Vintage is still accepting orders!

I just looked at their website, and they still have a lot of roses and are still accepting orders.

"We had hoped that all of our roses would be sold by June 30th but many remain, including rare de-virused old Hybrid Teas and Floribundas, historic rambling roses, 20th century climbers and more. We WILL accept orders until we have sold out. With our French import roses shipping this Fall we will bridge the summer and cease selling roses in the late Fall. Our website will remain in operation through this period, and you may place orders online for the rarities that are still available."

I was in California when my order arrived. My husband unpacked them (sort of), doused them with water, then bunged them in the dark laundry room. I arrived a week later and took a couple three more days to pot them up. All are nicely bouncing back--all have thrown out lots of leaves, and I even got a few blooms, too. I can't keep them in pots too many weeks here, because they will need time to root in the ground before our inevitable winter sets in. I got quite teary. I just discovered old roses three years ago. Now our huge asset out West is closed. Sometimes in the intervening days, I torture myself by getting out Gregg's sumptuous catalog, and mewling over all I will never have. Erica

I received my first bands from Vintage a few weeks ago. I was pleased with my order. The size never bothered me because I have propagated myself and know these were healthy plants. I expect to have to prune & shape them as they grow, however, had I received any that had wounded rooting stock or were blackening, I would probably have asked for replacements. I have a question, though, based on some of the replies here. Why do you recommend potting in 1 gal or 3 gal pots instead of just putting them into the ground? Mine are gradually getting planted in their final "home" in my garden. I soak those not in the ground yet in a bucket of water every few days. To me, pots just seem risk the opportunity of getting dried out and killing the plant. Also, most of mine have set buds. Do you let those continue to flower or cut them off? I was thinking of letting each flower just once so that I can verify the plant, then cut the rest of the buds off.

You're welcome! I've dealt with Our Lady and she can be beautiful, but if there is ANY chance of mildew, she clutches it to her bossom and proudly carries it as her "cross to bear". In the same gardens, PoO has been rudely healthy. There isn't a lot of fragrance, but with that bloom production, who cares? If you're going to cut her for a vase, there should be plenty of other things which smell good to fill in around her. I love that rose enough to use it extensively in breeding. The parentage is a very imaginative mix and has resulted in not only a fine rose, but some very interesting seedlings. I think I passed pieces of LynPoO on to Jeri to test. Thornless, heavy flowering, completely clean here. You can't really go wrong with Pride of Oakland in California. It was bred here and the seedling was selected here. It was nearly lost as it hadn't really been promoted for over thirty years. I'm glad it's making the rounds now and enjoying some renewed popularity. Great news! Final chances!

I just bookmarked this thread.

I've been waffling about whether to order any more roses again, ever.... considering the news about Rose Rosette Disease. But I've decided that all the spraying, around here, for West Nile Hoax, will at least delay the spread of the vectoring mites. So, while our air is probably deadly to Humans, it may be quite salubrious for roses.

I feel so bad about not having been a Vintage customer. But I've been a loyal customer to Roses of Yesterday and Today, since my teens, and of Antique Rose Emporium since their first catalogue. Somehow, my fruitless internet searches for Rosa Gigantea never brought up Vintage (who apparently had it, all along, plus various hybrids thereof). Why didn't their existence come to my attention?

Anyway, it's nice to know there are final chances to order. These people truly are HEROES OF THE ROSE WORLD.

Plan9, why do you call West Nile a 'hoax'? I work with a woman whose husband died from it - one of 6 people that year who did. She had the CDC show up at her home wearing hazmat suits.

What is the hoax? Serious question, please explain!
