plunk and run

I have just finished my first WS effort. It's only 5 containers but....it's a start! I sowed seeds (some from the New England Wildflower Society) that I plan on transplanting to my 1/3 acre meadow/field (coneflowers, coreopsis, lupines, campions, and asters). If I plunk and run I won't be able to find them to water. Should I plant them in a nursery bed until fall and then transplant them? or leave them in a nursery bed for a year and transplant them in spring 2009? or - plunk and run?

If it's a large area I would grow them on in a nursery bed and transplant the following year.

Oh,OK. I thought that might be what I have to do. I guess I could use part of my veggie garden as a nursery bed. If I get a lot of seedlings I might put a few out in the field to see how they fare. Thanks.

Just before your tulips die off make sure you mark the area where they are planted so you can find them. I can't tell you how many times I've thought I need to move that bulb or this one and then forgot after they bloomed where exactly they were. Also don't be surprised if you end up with stray bulbs planted here and there. Around here I get help planting bulbs from the squirrels. They seem to like to move things when I'm not watching! When you move your perennials, it will help them and you a great deal if you mulch them. It keeps the weeds down and the water where it belongs in the ground near the plants root system.

As someone who is the size of a garden gnome (alas, a chunky garden gnome), I've done myself in on a number of occasions thinking I could handle gardening projects. I'm getting like Nancy these days--trying to find innovative ways to do things using the hand-truck, wheelbarrow, and even hiring cheap help for major stuff. Token - I didn't find weeding enjoyable until I got their wire weeder and their narrow collinear hoe! They aren't lying. Wow - well balanced tools, light enough to handle easily but not so light as to be fly-away. Handle length and tool angle makes hoeing totally different than any hoeing I've done before. I love strolling though the garden, looking at the posies, nipping out the weeds before they have a chance to go crazy, and aerating the soil so that watering is more effective. It doesn't take much longer or much effort than just walking around and looking at the gardens. Once I got those tools weeding did actually get fun. Fast too. Johnny's is one of the very few sites where I will buy things (tools, seed varieties, whatever) based on their recommendation alone. And on the wire weeder & collinear hoe order I actually sent them an e-mail afterwards mentioning how much I liked knowing that I could trust their product recommendations. Go read the copy for Diva cucumber and Costata Romanesco squash on that website. Those are two we bought based on the blurb and they are now garden "must haves". I'm sure I sound like an infomercial, but if you've never done business with them be sure to get their catalog and check them out. Lynda

Wow, cool. I have similar plans myself. I'll be interested to know how it works out for you. Last year I put some in the ground early, and transplanted some to paper cups to get bigger. This year, I am planning to put some of my new plants in places where grasses are already established, so I haven't decided how big they'll need to be before I transplant them.

I plan to do something similar myself too. I am starting many containers of native grasses, clover, and wildflowers (seeds purchased from Prairie Moon nursery) to plant in the back 1/2 acre or so of my lot, which is a wild area with a mix of shrubbery, trees and a little meadow. It will much harder to water out there so these babies will probably get less pampering.

Do you think the seedlings would be more likely to survive if you plant them Hunk-o-seedlings? I'm planning to plant the grasses and clover and maybe some wildflower HOS.

I'll probably put some into a nursery area to grow for a year and transplant some out in the meadow this year to compare how they do under both circumstances.
