Does this plant sound familiar to you?

At my cousin's house yesterday following her funeral, I saw some lovely flowers in full bloom. I didn't recognize them at all, and it seemed unusual to see pink flowers in their prime at this time of year. I'm hoping someone will recognize the flower from my description.

The leaves were at the base. Large leaves--I wish I had looked closer so I could describe their shape, but it seems to me they somewhat resembled hollyhock leaves. The leaves made a mound no more than a foot or so high, I'm guessing. Then a tall stem, maybe two feet or more, topped with a bunch of pink flowers that looked a bit like cosmos.

I realize it would be a lot easier if you had a picture, but thanks for your help!

It's a fig! Exact leaf shape and texture don't conform to any standard and are quite variable, especially with seedlings. I've seen that much variation on a single plant. The side views clinched it for me, since the stem, the petioles, and the new bud all have the fig gestalt. The major difference between fig and mulberry is size: fig has bigger, thicker growth all around. New mulberry leaves have two upward pointing bracts where the petiole connects to the stem.

Once mine finished flowering, I left the stalk up to let it go to seed. In about early November, I cut down the stalk and the plant itself came back along with its millions of children!! I let it bloom for a second summer and then we moved. The new owners of my old home have landscaped the property to within an inch of its life and no plant that looks even vaguely like a cottage plant is allowed to show its face there. I wonder if they still do battle with the babies??? My current garden is much smaller and I would never grow a verbascum here. It is a mighty impressive plant, isn't it?

Joellen, That is a nice one! But the price kind of took my breath away. It's half what I paid for my big compost tumbler out back. It certainly is nicer looking than my plastic container though. I've seen some at TJ Maxx and may have to look there again next time I'm over that way, which may be soon since TJ Maxx is my guilty pleasure :). Dawn, I spent a while trying to figure out what IPM stood for and never even got close. That's interesting. BG (before gardening) I'd have never understood why IPM was even necessary, lol. And speaking of pests, a couple of times lately I've seen a little cluster of white eggs about the size of a small pea on leaves. Does that sound familiar, and if so, are they eggs of good bugs or bad bugs? I don't know what to leave and what to remove, and don't want to automatically remove everything since some are beneficial. Suzie

Money plant (lunaria) is a biennial hardy to at least Z4. Seeds should be planted in spring to summer, it will come up easily and form a small plant which will stay green over the winter. The following spring it will get quite large and bloom, colors range from white to purple, with some pink and lavendar occasionally. It is one of the first plants to bloom in spring here in Z6, the bees love it! After it finishes blooming, it sets round green seed pods which ripen to grayish paper pods. The outer coatings of the pods peel off easily releasing the black/brown seeds, and the inner membranes, or "money" on the stalks can be used in dried boquets. Seeds should be planted immediately as they will form the first-year young plants. If you do nothing, the plants will reseed prolifically and can be pulled out when they begin to look tatty. Once they bloom and reseed, the mature plants die. They are NOT perennial. Broken limbs will not root. Once they are mature, they won't transplant anymore. Only young, immature seedlings are easily moved. They do form a taproot, so be careful not to break it off when transplanting. As they get older, they resent transplanting. Since they grow so easily from seed, it is best to plant them directly into the soil where you want them to grow. I never "plant" them, just scatter the seed and lightly rake it in. I think they need light to germinate. They do equally well in sun or filtered shade in average soil. They don't like a spot that stays wet, but will survive in dry soil.

Susan, so sorry for your loss. My condolences to you.

I have tried several times to get anemones established. They are such a nice spot of color in the fall, but I seem to have trouble with them, although I was able to get some established at a friend's house. Funny, many people say they are invasive, and I can't get them started.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
I have a very pretty anemone called 'Montrose'. I love it. I was just looking at how I have to dig some out next spring. It is a slower spreader for me than some mention, but I have mine where it isn't too fertile or over watered. Anyway, it has spread out of it's allotted area and I have to dig. If you are interested in it, come spring, let me know. I would be happy to send it to you, or if you would prefer a swap, we could do that.

Remy, what a nice offerÂthank you! My cousin, Terry, lived in NYS, too, although not as far north as you. I was thinking I would see what has transpired between now and next spring, and if the timing seems right at that time, I would ask about digging a few plants from Terry's garden. If that doesn't work out, though, I'll be in touch.

That's a beautiful picture. So are your rose photos. And I enjoyed your poetry. I will write a poem about my cousin, but not just yet.

I'm glad you enjoyed the photos and poems. I understand what you mean about waiting to write. It took a long time of words floating in my head before I could write 'Farewell'(and I still think it sounds a bit bizarre,) and there are still many not put to paper yet.
Please do remember to contact me if you can not get to her's. I think she would be very happy to know you are growing some anemones because of her. : )

I'm sorry for your loss, too. You and Terry look like you could be sisters in that photo. Are your moms sisters?

Hi Remy and others,
I just planted an Anemone called September Charm. I've never grown them, and I don't usually plant full grown blooming plants, so hopefully this will come back in the spring. I chose one with buds, rather than one that had open flowers, though.

This pic was taken a couple days after planting. More are open now. It's fun to see different varieties of plants.

Remy, I think you're right.

Sue, that is a indeed charming plant. Yes, we're the daughters of sisters. I always wanted a sister (and a brother, too), so I loved the fact that we looked somewhat alike and had a lot of interests in common. We inherited some domestic and creative talents from our mothers, but in different quantities. :-) Terry was a much better gardener than I.

Funny, the physical resemblance waited a while to show up. In my youth, I strongly resembled my dad. Everyone said how striking it was. Then in my fifties I began to notice that I was starting to look like my mother's side of the family, in particular Terry's mother. Anyway, I enjoyed people mistaking us for sisters when we were together.
