PLEASE Help - goldfish pond with light oil film
Comments (2)If you add water to your pond and cause it to overflow the oil film will run-off too. If you need to add a lot of water remember to add some de-chlor to the pond first. Paper towels at the site of the spill-way will help catch the oil so it isn't so much on the stones and plants you have around the pond. The oil source may be from decomposing material in your pond, your pump(YIKES!) or using something like a chainsaw too close to the pond. On rare occasion it is due to a toxic neighbour. Find the source if you can. C3D...See Moresick lethargic goldfish
Comments (16)First off, please start a new thread for your new problem. You might get lost down here. Anyway, fish in a new home need some time to get used to it. Hiding for a few days is normal. Soon they will come a running for food again! Next, if you didn't wash the dirt out of the gravel yeah it can make the water dirty. Fish don't seem to mind this (yeah, but we do). It should clear itself either by getting trapped in the filter or just settling out. Most things you add to clear it are bad for the fish. Finally, but most importantly, in revamping your pond you may well have killed off the bacteria living there that is processing the ammonia fish waste (very bad stuff) into nitrite (also bad stuff) into nitrate (not so bad in low levels) that plants use as food. This bacteria grows naturally but slowly. Keep an eye on your ammonia levels and be prepared to do water changes to keep it down until your bacterial is back....See Moreadvice on a sick goldfish please
Comments (5)Maria, since I have never had a fish with this problem, I'm going to have to defer to the others who responded. They are indicating that the fish will likely not survive. If the fish is still alive, you can try giving it a chance by bringing it in like I mentioned to have a closer look at it and see if it is interested in eating. Warm the water and see what happens for a few days. As long as it has sufficient oxygen in the bucket, it can last for a few days, although you will almost certainly have to do some partial water changes to control ammonia. If it doesn't respond to the warm water and food and shows no improvement, then you might have to take the more humane route. Oil of Cloves can usually be found at the grocery store pharmacy. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Sometimes these things just happen. I currently have a koi with a tumor that I'm keeping an eye on. So far, she isn't showing any signs of distress, is eating normally, swimming with no problem, and has no balance problems. But when she starts failing, I know I'll have to do the right thing. Not something I'm looking forward to, but it's part of the territory....See MoreAre my Goldfish getting sick?
Comments (6)LOL...the coral does look real, doesn't it? Actually...it's the backdrop/paper...⺠Although.....the damage could have come from the one artificial plant I have in there...(they're so ugly and have rough edges!) The smaller one actually chases and nudges the bigger one around the tank. I have well water with a water softener that uses salt as the filter medium...wouldn't that be enough salt or need I add it. About them out-growing their tank...Gussie, who's about 7" long makes me believe you're right. He's/She's grown so big so fast! Fussy's still small...about 5 inches in length. Thanks for the advice...will do a water change twice a week from now on, I reckon....See Morepandamania
