Yesterday Wayne went to the grocery store,while waiting in line,,the lady behind him,had about 50 packs of seeds,he said to her,"Ah, some one is going to be busy"she laughed and told him her garden lot is bigger than her house,they can every thing,and seeds are not cheep.

He asked her if she ever heard of the Garden Web, seed trading,"Oh my, no" she says,so he proceeds to tell her all about how you can trade seeds,and get some really cool ones,some will even help you out if you are new,that he wanted some tomato seeds last year,and so many sent in tomato seeds for him.

She was very excited to hear this, then Wayne asked her if she WSed any of her seeds, says she,"What is WS?So he tells her all about WSing,she was very impressed,and said she was going to go home and look us up.

Way to go Wayne,pretty cool,eh.

Shore, Ha! I guess gardening can get you into more than one 'sticky' situation? And thanks for the Bday wishes! If anyone is really planning on growing all of these, well, lets just say there better be some pictures forthcoming this summer. :)

Alberta, I'm a list person too...so it's really a big deal for me to let go on this one. But that's how crazy it's been. Now, to top it all off, the vet thinks one of my cats has Diabetes...if I'm going to be giving my #1 Alpha Male cat, Gibson, insulin shots twice a day AND making sure the other cats don't eat his special food, I'll be lucky if I can get any plants into the ground! Vera, I kind of asked myself, "How many times have you gone back to your own data sheets for info?" The answer...twice. It was for other people who wanted specifics and I just happened to have them. The month or a yes probably would have been just as good. And then, does it really matter when it sprouts as long as its before June??? (These are the questions I've been asking myself). Lynda, I had the best of intentions...I'm just realizing it isn't all that important for me anymore. --I do like having a list of what I've sown, though. I feel torn. Doris, Me too! I have two research papers and two other projects along with lots of reading to do for the rest of the semester's daily classes. I have 2 1/2 to 4 weeks to get it all done, depending on which project we're speaking of. Not enough hours in the day!) But I did notice that the Menocopsis Bentifolia sprouted (I might have to record THAT one, because it's new to me) Oh well...I'll bite the bullet. If you don't see me on here, you'll know why... I'm no tulip expert, but I'll toss in my 2 cents worth. Tulip bulbs need to be chilled in order to grow correctly. I didn't know that many years ago when I lived in Dallas. There wasn't enough natural cold weather that winter and I didn't put the bulbs in the fridge. What I got were blooms sitting right on top of leaves, with no stem. It was definitely a conversation piece in my neighborhood. With that said I would vote against your option of "potting them indoors, giving them some time inside to root". I can't address the moisture/rot problem in your environment, but if your ground is already frozen, my inexperienced vote would be to pot them up in big pots and put outside. I would again emphasize that I'm not an expert, and encourage you to lean heavily on responses other than mine. :)

I mix up a tall plastic bucket of potting mix in the kitchen--garage is way too cold and the bale of mix was frozen solid by the time the solstice rolled around. I mixed 8 quarts of potting mix with one quart of MG since I bought the MG and had to use it up somehow. I use a soldering iron to poke holes--using a knife took too long and I wanted plenty of nice big drainage holes. I hate the smell but it does the job. Like others, I cut around the jug with scissors, leaving an inch or so for the hinge. Fill bottom portion with potting mix and moisten with half an empty sour cream container of water. After the first 25 or so jugs I found that moistened the soil just enough so a little drained out the bottom. Sow seeds thinly if possible. I know I sowed too many, being a newbie. I covered with just a little more of the dry potting mix for larger seeds. For the really tiny seeds I sprinkled some grit over the top of the mix. Bought the grit at the feed/seed store. A little goes a long way. I write labels with paint pen before sowing seeds or while the mix is absorbing water. Label goes in the jug on an angle so I can see it inside through the top. Tape the top and bottom together with 6" piece of duct tape opposite the handle. I fold over one corner of the duct tape for easier removal later. I didn't write the names on the bottoms of the jugs and hope I don't regret that later. Like Dee I work up about 6-8 jugs at a time. Once they're done I set them in aluminum cookie sheets until the sheet is full, then I carry them outside and set them in the container ghetto on my breezeway. The breezeway runs west to east so they're in shade but open to the snow/rain etc. My original goal was to WS 12 containers. I WSd my 200th container yesterday. Thanks to the nice people on this forum, I ended up with enough seeds to sow a lot more. My neighbor gleefully brings me a truck load of milk jugs from the recycling bin at the dump every week. The cats don't seem interested in the process and haven't even tried to climb inside the bale of potting mix. I do spill a little on the floor but so far it hasn't been too messy of a project. It's great having something of a gardening nature to do during the cold months. I use my computer to keep a log of how many jugs per day and what seeds. I also keep a list of the seeds I sowed and how many containers of each. I like the milk jugs better than the 2 liter bottles because they aren't apt to blow over when the wind howls through the breezeway. A few of the 2 liter bottles got blown over so now I've got them all surrounded with WS milk jugs. It's gonna be a busy Spring!!

I thought my hubby was finally getting into the WSing until last nite after supper.....I commented to him that he really needed to cut back on his eating, his buttons were gapping open on his shirts, his knees would feel better if he dropped a few pounds, and (my words I wish I'd never said) he needs to realize that enough is enough.

Without blinking, he replied "and let's talk about your milk jug collection in the garage, when is enough going to be enough"...(oh, and he's not wearing a big smile on his face at this moment-ouch).

My smart comeback was: "Gee, I don't know, I never thought about it."

What in heavens name possessed him to stoop that low???? Maybe I need to make him some cake or cookies to go with his supper tonite????

nbacres - those tomatoes, beans, peas, celery, lettuce and everything you will be growing to eat in all those jugs are only there to help your hubby feel healthier and happier :) Plus your winter sowing free jugs will save a fortune on a new wardrobe. Hubby won't need one once he has all that fresh food to eat - see, you are only HELPING :)

Wayne is a very smart man. My hubby has lived with the gardening obsession for many years. He is very proud to that is my obsession, just like I'm proud of his music and ability to tinker with cars (that never seem to get fixed :)
He frequently tells folks that gardening can be *almost* free.

That's fabulous. I think it took Steve at least four or five years before I actually HEARD him tell someone about WS, of course he said he talked about it with other people, but being a witness is very confirming, lol.

WOw that is great! He sounds like a keeper. He must see how excited you get about ws'ing!

Yesterday my hubby left out an empty container. I picked it up and said yeah a new container. He then said he was saving it for me. He is helping! I was so happy, he has no idea how thoughtful that was! Better than giving me chocolates or anything else :)

My neighbor's husband asked if I had anything to TAKE to the dump yesterday so I said I had a couple bags of trash/garbage. Then I asked if I could go with him to the dump. He asked why. I said I wanted to snag some milk/spring water jugs out of the recycle bin. He laughed but said I could go with him.

When we got there, he parked the car right beside the recycle bin and proceeded to carry all the trash to the drop-off while I stood gathering the cleanest jugs I could find in the bin. When he'd finished, he walked over and began to pick out jugs from the other side and scrutinize the pile for "good" jugs.

He hates yardwork and thinks gardening is a waste of time...but he picked jugs out of the recycle bin for me. I suppose it doesn't hurt that I'm growing some of these perennials for his daughter but it was still nice of him to help/enable the addict.

Hey, he could have asked her to follow him home so you could show and tell her what WS is all about. Hey, with all those seeds she bought, I bet there was something you might have wanted to trade her for. LOL!

I'm hoping that all I have planted will be successful so I'll convince my husband WS works and I'll get him interested in same hobby.
