Question about Souvenir de Mme Drama Queen
Comments (13)Niels, I've been growing this lovely rose for slightly less than 10 years and I'm afraid that might disqualify me, but I hope you'll overlook this minor defect. She's reputed to be a sport from Mlle. Hedda Kledderstump, although this has been hotly (and in my estimation) wrongly disputed from a usually knowledgeable rosarian from Blsk. I think the coloration is somewhat misleading in his frigid climate zone. I don't belong to a royal rose society (the only royalty we have here is Her Serene Highness Courtney Love and Princess-in-Waiting Lindsey Lohan). However, I do boast of a Ph of 20,000 and am eagerly waiting to hear from the Guiness Book of Soil Records. I believe I've got that category sewed up. I do want to point out that michaelg's little article in Trailer Trash has been shamelessly borrowed from my work "The Alliterative Insinuations of Spurious Allegations Regarding Splash O'Sunshine's Purported Transmorgification of SdmDQ. It's a feeble effort on his part but I'm afraid some less astute rosarions may be taken in by his cleverly worded ruse. I hope I've cleared up any little misconceptions that may have crept into the TRUE origns of said rose. I don't quite have the aphid population in the desired range but believe me when I say I'm working at this non-stop. The grasshopper population is veering nicely toward prescribed levels and I believe I will soon meet most if not all your criteria. Sincerely, Ingrid (published author of many, many articles in many journals other than Trailer Trash)...See MoreSouvenir de la Malmaison or Mme Pierre Oger in Zone 10?
Comments (9)The Huntington, and Descanso, are different from each other and in general different from Nadia's location. Descanso in particular is an interesting case. Because it is in the foothills, at the lower end of the Angeles Crest, it is the recipient of some winter chill that most of SoCal does not get. (Cold air flows downhill, like water.) So, at Descanso, you can see a display of Gallicas and the like that most of Southern CA cannot offer. But they do funny things, too. I've photographed Rosa Mundi, blooming there in January. The Huntington is at the top of the San Gabriel Valley. Aside from the air pollution, the air is drier there, and a LOT hotter than areas nearer the coast. I grew up there, and I don't remember ever seeing either powdery mildew or rust. Jeri...See MoreAimée Vibert, Le Pactole, Mme. Creux
Comments (3)I have Le Pactole. I bought a tiny plant at a Sacramento Cemetery event a few years ago because I loved the plant growing there. The individual flowers are not that exciting but I love the big healthy bush. Mine grew swiftly from a three inch tall rooted cutting to 6 feet tall and wide....See Moresize of Climbing Mme Caroline Testout in zone 6?
Comments (3)I grow this rose in zone 5, and mine isn't cane hardy most years so it restricts the height. I'd say mine grows about 5-6 feet in a year and is a lanky main cane with laterals like most climbers. It'll get about halfway up an arch on an average year. This was a mild winter, probably more like yours, so it started with about 5' of cane on it, and will crest over the top of the arch by the end of the year. Still, it's the kind of climber in our zones that would only fill half of an arch, so put something else on the other side. It's a very stiff-caned climber so it only grows horizontally when the canes are pretty young, so the more traditional trellises aren't ideal for it, but they'd work if necessary.
