I suspect the black tips are from fertilizer burn, but someone on here may have a different opinion.

You need to remove the grass around the tree, and put out 2 inches of mulch around it. This will give your tree its best start possible.

in my high drainage sand.. i would consider that over-watering ... for a tree ... and even for a recent transplant ...

remove the grass in a 3 foot ring ... and then properly mulch it ...

and then.. do not water again ... until the soil NEARLY dries ... insert finger. AND FIND OUT ...

who gave you this schedule??? watering is an art.. and your finger is the brush.. insert and FIND OUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN YOUR SOIL ...

as to the leaves.. that damage??? is so minimal.. it doesnt even bother me at this point..

in my MI severe heat and drought.. i would guess just about every tree on my 5 acres.. has similar damage ...

i would start to be concerned.. when and if every leaf was impacted ...

no two trees grow alike

try not to kill them with too much love.. they are trees.. and you will NOT speed sexual maturity ... nuts ... by 'feeding' it ... and most of us.. suggest a soil test.. to find out if your soil is lacking in anything .... and then fix that ...

and all of us.. consider tree spikes to be hokum ...

My wife had found something online that suggested twice a day watering for approx 30 mins. on new trees. Producing pecans was never a priority, they are just what I liked, in South MS. pecans orchards are quite common and I guess I just like how they look and wanted a couple.

I'll put the mulch down around the base. And do some finger testing. Although our soil stays pretty moist here.

kdc, if you spray an herbicide containing glyphosate as the active ingredient-Roundup or any one of roughly one hundred generic equivalents-around the tree, on the turf and not on the trunk at all, you can save the trouble of manually lifting the sod, plus not be taking the best, uppermost layer of soil away.

On a young tree, it is critical not to get the stuff on that young, possibly green and photosynthetic bark, but this is easy to do by using low pressure and aiming away from the trunk. Maybe you know all this already....just saying.

Otherwise, no, that is not a significant problem with the leaf edges. Byt this time of the summer, like Ken alluded to, it's completely normal for there to be lots of bug and other damage on tree leaves.

Fertilizer spikes.........quick, someone get the smelling salts! I wonder if they still make smelling salts?

For trees planted in large piles of gravel without soil, or for trees commonly found in swamps, this sounds about right. For other situations, it sounds completely wrong. For basic details on how you should water, see section 12 in the link below. It's kind of amazing to me that your trees haven't had more problems from the overwatering. Pecans are more tolerant of wet soil than many other types of trees, but what you describe sounds like a problem.

As Ken said, I wouldn't worry about the leaves at this point. But, I would remove the turf around the trees and mulch properly.
