Anyone ever leave tree info behind when selling their home?

Another post got me thinking about this again. I was planning on leaving something simple like the arborday info page behind for whatever trees are in my yard when I move. Sometimes a little information can create curiosity.

Perhaps also what year any new trees were planted.

Anyine ever do this? Know how it went?

I wish that someone had! That is a great idea! I have a fig, an apple, Red on one side, yellow on the other, and a pear tree that are at least 40+ years old and I don't know the variety's.

The original homeowner sold it to my Dad in 79, the house was built in the 50's, and these trees are still producing well. Especially the fig, it is enormous! It has set roots on the lower limbs and basically turned in to a fig grove. I plan on offering cuttings when the fig goes dormant, but without a history I can't tell people what kind it is!

i offered such at closing.. the new owner cared not the least ...

you can do a lot better than arborday info ... and with the web and all .... a list of latin names should be good enough ...

Raybo, Celery should be mounded up with loose dirt at least 6 inches on the stalks to blanch the stems. Celery is mildly poisonous and blanching helps reduce the level of toxins. The leaves make excellent flavoring for soups and stews. Celery is a cool season crop best grown either in late fall or early spring. It can handle short periods of sub freezing temps down to 22 degrees, but this seriously slows down growth. Do NOT grow celery in the heat of the summer, it will not be happy. Knowing your climate, you could probably grow it successfully from either December or January seed start. It is best started in cell trays with 2 or 3 seed per cell. The above tip about taking 12 weeks from seed to transplant is pretty close. I've managed to transplant at 8 weeks but the plants are small. My suggestion would be to fill an earthtainer 1/2 full of a very rich soil mix and set the plants to grow. When the plants are nearly full size, fill the earthtainer up with peat moss to induce blanching. DarJones

Anyone ever had a bad experience with a bamboo nursery?

One of them, the decora which had the little shrubby growth at the bottom recovered and made new small shoots in the late summer, and this spring they made shoots nearly as big as the originals making a full recovery. the other one, makinoi which had only 2 large culms with very little foliage eventually lost their leaves and didn't make it so it was a goner. It seems like severely root bound plants can make a full recovery as long as they still have viable buds and the rhizomes haven't dried out completely, but there is a point where the shoot buds are no longer viable and the plant is pretty much dead as they become a living stick. Many commercial nurseries take over-sized divisions sticking them in pots with minimal soil which leads to root-bound plants very quick, and as these divisions dehydrate very easily, the lose viability very fast. Many times, nurseries are only worried about the bottom dollar so they don't care if the plants die because they already made their money and apparently aren't interested in repeat customers. If you are planning on getting bamboo plants, I would suggest first trying to find a local grove of bamboo you can dig from, and then perhaps looking on bamboowebforums to find a forum member you can make a road trip to to collect many bamboos at once. It is definitely worth the time. If you can't find anyone then I would suggest bamboogarden in Oregon because I know it is a legitimate bamboo nursery.

Well, it seems there is something larger and more ominous at work here. The trees in our yard, almost all of the oaks, are dead or dying. There must be something like 8 or 9 totally dead and that many more now in various stages of disease. They all seem infested with galls once they finally keel over, but I have read that galls don't kill a tree and assume then that this is a consequence of the disease and not a cause. We procrastinated about having the service come in and take the hazard trees out and now I am glad we did because it's going to be an ongoing thing. I guess the only recourse is to call someone from the agricultural extension office about coming out to check for blight or oak wilt or something, and from what I have read about these diseases there is really not much that can be done. Like I have mentioned before, our yard is not like a tree here and a tree there interspersed with grass---it's nothing BUT trees. 20 acres of them to be exact. But that's getting ready to change because regardless of the cause, when these dying ones are down the canopy is sure going to be different. I've become a shade-loving creature and that will certainly be a big change. I wonder what is happening here. And if it's oak wilt,any diseased tree can pass the pathogen on to the next through the roots, so we could possibly be looking at a huge loss of trees here.

