Oh Karen! I'm really sorry to hear that! What did you do? You need to take care of yourself now, rest up and heal sooner rather than later! The warm weather is coming! Well... once we get over the darn SNOW!!!!

Every year I seem to hurt my back carrying heavy bags or soil to the gardens - - I hope this year I am more careful, but sometimes I just forget... I have so much energy (too much) and work too much like a man and I am only 108 lbs.!

Carrie, you're bigger than me by a few pounds! We "Fun Size" folks need to learn to work with leverage! At least try to, anyway. Ya gotta get creative sometimes... I have been known to steal my son's skateboard to move stuff. I also swipe my husband's two wheel dolly/hand truck for some things. I wish I had room for a wheelbarrow, but we have no garage.

Just please, whatever size you are, folks... be safe!

I wish i could say I did it while carrying something heavy but it happened when I was squatting and I wobbled and boom some of those smaller bones on the side of the vertebrae came out of place. I think they are call Facet joints? Ouch, those little suckers hurt real bad! I had to lay down all weekend. I feel much better but I still hurt. Instead of a stabbing pain, I have a dull ache which is better.

I figured all of you would understand the frustration of not being able to check on the jugs. I used to peek at them every other day or so. Now I can just stare at them from afar. No bending ;)

Nancy - don't wish for a wheelbarrow - I once filled a wheelbarrow with lots of heavy things - rocks, soil, etc. etc. - Oh, it wheeled great, I got to my destination, didn't feel a thing WHILE WHEELING - but the next day, I felt the strain on my back. It's when you don't feel it while you are working that's bad because you keep working and then the next day... OMG the pain!

have you considered doing yoga for strengthening your back, helps a great deal.
I sure understand nothing could stop you from starting those hosta seeds. as a happy hostaholic myself perfectly understand.

As someone who is the size of a garden gnome (alas, a chunky garden gnome), I've done myself in on a number of occasions thinking I could handle gardening projects.

I'm getting like Nancy these days--trying to find innovative ways to do things using the hand-truck, wheelbarrow, and even hiring cheap help for major stuff. Being alone, I've found that paying a college student to help me for a few hours with the heavy work is worth it.

Karen so sorry to hear about your sore back!! I broke my arm this winter and have just gotten back to work. My mother (and any one else who walked by)helped me WS.

Maybe you can get the kids to put your jugs up on a table or something so you can look in on them.

Karen, Sorry, take it slow. My DH fell 4 years ago and fractured 5 vertebrae. Something to consider. Your back will feel better well before it is ready for resumed action, so don't rush back into things,it just prolongs the pain and recovery period.To completely heal and then rehab to full strength is a long process. thanks everyone! My Chiro has lots of exercises I can do once I am a little better. I do like Yoga I might have to look into a class in the future.

I am used to pain since I have Fibromyalgia and Crohn's disease but not this kind of pain. This is sharp and annoying.

I am getting better though!

Awe Karen! Crohn's is the pits!! I'm so sorry to hear about that! I have Collagenous Colitis, so I really do understand!

Thanks Nancy! Luckily the Crohn's is doing ok now. I hope your colitis is too. The Chiro was a bit worried cause I am the type to not complain about pain since I have had it before and learned to tolerate it.

Nope, Karen, like you, I learned to live with it. The only thing that the doctor can give me, comes with too many side effects, like bone loss, etc.

I agree with the yoga comments. It really helps build muscle strength and most importantly CORE STRENGTH. Most humans have poor core strength unless they work at it, but it really DOES make a huge difference in endurance and protecting our backs. Also...just a reminder...in nursing school we were always being told lift using the larger muscles of your legs (thighs) to lift rather than back muscles. Helpful hints? Hope so. Get better to all who have those nagging problems.
