What will happen if I don't separate the babies

Hello.

I have managed to get babies from some av leaves. What would happen if I just continue to let them grow together? Is it absolutely necessary that they be separated?

If it is necessary, can't I just wait until they're almost "normal" plant size?

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not very skilled with avs. I could grow diefs, pothos and sanseverias all day, but avs are somewhat of a mystery to me. :-)

they just do not look good if they grow together - and they do not reach their full potential. You can separate them when they are quite large so you won't be intimidated by them being too small and fragile.

If you can grow diefs - you can grow AVs.

Growing pothos, mother-in-law tongue and spider plant is definitely easier. ;-))

Amany, you will be surprised how AV babies can grow independently even if you pot them up from very early stage in their life. I have potted babies that have only three tiny leaves and they grew ok. So don't worry, just separate them and pot them up. They will thank you for that. Good luck.

In a couple hours since I've posted, both of the smaller plants are back to normal. Like nothing happened. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% Very interesting. This outright rules out any root problem. IMO any root problem is no/cannot be reversible. Wilting like what I see in the picture, can be due to TWO things: ___ extreme thirst' ___ extreme heat/sun In both above cases, plant will perk up after watering and after the source of heat/sun has gone. You say you water them every other day. But is it possible that you forgot watering for much longer than that ? OR maybe it is not just enough. It happens to me all the time. Just a week ago some of my tomato seedlings were wilting to the point of dying: THE CAUSE: thirst. After watering, they perked up but the lower leaves did not recover. Sure, soil less medium is better but I have grown all kinds of things in pots filled with garden soil. The problem with compaction and root bounding is that the pot cannot hold enough moisture for a long time (maybe not for one day), in the dog days of summer. Probably you have summer like weather in Florida right now ? THE BOTTOM LINE SOLUTION (imo) re pot them with soil less potting mix into a bigger pot. Hope all this is worth couple of pennies. "No Governmental agency is going to suggest nor advocate the use of chemicals to homeowners. You will more often than not receive "organic" solutions from county extension offices. Most of them believe that "grasscycling" or cutting at 4 inches twice a month solves all problems." That's a very broad statement. And I would think just plain wrong from what others have mentioned online. If there's any entity that knows about what fungicides work in a particular area I would think it would be the university researchers at the extension offices that run the field tests that are used in the marketing materials aimed at the pros. So they get to play with them first in a controlled manner rather than just reading the label and seeing what happens. Now, master gardeners are not the same people that run the field tests and do the research. I don't know what it takes to be a master gardener but it seems that like everything else in life, your mileage may vary. I haven't done a survey of extension offices but most things I ran across have indicated that they didn't know much about organic methods. When I mentioned I was applying corn meal and milk for the fungus the reply I received was that those were not EPA registered to treat those diseases.

You could try keeping a neatly mowed path through the grass and letting the rest grow long, or a keeping a sitting area close-clipped while the rest grows long. You could experiment until you find the path/pattern you like. Besides being practical, keeping manicured areas signals to anyone who sees the house that the long grass is intentional and meant to be admired, not a sign of neglect. A well-chosen sculpture, a birdbath, a sundial, or some such thing set out in the long grass can also increase the sense of purpose. Bill

but can't find it.... just wanted to let those who live in South Florida there is a rose show at the Mounts Botanical garden the 29th and 30th. It is free to enter and to go. There is also a plant sale the same weekend, There is cost for that... but people should enter there roses and.or go. It is nice to see others who enjoy our passion.

Thanks so much. Both of you.

I think I will leave them alone for now and separate them in mid February when the plants start perking up and looking forward to spring.

I am embarrassed to say that, out of about 10 - 14 leaves, the two were the only ones to survive with me.

I have 2 and on some three new plants growing up beside my AV's in the same pot. What can I do ?

separate them. One plant per pot is better for many reasons.

hello everyone,
I have been growing for about 18 months now and have some nice looking plants. I'm learning alot from this forum and appreciate all that have contributed to my brief success with AV's.
My question is, what causes plants to start growing tiny flowers and leaves. I've had plants do this after owning them for only two months. I've had them do this after having them for a year. At first I thought it could be from not repotting soon enough but I have plants that have yet to be transplanted and they are not experiencing this problem.
I treat all my plants the same way. I don't overfertilize and I use Peters 12-36-14 1/8 teaspoon per gallon. I use rainwater and tap water that has been sitting for a week and I use fish emulsion. I use the 1-1-1 ratio medium that most people use.
I've transplanted babies and within a month some will start growing tiny leaves from the crown while the other babies will grow normal.
From all that I have read I've never heard of anyone having this problem. I know someone out there knows what's up and can help.
