Emperor 400 Filter not working - Help!

I have a 42 gallon w/ an emp. 400 filter. I recently (yesterday) moved the tank across the street to my new home and it isn't working properly! After priming it 100% it pumps for a few seconds only to slowly drain and need priming again. Much to my dismay I've disassembled the filter and checked everything - cleaning out the area around the impeller. I'm at a loss and I need it to work! My fish are in an incredibly dirty tank that needs the help of the bacteria in the filter media. The filter was only out of the tank for about an hour. I've come to the conclusion that it IS pumping - it just doesnt seem to be taking in enough water. I've checked the induction tube for any obstructions. Anything helps. I'm a broke college student so buying a new one isn't possible.

I'm not familiar with that model, but it reminds me of a very expensive Eheim canister filter I had many years ago, and though that was a great filter the first two years or so, the last year I had it , it started having problems. It sounded like the impeller was spinning , but no water movement, and it's only now I think perhaps there was a crack or bad seal somewhere that wouldn't let it prime properly. That's terrible for a very expensive filter, but I was moving about that time and gave it to a friend along with my other aquariums etc. and just hoped he could get it working again. Have you checked all the seals , gaskets, etc, if it's even a canister type. As mentioned I'm not famiiar with that filter!

How old is the unit? The impellers do need to be replaced from time to time, I keep one on hand because it usually happens to me when the stores are closed! Make sure everything is seated properly, even a tiny bit off and the filter will lose it's prime. Also make sure that the blue hickey in the back is pulled up and not on the 'feed' mode.

Gary: I'm pushing 70, but in my mind, I'm still young. When people start thinking old, they start to die and I'm not ready yet. The glass fish tank I had as a child had a painted iron frame with a slate bottom, but all glass ones, usually mounted in wrought iron frames have been around for at a long time. The fanciest I ever saw was in an antique shop in Brighton, England. The proprieter claimed it was early Victorian, which would have put it at somewhere around 1860- ish. It was about 5 ft. high, with a hand blown bowl that fit into upturned arms, with all sorts of elaborate bits of metal and glass embelishments on it; cherubs, fanciful fish, vines, flowers, glass balls, etc. Frankly, I thought it was hideous. But the Victorians did have larger, metal framed glass aquariums and kept the fish alive with continual water changes, which is easy if you have an estate, a conservatory, and an army of servants. Following the Great London Exibition and the Crystal Palace, glass conservatories became all the rage among the monied, landed Brits. My own love affair with small tropicals started in the Balanced Aquarium Room of the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago in the 1940's, when keeping any FW aquarium fish still depended far more on a balance between plants and fish than mechanical filtration and one of the reasons I still strive to affect it. The better balanced the tank, the less dependence on any filter. budcarlson: A survey? Okay, but I honestly don't know that it will help you, because every fish keeper has different likes, dislikes and tanks, as well as their own notions, but for what it's worth.... a) Filter type (duh) Box, sponge, canister, UV. b) Water type (fresh, etc) Fresh c) Gravel/sand/etc It's called substrate, but in my situation, it depends. The baby, grow-out and Q's are all bare, but fairly loaded with live plants in clay pots. I use a lot of low to lower light level types in my black water show tanks, as well as java moss and naja (guppy grass) in the livebearer tanks, as cover for babies and harried fems. I've been experimenting