I think I like ya Dee...come move by us LOL I both sold a home from a fishing trip :) and bought one the same way. The home we sold was a townhouse with lake front access. An agent had a client interested in our other townhouse (actually on the lake) and he sent us a personal letter (not on stationary which I'd have tossed before reading). It was hand written and very nice so I called back with a polite "no" but told him that I had another which was going to to on the market in a few months though again, not on the lake. They asked to see it and I sold it that day, never listing it formally. We settled on a very low fee (since I hadn't engaged him) which was a benefit to the client and to us. It was a nice easy sale which took place in a down market, no money lost on the deal at all (small profit and we had use of the place while remodeling our other house which saved us thousands). Our victorian (we purchased in Nov 09) was never on the market. We looked at most of the big places in town and had negotiated for another one here for over a year. The owner was and is a stuborn old puke who will not receive what she expected her home to sell for. But I will say, we were willing to pay it in the end because we wanted the home and it was the best available. DH said "can you just call the James house?" (we'd had our realtor contact them a year before and she was politely rebuffed). To humor him I did and we bought the home 3 days later over coffee in a little local shop where i used to buy penny candy as a child. :) No agents involved. I appologized to our agent, but as a professional she said "it happens" and she wouldn't take a dime (as a professional would always do). And she's right, it does happen, and it's part of her job. We've refered two clients who have purchased since. Both houses never made a formal listing status. Both sales benefited each party involved and both were friendly sales. I think from now on I'm just going to ask people who have never listed their house if they want to sell verses looking at listed properties LOL So don't limit yourself to listed or formerlly listed....consider anything you like. We've only been here since Nov and I get offers about twice a month. They're not offensive :) We see them as a compliment and always respond politely. The only time I haven't been polite was once at our lake townhouse when a gentleman (I use the term lightly) wearing his shirt open to his waist with gold chains (I kid you not) came in his big pickup and stopped out front to tell me he was damned determined to buy our house for any amount of money. "Everyone has a price". I said our price was one million. He said it would never sell for that...to which I replied, "good cuz it isn't for sale anyhoo" and went in. So leave the gold chains at home when making inquiries? :oP

I was planning to do so here soon. I most worry about people having the "dead pine trees" (Larix, Pseudolarix) removed.

Of course I did. I wrote it starting in such and such as corner labeled NW i.e. and went clockwise/counterclockwise plant by plant.

I nearly left a manual - I especially focused on how rare certain trees were (i.e. Acer carpinifolium and Populus wilsonii). I don't think it helped much.

I did (while it was not as extensive as whaas) Did not a big thing of it, included with the manuals for appliances. If the next owner could GAF, it was there for a subsequent owner who may care.

I just realized how rare this tree (Acer carpinifolium) was this spring...holy cripes a three gallon tree was over $100!

Hopefully yours is still thriving!

Thanks for the ideas. The previous owners left some manuals behind. Amazing considering the age of some of the appliances. Whaas, that is quite the list!

In a few years when this comes up I might leave behind a picture or two as well. House from the street type. One of the neighbors who has been here a bit has pictures from the eighties, neat stuff.

We're selling a house & I hope to. I'm personally invested in those plantings I did, and it would help the future owner to know what to replace one of the groupings with if, say, a yellow ribbon arborvitae died. And if he liked the boulevard false cypress, he'd know what to shop for more of. Knowing the Baby Blue Eyes Colorado Spruce won't get 50 feet tall anytime soon might be nice. These sorts of things are useful. The little Ginkgo in the backyard is an Autumn Gold, so no stinky fruit worries for the future. Knowing that one Japanese Maple is a Bloodgood but the other an Emperor I? The cute pair of 2 Golden Hinoki False Cypress trees (Chamaecyparis obtusa Verdoni in the front flower bed?

I also thinking pointing out this forum as a place to start would be good.
