there cook and start a new one.

It's very satisfying when you get a great batch of compost. Congrats!
