Can someone give me more info on roses used to extract oil from

This spring a friend of mine gave me a jar of rose pedal jam. It was not only delicious, but also very pretty to look at, dark pink and rosy pedals swimming in fragrant and mauve syrup.

When I asked her what rose she used to make the jam, she said it was the type they used in Iran to make rose water and rose oil. Later she gave me a band from her plant.

upon researching on the net for the verity, I only learned they identify them by category Damask. I could not find a name for them.

I would appreciate any info on this rose and possibly its name.

Have you looked up Kazanlik? It is a damask cultivated in Iran among other places. It is not mauve though.

I tip even my largest pots to get the roses out. If it's not near the lawn where it's soft I put down a couple of layers of towels or something to protect the side of the pot and then tip it over. I've never had a problem and I have pots bigger than 27 inches. I will say though that I no longer use any kind of ceramic or terracotta pots for roses. If you want to use it in the future just use the ceramic one on the outside for decorative purposes and plant the rose in a plastic pot that will insert into the ceramic one. Put a piece of styrofoam or some pea gravel in the bottom of the ceramic pot for the plastic one to rest on so they don't stick together and the plastic one can drain better. Solves a lot of problems.

Double Delight - you will love it. The only negative is that it gets double centers if you overfertilize. Good repeat, about 4 feet here. Mine is an older plant, when younger, it was taller Just Joey - I love it but it is not reliably hardy here. I plant it again and again hoping to find the right sheltered spot! Love it but can't seem to keep it going. Fussy! Never grown one over 8 inches tall. Peace - a classic, good rose for me. About four feet for me. Repeat is ok, not as much as others in my garden. Medallion - I like it and it has been a good rose for me in my garden. Not my fave, though. 4 feet and a somewhat stingy bloomer here. Europeana - a nice rose, lots of bloom throughout the season. A shorter, low growing rose. Always in bloom. I haven't grown Pascali. Just not a big fan of white roses. I've bought the package roses at Menard's for years. To give them a good start, soak them for at least 24 hours. They will do better if you put them in pots to start, then transfer them to the garden when they have shown some good growth.

The powder that lost refers to is a dry release. I'm guessing you didn't get that. You can acid stain concrete. We had a friend who used to do this as his business. He had some left over stain, so we just acid stained our outdoor kitchen counter tops. It was a small area, so we used a sponge to apply the stain, and let it sit overnight. The next day we used a baking soda and water mixture and spread it over the counter tops, let it sit, and then washed it off. The baking soda mixture brings the ph back up to a normal level. The acid stains the concrete by a chemical reaction. The stains come in several different colors. Your concrete person should do a sample piece from your pour for you to look at for you to get a good idea of how it will look, but acid staining will give you more of a variation in color than if you had used stained concrete with a dry release over the top. You'll have lots of different shades of the color you choose, and it will be very random. You can only control it somewhat. I really like the look of our counter tops. I guess it just depends on the look you are going for. On the containers of stain, it said to let new concrete cure for 28 days, but we only waited 2 weeks. I'm not sure how much that matters. You have to have your concrete really clean before doing the stain. The concrete guy should take care of that. Hope this helps.

I'm not seeing the stone. It seems like there is so much texture going on already with the brick and the dimensional roof shingles that more texture is going to take it downhill and confuse the overall look. I actually like your current columns very much. I think the right paint choices will make the most of them. They are a lovely detail on your house. As for the windows, I had some similar "wrong" ones--plain casements on the second story of my 1929 Tudor. I couldn't replace them so I got corner brackets that fit inside the upper corners, sort of like gingerbread but more plain, and screwed them to the inside of the top of each window so it gives an arch to the overall shape of each one. That helped immensely. They are painted the same color as the windows on the outside so they don't look added-on. I also used heavy lace draperies on the top floor to "sell" the whole look. Sort of a chalet-style or Bavarian thing going on. My windows on the first floor are six over six mullioned windows, and surprisingly the two different styles of windows actually work now that I got the arch going on the top floor. You might want to do something like that. I noticed that the windows are of different sizes so too much of the arched business might look weird. I'd do it on the top floor only. And add on mullions on the lower level, so that the two floors aren't trying to mimic the same look. I think the white trim and the yellow is a big part of the problem, like has been mentioned. Can you also paint the white trim on the windows? Then painting those large surrounds around the windows also would help. I'm seeing a darker color to bridge the transition between the roof and brick elements and maybe a similar color on the windows themselves, or something like taupe surrounds and charcoal window frames. Or even a dark red on the windows and charcoal surrounds. Something like that. And then you can paint the big columns to fit with that scheme. Either garage door would look good to me, but I'd keep the brackets and paint the area above the door. I'm seeing Bungalow when I look at your house. With some Tudor. There's a great book by Jane Powell called "Bungalow Details: Exterior" that you would get lots of ideas from. There's another one out there with a similar name but it doesn't focus on the exteriors, so see if you can find the "Exteriors" one. It's a beautiful book full of great colors and details. There are similarities amongst Bungalow and Tudor elements that you can use between the two styles. I don't think you need major work, but rather very careful selection of paint colors and some window corner/brackets/mullions to change their shape. And the garage door will make a big difference too. I think it has so much potential without doing too much to the actual structure.

Thank you for the clue. After researching it a bit more, I guess there are at least two other roses that fit the bill and grow in Iran (Persia)
Ispahan and Gloire de Guilan .

I guess I have to wait till next spring to see which one it maybe.

I suspect it's some kind of Damacenna rose, and most if not all oil production in Bulgaria and Turkey uses different strands or varieties of this rose. Autumn damasks are used too, because I have read some harvest flowers twice a year.

For the rose jam or syrup it doesn't have to be one particular variety to get very simmilar aroma, and the color can easily be adjusted by the choice of petals. Choose the really red ones for the most clear color, at least mostly red petals. Use what ever petals you can find, as long as they are fragrant it will be a great jam.
Recipe:
Two litres of rosepetals, enough water to cover them, boil for one minute; sugar and pectin type jelling agent to thinken the liquid (as recommended on the bottle). Use very small jars, don't put the lid on until it has thickened (important, or it will not set). You can have the jell as solid or as runny texture as you want.

Rose elixir / syrup from the middle east is often made with glycose syrup, and not sugar/pectin, but some are, there's several types even there.

My post got a bit long, but my main point is; you don't have to wait until next year to make this, and there's no reason to wait for the genuine variety of rosepetals, even though that will be very interesting too :-)

Rose de Resht, Etoile de Holland, Crimson Glory, any of the red hybrid perpetuals would give fantastic results.

You can also buy bottle Damascena rosewater on line. A lot of middle eastern stores here sell it to be used in recipes it's not terribly expensive. Great in rice pudding with pistachios.
I think Amazon.com sells some.

Has anyone had any success extracting rose oil from the petals? I tried it this spring with less than good results.

I always keep several bottles of rose water in the house, it's very cheap. I use some diluted with water in a spray bottle when I iron clothes. It's a good face tonic, too, when you feel hot. The same with orange blossom water.

I remember trying this at science club at school (enfleurage, i think it was called) - we collected mountains of rose petals and jasmine flowers to soak in oil - we used almond oil, i think. Overall, our results were less than impressive as you need many, many fresh petals(collected early in the morning before the sun gets on them) and a wide bath with as much surface area as possible. I think you are supposed to add the petals in layers too. Good luck with this venture - I could be persuaded to try rose petal syrup but any perfumery is gonna come from a pharmacy or department store for me.
