So how is your amazing garden in mid-summer? What roses, and other plants, are strutting their stuff in late July?

Regina, We are having one of the best Julys ever. The weather has been idyllic. The roses are happy with all rebloomers doing well. July is when the hydrangeas bloom. The shade garden comes alive with magic. There are also fabulous lillies that scent the entire area that they are growing in morning and dusk. Hollyhocks have been beautiful too.

Mendocino- that is absolutely amazing! I have never seen a garden anything like that! I love your statue, too. Brandy

Michael, I'm constantly looking at the Rose Gallery but the majority of pictures are of single roses, either modern or antique, and not very many on rose gardens. Also, many of the older postings no longer have pictures with them.

Mendocino rose, your garden is stupendous; thank you so much for the beautiful pictures. It's difficult to believe the astounding quantity of blooms, especially at this time of the year. I'll certainly look for the book you suggested; I have about 20 books on old roses and English gardens, but perhaps what I need is a professional garden designer who knows and loves old roses.

robiniaquest, thank you very much! Oh boy, I really do not know the name of the hydrangea, but I will tell you that it blooms for about a week or so, no more. It's really bright for a week, then it fades rapidly.

tivoli_rose, I'm awed by your photography and the lovely plants you have in your garden. They all look absolutely perfect.

hoovb, I LOVED your garden, with such an awesome house set in the middle of it. I wonder at the amount of work you must do to have it in such pristine condition. The composition and design of the garden are wonderful.

I was also able to find pictures of Jon's garden in Wessex and Maurizio's garden in Sardinia. I believe Shah Jahan's words when he first visited Kashmir in northern India are appropriate: "If there is a paradise on earth, it is here, it is here, it is here".

The longer I am on this forum and read past threads the more I've come to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of your individual voices. There is so much caring, intelligence and knowledge here.

Here is a link to some photos that I took at my friend's garden in Westchester (near LAX) earlier this year. Her garden was featured in the Westchester/Playa Del Rey garden tour.
The roses were not yet in bloom, so are not that apparent, but she does have quite a few roses tucked in amongst all the other plants, especially in the back beds.

I used to live in the same neighborhood, and this friend helped me design my backyard when I lived in SoCal. Have some photos from that garden, but don't have them loaded to the net.

If you like hardscape, I must admit Janelle's friend has a very nice backyard, but I must also confess I could do with a lot less hardscape myself and more rose beds and even some grassy paths. But that's me--to each his/her own, right? !!!!!
