That IS possible. It is planted in mini fir bark, so the water goes straight thru. But, (BIG BUTT) I've been watering the hell out of it this summer because most of the hostas (all in containers)seem to like that, and "Someone" here keeps extolling the virtues of constant water, water, water. I did have a problem with gnats and had to begin waiting until the top 1/2 inch dried out. Hope I haven't damaged my baby with too much moisture. Jim, have you seen this happen on any other hostas? I have new ones related to BME this year...Holy and Frosted Mouse Ears, as well as Cat & Mouse. They've been getting the same watering (all mine are in containers) but no leaf curling is evident in any of those. -Babka

BME has been planted in a raised bed of loose stacked stone since 2014. Yes, there are voles in my yard and possibly in that bed. I've been battling them all Summer in a ground level hosta bed across the way. Humm, leave it be, I like the sound of that! I feel like I should add a little soil or leaf mulch on some of the exposed roots. BME may be doing a 'fairy' ring thing. Is that a reason to dig it up in the Spring? I think I read some folks here dig out the center, add soil and theirs have filled in... or am I confusing it with ornamental grass...?

The squirrels leave the lantana plant alone? Well that's a good thing! I will look for it in my garden centre next spring. I may have to venture out further to go to a large nursery as two nearby garden nurseries closed in 2019. Now we are left with only one. Fortunately, that one is very close to my home. I have to wonder whether the two nurseries that closed down were happy that they closed down prior to covid. It was a crazy year for gardening and they may have lost out on a good opportunity. I know what you mean when you say "I get excited for even one bloom." I think that's what gardeners do---just happy to see one more of anything in our gardens! That's some hole they dug in your garden. It helps a lot if the workers are kind and tidy. I can't see a tent in the neighbor's garden, but the lattice doesn't look professionally done from what I can make out in the picture. I don't know how one comes to a place of peace when dealing with a neighbor---whether it's the individual or their property. A close friend of mine has dealt with a very difficult immediate neighbor for years. It has caused her a lot of anxiety and unhappiness. Not a good situation to be in. She loves her home and property too. I am happy that you appreciate your property and that we get to "share" it with you through your pictures! Had we bought my father-in-law's property after he passed away, I could have had tons of hosta and lots of nature around me. But timing wasn't right and I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

Great comeback on the mini! Regarding the ammonia/water slug spray, it will only work on the slugs that it comes in contact with. So no need to spray the leaves if you don't see any slugs on them. The spray is used to drench the petioles at ground level. This would kill the slugs resting there and their eggs. Yesterday we had rain in the afternoon. I went out when it was dark to check on an area I was finding a lot of leaf holes in. There they were: the slugs! So I sprayed the hosta leaves where I could see them. I drenched some of the hosta crowns and plan to check again after a rain. I generally don't spray the leaves because sometimes it leaves marks on them. But since we are nearing the end of the season, I figured it wouldn't matter anyways.
