Stunted Roses on New D.A Tradescant?

I finally have my first roses on my new (young) Tradescant bush.

They look like the blooms on knockout roses.. stunted and not as rich, deep red, no where near like the pix of all the Tradescant I have seen.

I am brand new to roses.. only in my 2nd year and only two roses in the ground so far (this is one of them.. the other is a 2 year old Abraham Darby).

I don't remember the Abraham Darby having stunted blooms but they are certainly larger this year and that plant is easily 7 feet tall in just 2 years!) so I wonder if this can be normal to have stunted flowers if it is a new young bush?

The foliage looks VERY healthy and lush and GREEN and it's growing fast with all the rain and sun we are having in our rainy season..

Buds are in clusters of 5-7 on the ends of the canes.

Is this normal for young bushes? I was SO excited about my new buds!

Sure, young plants often bear smaller than normal flowers.

Oh thanks so much Kim. Since maybe being in pots has stimulated growth, I won't be so worried that they are going to take over the world. And just today I decided that my front lawn MAY be a good place for two climbers. On a split rail fence next to the driveway. The backdrop will be 2 Forty foot tall pines. (They don't block the sun.) Maybe Golden Celebration and Tradescant will be a treat for the neighbors. They can't see my backyard with the rest of my roses. I hope to be posting photos soon of my spring flush. Hi UncleHippy Welcome to GW and there'll always be plenty of opinions for you to pick from in our responses here. In many cases, you have to decide between easy roses and highly fragrant roses, particularly if you like the "classic" rose shape (those are hybrid tea roses). Since you're asking about Knockout and EE roses, you know that these are more open flower shapes and indeed good for beginners. They should both be fine in the amount of sun you describe and equally easy to grow. In terms of impressiveness, I'd go with Kashmir. It has been thickly covered in blooms in a partly sunny spot in my yard, much better than my Double Knockout. Know that neither of these is consistently a "fire engine" red color - red as a gardening color varies a lot, and both of these tend toward the crimson side of the color scheme, though much redder than roses that are called hot pink. I agree with Rick (predfern) that your best chance for easy roses that have some fragrance are the David Austin roses. There are some drop-dead gorgeous "red" Austins that tend toward the purple side of things - Munstead Wood, Darcey Bussell, and The Prince are all easy and compact good bloomers for me. The Austins that tend more like red (but none are remotely fire engine red) like Tess of the D'Ubervilles or maybe Tradescant are less frequent bloomers for me than the ones I listed in the purple range. The hardiness of Austins is good for most zone 5 regions, but it can vary depending on the part of the country you're in - the east coast gets more trouble with blackspot that can weaken a rose if severe, and that might lead you toward roses like Kashmir more often. If you let us know the general region where you live we can help more with that. One compromise that you could consider about easy vs. fragrant roses is to plant low plants of frequent bloomers (like Kashmir) and then put a few more fragrant but stingier ones behind them (or between) so you get your hit of fragrance that way. It depends on how much room you have. Bottom line though is not to be scared of planting roses and don't let people tell you they need fancy care or expensive food or spraying if you don't want it. The roses you describe should be tough for a zone 5 winter and not need much care, though every rose needs dead wood cut out of it and some trimming at least once a year (nothing including perennials and grass is "no-care" in a garden). Jess: The ideal time to prune roses is when they go dormant, at the COLDEST time of the year. I prune roses right after a hard frost which zaps out the leaves. Then I prune roses again in spring time, since we have more dead branches from -20 below zero. Crown Princess Magareta got pruned twice, right before winter, and again in spring before the rain hit. My second pruning produce more blooms. I checked on multiflora rootstock: 1) yes, it likes acidic, and my Comte de Chambord (grafted on multiflora) loves sulfate of potash (21% sulfur), gypsum .. but hate pea-gravel (pH 9). It loves tons of acidic rain, so I run the down-pour from my rain-spout via a hose onto that rose. Salty fertilizer isn't best for roses grafted on multiflora. Multiflora picks up salt well, thus more prone to rust. Multiflora prefers cool & rainy like the climate they are native to: Japan, Korea and Eastern China. They are imported to cool & rainy eastern United States in 1866 as rootstock for ornamental roses, and became invasive. I notice that my 2 own-root Comte de Chambord can take heat & drought much better than my Comte grafted on Multiflora: it sulks at temp above 90, and can't handle dryness.

Khalid: Thank you for those nice pics. & I'm impressed at how large and healthy the leaves are. Your Chartreuse de Parme is beautiful, same with Belle E. Own-root roses are much smaller than grafted, and my cold-zone makes roses 1/2 the size of warm-zone. So I have to go with REALL BIG roses if I want own-root in a cold-zone. Some of the wimpy own-roots like Love Song, Bishop Castle, Jude the Obscure are sold for $40 each at Heirloom roses since it takes longer for them to root. The problem with our winter & growing indoor: STERILE potting soil is used, that doesn't have mycorrhyzal fungi for fast root-growth. Rooting OUTDOOR with fast-drainage & loamy soil plus mycorrhyzal fungi resulted in THICKER roots for me. But I have to mix that in a month is advance. If you click on the below link, you'll see how Jobes' fertilizer NPK 3-5-3 (with bacteria & fungi) makes a big difference in Julia Child's flowering. I like home-made compost better than store-bought-compost (mostly cow-manure with antibiotics, salt, and that nasty quick-lime added to deodorize).

It is not unusal for some flowers to be crippled - stunted during the first flush - especially not when the plant is young. And it seems to affect many fully double dark red roses - of any class Hybrid teas - Hybrid Perpetuals and the dark Red Austins - the most - some flowers - especially during the first flush - are crippled - stunted - bullheaded - and just quickly remowe them - and hope that later flowers - looks much better. In your climate the flowers may look best during late fall - early spring - I saw a Tradescant I Sacramento, CA - And my heart be still!!

Oh! thanks for the info. I will make sure to pinch off the flowers as soon as it's apparent they are going to be stunted. The plant looks so healthy! I know it's going to be beautiful. I am drunk with love for my one D.A. Abraham Darby! It's so beautiful and is blooming well only on it's second year.

In Florida the hot summers often cause the blooms to have less petals, smaller blooms, and lighter colors. Wait until the winter.It don't happen to all roses, but to a good many of them it does. I am happy to hear about your rose's healthy lush foliage. I was thinking about getting Tradescant myself.

Well really can you just tell me one you have that is doing fantastic!? Oh and BTW, I grew up in St. Pete.

I have the Tradescant in a place (along the side of my house) where it gets sun from early AM until approx. 2pm and then shade.. I also have Abraham Darby in the same place (a year older) and they both have beautiful foliage and the A.D. is blooming very well.

I ALSO have a Golden Celebration in a large pot in the same area and the foliage looks great but only one bloom so far (not even a year old for me yet).. it's going in the ground soon. Lastly I have a Glamis Castle in a pot and it loves it.. it is on it's second year and is covered in blooms and seems to like it so much in the pot I am keeping it there for now..

I *had* Tradescant and mine did this constantly over its 4yr life. Most often in the spring but usually had a mix of 'proper' and single flowers the rest of the season. Never figured out why it did this because it was big, beautiful and healthy in every other way. And when the flowers got it right, they were awesome. Mine was own root from Chamblees. I finally got sick of its fits and shovelled it this year. That and its octopus canes. Oh well.