with different substrates in my show tanks. One that's worked well is sand over Flourite, but Gary wrote of using garden soil and I'm finally going to try it in a big stock tank this summer, but it will be outdoors, so if it turns out a muddy mess, I can just stir it up to slurry and use a sewage pump to send it all through a hose to the tomatoes. d) Plants/amount As all of my tanks are Amazon or Asian, all are farily heavily planted, mostly with Cryps and Anubia, but I keep the light fairly high in baby and grow-out tanks and have many wide shallow clay pots of Vals. e) Daily/weekly/monthly/yearly maintenance (filter only) I switch box filters in baby tanks daily, so I can load on the food without fouling the tank. But I don't use loose floss in them. I cut bonded pond filter media to fit the boxes and rinse them clean, getting at least 10 -12 uses from each and it makes changing easier, as does keeping the charcoal and zeno in net bags instead of loose in the filters. But the box filter frames are bleached cleaned after each use, and why I have at least 4 dozen of them. I do them in bulk, weekly. Foam filters may go several days in baby tanks, but are all doubles or quads, which allows me to squeeze half in tank water and the other in fresh, to make sure at least one is always loaded but one very clean, as to draw the most effectively. The plastic housing of the power filters are flushed out at least bi-monthly regardless and washed completely clean as new whenever they accumulate enough gunk to make me think they aren't flowing as well. The sponge pre-filters on power filter intakes are only to trap fines, not for bio-filtration, so are squeezed out in clean water in a bowl with repeated fresh water until it's clear at least bi-monthly. f) Necessary yearly supplies Impossible to make a comparison. I load in frozen foods from F & S once a year during winter, to take advantage of the flat rate shipping. Overwrap a package in foil and seal it into a freezer weight bag and as long as the freezer holds at 0 deg., it will be as good a year later as the day it arrived rock hard via FedEx Overnight. I buy dry food in single ingredient bulk bags from Ken Menard (kenfish.com) and make my own custom mix, with something to appeal to every species I keep. I mix it up in a 20 gal. tub, then pack it into small zip bags, inside larger freezer bags and store it also in the freezer. g) Major long term maintenance issue Keep to a regular maintenence schedule and there aren't any, unless you have a glass tank that suddenly starts leaking and if it does, as long as the glass is intact, resealing one like new is easy- IF you know how, and I do. h) Advantages To what? i) Disadvantages For me, being retired, instead of freezing my ass off in Illinois, messing with fish, I could be in Aruba, eating them fresh caught. j) Realistic monetary investment per year Also impossible to make a comparison. For some, the cost of setting up a 5,000 gal. reef tank is chump change. For others, a 5 gal. Eclipse with a single Betta is their limit. k) Have you ever had a catastrophic filtration system failure, and if you remember or know, why did it happen (and how could it have been prevented). If you had a near-failure, how did you save it? Certainly. That's when I learned the Awful Truth about UG's. It happened because I did everything I was told to do, using powerheads on both uplift's and suctioning the water at changes through them, but in the end, all it took was my getting too sick for a week to do a good change and the gasses trapped under the filter plates exploded and I lost an entire breeding colony of Sterbi. If I ever had a near failure I was unaware of it, because I did something to avert it- probably a water or filter change. Unless the filter quits and you aren't paying enough attention to your tank to even notice it, if you keep the tank clean with regular water changes, a filter break-down alone- CAN'T kill your fish.

