after the transplant

Gee, I think I'm actually getting good at it.

I read here all the time. The more I learn, the more I realize I don't know but I am learning. I had to transplant 5 roses into larger pots. I know that 3 of them never knew they were moved. They didn't skip a beat.

2 of them I'm not so sure. I was able to keep the rootball intact but as I was lifting out I felt the smallest of tearing..Feeder roots?? I was cringing! That was 4 days ago. I go out a thousand times a day to glare at them and so far there is no wilting or yellowing. Can I breath now?? Thanks for any help. Donna

I think you can relax a little. After four days, if there was any loss of feeder roots and the plants availability to take up moisture, it would be seen by now. Keep them watered and find something else to worry about.

don't worry, really, I often broke the roots very badly in the past, but nothing happenend in the long run (in the short run they looked like dead, ok, but roses are good at faking death whilst still alive!).
Seems you did things very well. Just water them a little bit more than the not-transplanted roses, and give them some shadow if you have hot sun in these days (maybe in z5 that's not the case).

Definitely flea beetles. Flea beetles looooooooooooooooove eggplant. Row cover does work to protect the eggplants until they've gotten big enough to survive the flea beetle attack. Growing eggplants in containers helps too. Growing eggplants in containers AND covering them with row cover works even better :-). Maybe the eggs are ladybug eggs? (If somebody could explain WHY row cover works, considering that flea beetles don't fly, I'd be grateful. I'd also be grateful if somebody could explain where the flea beetles all of a sudden come from. It's enough to make me reconsider the theory of spontaneous generation :-).)

snow after shrub transplant?

Shouldn't hurt a thing. This is the best time of year to transplant shrubs--before they leaf out and when they can still take advantage of spring rains. It's also fine to divide and move perennials. Frost or snow won't hurt, though and unusual very late freeze can wreak havoc.

Santosh, This is an old post from 14 years ago. I bet if you posted this on the Tropical Fruit Forum you would get an answer. Do you live in a warm or a cold climate? Do you know what cold hardiness zone you are in? I don't grow Cherry of the Rio Grande but it might be dropping leaves because it is too cold. As long as the main plant doesn't die, it might grow the leaves back in the spring.

That's probably a compressed peat pellet. Very spongy to allow for root growth but very low on nutrients. I would think you can reuse it for sprouting. The only concern is the growth of fungi that can cause 'damping off' of seedlings. The longer you have it wet the more likely it is to attract spores that are floating around. But if you haven't mixed any other potting mix or soil into it, it may be just fine. You can also mix it into your potting soil - potting mixes often have peat as a component. Or toss it in the compost.
