How Soon is too soon..?

I plan on planting a row of "Vibrant" (Harris) Azaleas ASAP. My question would be how soon would it be OK to do so? I currently have a row of old ugly bushes with Poison ivy mixed in. When I bought the property last year I started working on killing off the Poison ivy and with the winter finishing it off for me I want to get a jump on it early and remove the bushes. Once they are gone I have 20 or so pounds of used coffee grounds from my local Dunkin Donuts I am going to spread on the bed and then rototill it in. After planting them my final step would be to give the bed a cover of Mulch to help keep any Poison ivy from tiring to return. My questions are... does my plan sound like a good one? How soon can I start this.

It is best to kill the poison ivy before planting. It is very resilient. Winter will not kill it. It has burried rhizomes that will run all over the place. They need to be starved. This can be done by poisoning any green shoots with roundup, or cutting off any new green growth. It will grow right through mulch.

Regarding the azaleas, you can plant them any time the ground is not frozen. If they come from a greenhouse or warmer climate where they have broken dormancy, then you must wait until after the last chance of frost.

I was hoping someone with more poison ivy experience would answer you - apparently it doesn't thrive in rainforest conditions, I've never seen it :)

I might just add that azaleas do best in soil that is very high in organic content (compost). You don't say what type soil you have, but if creating a new bed you'd have the perfect opportunity to work more into your soil. The coffee grounds are a good start, other components are available by the bag if you haven't made your own compost. i.e. the composted steer manure from Home Depot @ $1 per bag has been weed free and decomposed to the point of being odorless, seems to have an amount of well broken down wood chips in it too.

Once you've taken care of the poison ivy, if you do rototill, you might think about planting high to allow for settling of your 'fluffed up' soil....