I guess the truth will eventually gain over ignorance. Permit me to say, CMH will outperform HPS even in the flowering stage. The blooms will take one or two weeks longer to finish, but the yield and potency will be greater. That is, provided the plant is less than 2.5 feet tall. For tall plants, HPS is better because the spectrum penetrates better (it bounces easier). By the time the plants do not need blue spectrum for growth hormones, they will still need UV-B for potency enhancement. However if you want to customize your spectrum to the exact stage, the best way to do this is with the Pulse-Start Metal Halide. The GE Ultra-Max runs both the CMH and the PSMH; it is the only electronic ballast (I'm aware of) that can run the CMH. Because CMH requires low frequency output from the ballast, whereas almost all electronic ballasts are high frequency. PSMH comes in four different spectrums: 4K for seedling/cutting stage 6.5K for most of the veg stage 4K for the last week of veg 3K for most of the bloom stage 10K for the last week of bloom stage (for potency). Also the last week you can run the light 20 hours/day. That way you get an extra 8 hours/day and one week isn't long enough to revert the plants to veg. There are at least two good brands of 400w CMH: Philips at about $60, and GE at about $100 each. The GE is higher output and almost the same CRI.

When I first purchased the system earlier this year, I new nothing except that the upstairs was 12 degrees hotter than the downstairs when the AC was running. I found some HVAC sites similar to this one and learned how to solve the problem. During that process it was suggested by some seasoned pro's that I have my static pressure checked since it impacts air flow. My first response was "what the hell is static pressure?".... I learned quickly that static pressure can be viewed as "back pressure" on the blower fan. The more "back pressure" the harder the fan has to work to move the air. It is easier to push air through a large pipe versus a small one. Imagine blowing air throug a typical soda pop straw....then imagine trying to blow the same amount of air through one of those small red coffee stirrer staws. It is much harder to get the same amount or air through. If the ducts are grossly too small then the fan can't work hard enough to move the required air. While the fan is trying, it is burning much more electricity than what the salesman sold us on when he said it uses the wattage of a 75 watt light bulb. Also it is hard or the fan motor which could shorten it's life. It is very easy to check static pressure. I own a Dwyer Magnehelic gauge which could be bought off the internet (amazon.com charges ~$100 but it can be had for as low as ~$60). It is a simple gauge that you connect a small rubber tube to....and take measurments while the unit is running. Knowing your static is very useful especially with new HVAC systems because they come with tables that relate airflow, wattage-used, and temp-rise, to static pressure. It helps trouble shoot problemms and pinpoint duct issues. Static pressure issues are independent of the manufacturer. If the system is to large for your ducts then the large blower is going to have to work hard to try and move the air through the too small ducts.... Thank you for your comments suggestions and encouragement. I am posting a few photos this time and it will show what I have used and how I made certain things. Firstly, perhaps I should mention that what happened as I searched deeper into planting in a steep-walled pond (with no sloping, shallow end) was that I found myself reading more about hydroponics and aquaponics. Because of the methods used in these fields, I have been using the sheet polystyrene (rigid sheet foam, or what have you) as you will have noticed in my video. My latest island (oh my, doesn't that sound grand!) is a 4 ft x 8 ft x 2" thick sheet with a 3/4" PVC (schedule 40) frame. For transport reasons I had to by 4 sheets at 2' x 4' and join them to make an 4x8. Having done this I decided that a PVC frame would help keep it together and assist with anchoring/mooring it. Here are a couple of photos: I joined the sheets with Gorilla glue which works very well. I jointed all the PVC with the appropriate glue to keep it airtight because open PVC tubing will sink. I then added some 'lumps' of polystyrene glued together and hacked them about to look like rocks: I angled the edges of the island and painted the sides and top with some exterior household paint I had lying around. Then I painted the rocks with acrylic paint of various reds, blues and browns until they looked natural (!?) Here is a photo or two, what do you think? (The wire is a set of solar night lights) Given that the ground cover in the foreground should later cover the nasty brown of the surface, I think (hope) it should turn out alright. Oh; one other thing I did was to add a sheet of filter material to the underneath to encourage bacteria (I used swamp cooler pads, but in a roll). That is the reason I placed it next to the air stone column, as can be seen in the photo. I originally placed it directly over the air but found that it smothered the air column so effectively that it made the whole of the pond appear to be still, like a mill pond. Clearly I did not want this so I moored it to the side of the column. The air bubbles assist the bacteria and will therefore help clear the water. Most of what you see there, plantwise, is a ground cover but there is also mexican feather grasses and some herbs (sage, parsley, etc). BTW. The photos are in high-def so you should be able to zoom in if you wish. Other updates: The lobelia is getting towards its end but still looks OK. The goldfish continue to grow, and goodness knows how many mosquito fish are in there now. I might have to consider another fish to keep them under control as there is no sign of the goldfish doing this and I am told that they should eat the eggs or small fry. Any suggestions welcome. Overall, the water is starting to clear, possibly thanks to the addition of barley straw and pellets. Petsmart carries parts for various filters. Also you only have a 42 gallon tank, I know you are a student, but why not buy another filter. I like the Hagen Aqua clears. They work with a sponge system, and I think they are much more realiable. Good prices for these are at pet solutions on the internet. www.petsolutions.com. Petsmart here in my town was selling aqua clears for 50% more than pet solutions. Walmart has nice filters for not to much money. You are lucky you only have 42 gallons, so equipment is not too expensive. To get yourself by till you figure this out. Go and buy a sponge filter and attach it to a cheap air pump. Soon you will lose all your good bateria. You need to get to petsmart fast. This is why I usually run more than one filter in my tank. I have been known to run a power filter and a box air driven filter, etc. Always have a backup. There are lots of very cheap backups. Using cheap air pumps as the driving force. The motto to have fish by (it is not if the equipment will fail, but when the equipment will fail).

