Worried about brown leaves on new tulip tree

Hello, gardeners.

I wonder if you could help me--two years ago we had a little tulip tree cutting that was growing quite nicely, but after two years it got brown leaves, and the next fall it didn't bud at all. My husband wondered if some of his charcoal got into the soil and somehow killed it.

This year we bought a new, larger tulip tree, and it's been thriving since we planted it in May. Now I'm worried because I see the same browning of the leaves. It has been very hot for three days, and I've been concerned about watering it for fear that I would give it sunburn. It's rained a lot in the last two weeks, so I wasn't sure if I needed to water the tree every day anyway.

I have pictures, but I don't see a way to post them here.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
