Fan-Tex Ash root problem - Need advice
Comments (5)I made the mistake of building a concrete walkway around both trees and gave them only a 4 feet opening in order to water them. On one of these trees, the concrete starting lifting and it cracked in the middle. My biggest concern is that since my house is about 8 feet away from both trees, I worry that the roots will start growing underneath the foundation and crack it. I think that in order not to worry each time that I see them, I will probably cut them down. Can someone please tell me if I cut the trees down and leave the roots (since the roots are underneath the concrete) will they still spread or once I cut down the tree, the roots will die like the trees? Thanks in advance....See MoreCut root by error while transanting the tree
Comments (3)Next time you're at the nursery, take a look at how much of the root system was removed from balled-and-burlapped trees there. It's not unusual to end up with less than 10% of the original rootball of bare-root and b&b trees. Anytime you transplant a tree, try to keep the rootball intact when moving it, dig a dish shaped hole with the top diameter about two to three times the diameter of the rootball, use little or no amendment in your soil, keep the tree correctly watered (enough water, but not too much), remove competing turf around base of tree, and mulch properly. With proper care, your tree should survive with only a fraction of its original root system....See MoreCan I cut a palm tree and make it produce roots?
Comments (101)My tree-unfriendly neighbour cut today a big trunk of a Washingtonia robusta. I understand from this post that my chances of resprouting it in a pot are small but I think I'll give it a shot. Does anyone know which is the procedure with the root compound as tropicbreezent suggested on another post? Am I supposed to wrap it up somehow? Or perhaps put it in the compost mix? To be honest it's the first time I hear that such thing as root compound even exists....See MoreCutting Juniper tree root during house bldg, bad for tree?
Comments (6)Thank you both. @Ken FYI blue line is 25 inches not 25 feet. There is well. @mike Yes the house will cast quite a bit of shade on tree; latter is to north of house and this part of house will be two stories so the the roof line will come within probably 15 feet of the top of the house. So the micro climate for the tree will be greatly changed - do you think the shade will be an issue? I really don't have much choice on house location. Fortunately Junipers are tough (some in Oregon even think of them as being quite invasive), so hopefully tree will be OK. Since it will be close to house, I'd like to enjoy its sculptural features and am happy if it does NOT thrive - very slow growth would be best. And yes I have visited the wonderful museum....See Moregardener365