This is a picky matter of semantics, but one would more properly refer to "pinching" seedlings as opposed to "pruning" them. I have a vision of you approaching a flat of little seedlings, lopper and pruning saw in hand... LOL Lillies4supper, we could help you better if you would tell us what seedling plants you are growing. There are a number of plants that benefit from pinching back to a set of leaf nodes. The purpose of pinching is to encourage additional side shoots to grow; for annual flowers, this will produce a more floriferous plant, a definite plus! I also regularly pinch back my seedling herbs since I want lots of foliage. If your seedlings are leggy due to too little light (as gcreek suggests may be the case), depending on the plant, a bit of pinching may be in order, too. Some plants may be pinched earlier than others; some need to grow more. A plant with but 5 leaves may or may not do well; again, if you tell us what the plants are, we may be able to guide you better. I have never left the seedlings in water long enough to develop a leaf, probably because I never understand the benefits of waiting for a leaf. An important point about seedlings is that they seem to be extremely forgiving, so it probably does not matter what you do. Despite what is true about larger bulbs, seedlings seem very tolerant of flooded conditions, so they appear content to sit in water for a while. In fact before I knew anything about Hippies, I once had a batch of seedlings growing in a pot that had no drainage holes. I left it outside all summer, and on occasion I would lie it on its side to drain the water out. After rain, sometimes there would be standing water above the soil level for several days before I would get around to draining it. The seedlings thrived despite the neglect and were quite robust by the end of the summer. If these had been adult bulbs, I probably would have lost them all to rot. I don't recommend this as a way to grow seedlings, but just want to emphasize how forgiving seedlings are. Also, once potted in soil, initially it is probably better to err on the side of overwatering rather than underwatering. So plant the seedlings whenever it is convenient. I cannot attest to the ease of planting after developing a leaf, but I can't imagine anything being much easier than planting them when the root is still quite short. I just lay them on the soil, making certain that the root is inserted into the soil. Depending on the length of the root, it may be necessary to make a cut or hole in the soil to avoid breaking the root. Then I sprinkle perhaps 1/4 inch of soil on top. The reason I pot them up early is that it seems logical to get the root in contact with the soil as soon as possible so that it can begin taking up nutrients to sustain more growth. And I worry that I could easily break a longer root when planting. And finally, roots that develop underwater are anatomically and physiologically different than those that develop in soil, and may perform less well when later exposed to drier conditions. This is often a problem when cuttings of other house plants are rooted in water, and they can experience substantial shock when transplanted into soil. But these are all "theoretical" arguments that clearly must not matter much for hippeastrum, based on the experience of others. Mark, I can answer a few of your questions and I am attaching OSU Fall Garden Guide to help you with the planting times. The garden guide will work in reverse for the fall with those in the northern part of the state using the early date and those in the south the later one, which is just the opposite of what we do with the Spring Guide. I am attaching the guide because I do not have experience with growing peas in the fall. They are one of my favorite Spring crops but this year we got beat out of a couple of weeks of production by the weather. For that reason, I thought I might try to grow a few in the fall also. Your son has good taste in food if he eats peas by the bag. You will get a kick out of Diane's blog to see the result of Josie discovering that the peas were gone. It is called "The End of the World" and this is the link. http://agweb.okstate.edu/fourh/aitc/lessons/extras/facts/fallgarden.pdf Question 1 Yes, it's too late, and it's also too early, so just gather up your seeds and wait. Question 2 Since I don't know where you are, I can't answer that one, but you should be able to make a decision by using the OSU guide. I normally direct seed my peas but everything loves a sprouting pea so if you have a heavy wildlife problem, especially squirrels, you might want to think about that one. Leaves are edible, but the birds and squirrels seem to be most interested in the sprouted seed. 3. No predators for mine except the ones described in 2 above. Wind is an enemy tho, so make sure they are secured to something. 4. I plant peas and beans in regular garden soil, but I do add compost at planting time, but nothing after that. Peas are like beans and I would think if they needed anything extra it would be an innoculant made especially for peas. I never see that in stores but if you order your seeds a lot of the on-line companies have it. 5. I guess the answer is yes and no. I wouldn't call any that I have grown bush, but there are some shorter ones available. They all like to climb but they are relunctant to cling to anything other than another pea vine so you have to give them a little help. I will list what I grew this year: Mamouth Melting Sugar - These grew about two and half to three feet tall and I grew them on a chain link fence. The taste was OK but they are better picked young, in the flat pod stage. So while these are great for adding to a wok of stir fry, they were not my favorite for eating out of hand. Cascadia - These grew to about 3 feet high on teepees. I had some soft plastic tripod caps from Lee Valley Tools and I fed three pieces of 3/8 inch rebar into the openings and pushed the other end into the ground, then wound string around from rebar to rebar. They were very sturdy and worked out OK as long as I made sure the peas were secured by the string. The taste of this pea was very good, put I had to pick it right on time or the pod starting to separate from the peas. This didn't seem hurt the taste and as long as the pea was used whole wouldn't be much of an issue. Sugar Snap - I normally grow Sugar Snap only, but this year I was glad I had other choices because it didn't produce as well as it has in other years. This is a great tasting pea but I discovered by growing others along with it that I had been eating peas for over a week before this one started producing. This will grow to 5-6 feet tall and needs a good place to climb. Super Sugar Snap - This was the best pea I grew this year. It was productive and the taste was wonderful. I grew it on a cattle panel and weaved it through as it grew and sometimes added a small garden clip to make sure it would not blow over in the wind. I'm just really partial to vegetables that I can pick standing up and I feel that since growing upward gives more vine to produce on, yet still uses the same footprint in the valuable garden space below, that tall plants are the way to go. Fraid you've got me confused with someone else re building a barn on the property and living in that while building the house. DH and I bought our land by refinancing the house we then owned in order to pay cash for the land b/c mortgage interest rates on the refinance were MUCH lower than interest rates on a raw land mortgage. We then spent five years paying down the refinanced mortgage before felt financially ready to start building. We finished paying off our mortgage on the first house while we were in the process of building the second. So even tho we weren't able to sell our first house as quickly as we would have liked after moving into the new dream home, we never had to worry about making two mortgage payments at the same time. I was terribly impatient during that entire five years to just "get started" but in fact, the wait gave me plenty of time to educate myself and to design a home that FITS our property and our lifestyle. So, IMHO, you can't start too soon. Yes, prices will change but the relative cost to build various houses will stay about the same. (i.e., if the build price on plan A is twice the build price of plan B today, five years from now, plan A is still going to cost about twice as much to build as plan B.) Instead of obsessing about costs tho, use your time to learn all you can about the pros/cons of various building practices. For example, while it isn't exciting, spend some time learning about various types of foundations and how each type is PROPERLY INSTALLED as well as all the ways a particular type of foundation can be screwed up by someone who doesn't know what they're doing. Then when you're choosing a house plan, you can make an informed decision about what type of foundation you want. Ditto with framing. Learn as much as you can about how a house is framed up and some of the options you have. Terms like "open web joists," "i-beam joists," "California corners," "sole plate," "king stud," "cripple/jack stud," "ridge pole," "purlin," and "load bearing" should become familiar to you as you learn how framing should be done right and all the ways that bad builders can screw it up. Likewise, get a thorough grasp of the concept of "drainage planes" and how flashing, house wraps, claddings, etc. SHOULD be installed in order to contribute to properly functioning drainage planes. Basically, work your way thru every "system" within a house. The more you understand about how a properly designed and built house WORKS, the better off you'll be when dealing with a builder. Or, for that matter, when trying to communicate with your architect. And, of course spend time doing the fun stuff like thinking about how you and your family actually live. What in your current home makes your life easier and what are the little things that just drive you bonkers. Like maybe, you actually love having the sun wake you up in the mornings thru your east facing windows but hate the way everything always seems to wind up stacked on the dining room table b/c there isn't really any other place to drop stuff off as you come in the door. Or you love your big kitchen island but hate the the way your top kitchen drawers are half-an-inch too shallow to hold rolls of waxed paper and tinfoil. Make notes about these things and, when you're designing your new home, incorporate the good things and find ways to fix the annoying things. And of course, spend time finding and saving "inspiration" pictures for the really fun part which is decorating that brand new space! Three years will fly by!