If you plug it in dry, do you hear the impeller moving?

Also, fill the reservoir up with water to start it.

(This _is_ the type with a biowheel,right?)

my emp400 isn't working either but i think its cause i dont have the tank water all the way to the top.

i'm slowly filling up the tank.
but you would think it would be powerful enough to prime without the tank full.

i hear the impeller, i fill the filter full of water.

Take the motor off the filter body and plug it in, make sure the impeller is spinning well and put it back together while it is running dry, hang it in the tank and add water, after it primes and starts running put in the cartridge. Sometimes you have to do this to get them to start right. I agree the Hagen Aquaclears are more dependable I have a couple that are almost 20 years old, I have replaced a couple of impellers, but the still work. I also like the foam sponges, and the carbon bags they use. I only replace the foam blocks when they get too old and clogged to clean, and I buy empty filter bags and carbon and make my own carbon bags.

The manufacturer says dont run it dry!
This is a pain in the azz. My whisper60 runs alot better!
But I'm going to try what you say.
Put the empty cartride closest to the inside of the tank?
& the carbon bag furthest away?

It will only be running dry as along as it takes you to put it back together, hang it on the tank, and add water, less than a minute if you are familar with how the filter goes together. I think what they really mean is not to leave it running dry for long periods of time, because it will over heat. I've never had a problem doing this, to get one to start, work fast!!!!

To take off the motor its only "unsnap it"?

The intake tubes: do you want these really tight together or
when you assemble, only push them lightly together?

On the surface it looks like emp400 is more powerful & sturdier then the whisp 60...

but on both, if i squeeze too hard, it's going to break very easily.

Some other thoughts (per my experience)

Really look at impeller. I've found almost invisible threads, hairs, ie floss from other filter, imbedded (wrapped) around metal tube (small part where thing is at end).. have to take tweezers and pull it out, more and more comes out.. where did it come from how did it get there but stops thing in its track.

I often (as poster mention) have to take stuffing out(I don't use cartrige (too expeisive) and use my own charcoal so on... fill with water first then start then add stuff. no idea why but gets it going

Also, sometimes tilt it while hanging off back out a little to change input somehow (not sure why but works)I keep adding water from tank with cup to get it going.

(tilt meaning from bottom of filter away from tank) some larger ones have this plastic thing that keeps it out from tank other don't but that tilt makes difference when starting up.

reread instructions, I missed stuff early on and found solutions re cleaning all parts leaks so on.

On one the rubber part (if thinking of same) had gottin tilted so pushed it back into place - not sure how long it will last until breaking down.

Make sure on start up, tank water level is high enough(when going doesn't seem to matter as much) keep adding water until it gets going.

sometims after it just won't work with tank, I take it off (frustrating) and go into bathroom, fill a large metal bowl, fill with water and empty filter water only and see if it runs with motor. does, so go from there, (usually the impeller clogged with threds of something again they get embedded around and around) very hard to see but lots come out once you start pulling. if that's the cause)

I fill with water, and start up. Make sure top part tube pushed in far enough, tilt this way and that. Have to keep water level up high enough and water filled. then suddenly it starts. Then I move back to tank, hang, water in, and start add stuff, stops.. rince repeat...arrgghh!

Go to freecycle.org (type in your state) and sign up and ask for free (all things are free, giving and asking for) for what you need, may find. best Sherry

hmmm, didn't notice here in NYC. Funny I gave away a 75 gallon, then when I posted for help with rescue paccu kept in 10- gallon at pet store (egads!) same person whom I gave 75 applied saying she'd take it... had 600 gallon, so took three days to transfer fish from local pet store to me to her (gently).... all in all a Kharma sort of thing... You give you recieve, lol... I was greatful, no one else responded! The fish now is one happy camper... Best Sherry

I just got my pump working on Eclipse Six system. Soaked the impeller in vinegar to dissolve gunk, then rinsed. Also put some plastic around bottom of impeller housing to make a better seal. Thanks for your suggestions!
