Need a small city tree

I recently moved to a city house and have a small lot. I'm working on the landscaping and have a really great empty area about 7' by 7' that I think would be perfect for a small tree. I want it to be sort of a focal point so I want something interesting (not evergreen/shrubs). Prefer it to stay less than 8' in height with minimal spread, or something that I can prune to stay about that size. I live in Pennsylvania in zone 6. I would like a fruit tree but don't know if that's plausible. I'd also like small roots to not disturb my neighbors property or my patio area (approx 6' from where I'm planting). My sister in law has a really cute Japanese maple of about this size but I'd like something different I think. My backyard theme is aiming at Oriental or maybe Mediterranean so I'm not shying away from anything dramatic. In fact, the more "different", the better. I like the fruit aspect because it's functional and pretty, but really am open to ideas. Thanks! BTW
