Rooting hormone

There's an interesting tip on rooting hormone in the latest African Violet Magazine.

'Indole acetic acid (IAA)... stimulates the growth of the apical shoot and retards lateral shoot (sideshoot) growth.' Thre's more, but basically, it's good for suckers and crowns, bad for leaves (well, it'll help the leaves root, but prevent babies!).

Hi Korina,

Funny thing. I thought I had already commented on this already. It must have been a senior moment. lol I never use rooting hormones for African violets. I have tried it in the past and have never seen any benefit from using it. This study just reinforces what I've already suspected. That is, one doesn't need rooting hormones to start African violets.

Rooting hormone is butyric acid ( labeled a bioactive chemical ) and as a cutting stimulate is ideal. But this acid can damage mature roots or even plants nearby. It is actually considered a hazardous material and you are cautioned not to place it near water supplies. Might just me a "don't sue us if your child gets sick on it' warning but I wouldn't use it on a mature plant. Alfalfa meal is what many gardeners use to help the roots mature. Alfalfa has a hormone that stimulates growth.

have you spent any time reading dirr's propagation manual ? ...... it addresses all the variables requisite ... i suggest your local library before investing in any of the expensive ones .... most libraries can order books from any library in a given state .... for free ,,.... talk with your local reference librarian .... ken https://duckduckgo.com/?q=dirr%27s+manual&t=ffcm&ia=products ps: some products contain a fungicide .... which might be a plus ...

I use to use rooting hormone on the secion of the leaves I would put down.. not the stalk of the leaf, but the cut sections of the leaf. Now, I quit using it and it works just as good.. in fact, the sections root faster without it. I tried an experiment putting down sections of the same leaf with and without. Babies appreared within 4 - 6 weeks without the hormone and about 8 - 10 weeks with it.

The only time I use it.. is when I cut the crown off.. then I only use a very light dusting.. tap the neck on the side of the counter to knock off as much as I can.. put the neck in soil, water, put in an enclosed container and leave it alone for about a month.. only checking it to make sure it is not dry.