Hi Morz8. If you recognize poison oak, you will recognize poison ivy. They look different but enough alike that you will pick it up. Poison ivy will climb trees. If you see an oak tree with a nice crop of white berries, it is poison ivy.

The roots are insidious, each little piece will start a new plant. That is the reason that rototilling doesn't help; it just makes it worse. It is almost as bad as bind weed. You have to either starve it or poison it.

Even the roots are poisonous. I used to pull poison ivy roots out when I planted Christmas trees. Some of the rhizomes went over 10 feet before they hit a plant. Of course I wore gloves and scrubbed and showered and prayed after doing that. Never, never burn it. The smoke will cause an alergic reaction in places you don't want it.

At the end of last season I did use Round Up on it. Also a friend of mine advised me to once it looked brownish to take a razor and scrape it where I could and also spray it with bleach so it would go down into the roots.. I also did that.. I don't think it will come back this year and if it does I'll be on top of it..

Yes if you burn it, It can even be fatal to some. It will go into your lungs and If it turns skin red and causes major discomfort imagine what it will do you lungs.

My other plan may be done simultaneously as the planting of the azalea's. I had a large tree stump in the center of my back yard from a tree that was apparently cut down years ago. The removal of it was one of the first things I did when I bought the house. Reason I mention this is because of it, I don't have a Flat yard. That and the fact that I have I'd say 1/4 of the yard with Zoysia grass and the other 3/4 you can call grass or weeds... What I was going to do with this is take the 1/4 that is Zoysia grass and remove it and 2 inches of ground under it and put it on my deck. (yes I know Keep it moist) then rototill the entire back yard and side yard (where the Azaleas will be)... Once I turn it all over, rent one of them 500 Lbs rollers from local Rental shop and drag it across the yard and flatten it. (Yes, I know slight slop away from house...) Once this is done if my wife hasn't killed me for making the largest mud pit I want to take the Zoysia and make plugs from it and spread them around to cover the back and side yards. Once the plugs are all in, I'll take some regular bluegrass seed and spread it over the rest. then finally cover it all with hay. My hopes are that with in 2 to 4 years to have the full back yard in Zoysia and most importantly Flat.

From what I've read Zoysia likes 20/20/20 does anyone here know where I can get some cheap?

Where are you located? Zoysia is considered a turf grass most suited for southern locations as it has a great deal of heat tolerance and very little cold tolerance. Generally, it doesn't fair very well in any area that gets real winters, which I imagine would include anywhere in zone 6. That might be a good reason why yours is looking so poorly.

And despite what you might have read, no turf grass needs a 20-20-20 fertiizer. Any slow release, high nitrogen lawn fertilizer will do the job handily - the excessive amounts of phosphorus and potassium in a 20-20-20 formulation are not utilized and will just leach into groundwater. Apply at 2# of nitrogen per 1000sf and don't fertilize until May.
