Sick Mulberry Tree

This is my first summer in this home. I have several mulberry trees on the property and all are fine except the one pictured. I think it is a fruiting mulberry tree as all the others are fruiting (with the exception of one). I don't know what the tree looked like last year. I've had many mulberry trees in the past and they have always seemed to be hardy trees. Any ideas about what could be wrong with this one? Should I just have it taken out?

how close are those power lines..

is the field behind indicative of drought???

i am getting a real hate on for the mulberry on my property .. and but for the kids enjoying them.. i would be done with all those weed trees ...

is there some reason you have to have them??? one would think there might be dozens.. if not hundreds of options.. other than a tree that makes birds poop purple.. and for some reason.. will fly all the way out front to your driveway.. to do it all over your car ... whats that all about ...

drought??? .. more specifically.. last year????

No drought. In fact the tree is planted in a lawn and gets plenty of water...I just bought the house and the trees were planted long ago. I agree these fruiting trees are pests along with the several liquidambers which drop their little hard balls and I may just have this sick tree removed.

Any tree can be kept to a reasonable size if you are willing to prune it. Keep in mind, you also need to do root pruning occasionally. If you are willing to do this I would recommend buying the best tasting mulberry you can find, not necessarily one that is a dwarf. I have heard that the Persian variety is the best, but this is not from personal experience. Mulberries will fruit relatively prolifically when they are of a small size. My three foot tall Pakistan mulberry has about 25-30 fruits ripening this year. Hope this helps. -Brett

Hey, I just planted a White and a Pakistani about a week ago. I quite fancy the crown and leaves of a well-grown northern catalpa. Of course, depending on where I am and what kind of tree grouping I'm looking at, this can go in multiple directions. As far as seeking relief among trees on a hot day, nothing cools and refreshes like a grove of native Thuja occidentalis, or northern white cedar. I believe they may transpire larger than average amounts of water into the surrounding atmosphere, and this of course, has a directly cooling property.

Hi ruth_mi, I propagated mine only in warm seasons. In summer, normally I just add moist garden soil (mixed with natural compost soil if you can) in a transparent plastic pot with drains. The cutting must be 4 to 6 inches long, which is usually sufficient then slice off the bottom of the cutting on an angle. Longer cuttings sometimes dry out when placed deep inside the soil. Now poked 2 inches deep inside the soil, the soil should be slightly moist but not wet. I have water mine only the first 2 days. I placed them indoor near the window for indirect sunlight. If you don't have a warm season, you can simply put a heating pad. It'll usually root well in 3 months. Before transplanting outside in direct sunlight, make sure you have many dark colored leaves no young ones. This is a proof that you have strong roots. Also water 3 times daily for the first 2 weeks after transplanting, this will prevent shock (remember this is not overwatering since the roots will get thirsty and will need water for energy!) Here it's my first experiment and turned out surprisingly excellent. I have accidentally broken a branch from my own Mulberry tree, I just slice off the bit to an angle shaped and poked it directly into my garden soil in a shade area. After 2 months I noticed many leaves and I can also feel the roots in the soil. No need to transplant, it's in a very nice area ❤️ (the 2 attached photos)

==>> no BROWN LAWN.. IS GETTING ENOUGH WATER .. and if it is brown.. that tells us.. it is dry below the grass level .. where the trees roots are ...

dig a 2 foot deep hole ... and FIND OUT.. what moisture there is.. where the tree has its roots ..

i fear.. you are making presumptions ... that MAY NOT BE true ... [surely i might be wrong also.. lol]

what about the power lines .. my mulberry is twice the size of that one...

You are right...it is dry in the root area. I have placed a hose at the tree and am letting it run to thoroughly water the root area. I hope I have not let it get too dry for too long. The tree is not infringing upon the power lines. Thank you for your input.
